Anyone have any experience with their summer camp?

Hi. I’m new to this forum. We’re currently headed out to Oklahoma City University for the conclusion of their summer musical theater program. They’re doing Children of Eden tomorrow and Friday. My daughter was cast as Mama Noah. Anyone else have a teen there now?

Have a wonderful time at OCU. Our younger D is not there this summer, but had a fantastic time doing that program last summer (Urinetown/Pennywise). I went there for their final cabaret/performance and it was very well done. D went between her freshman/sophomore years, and keeps in touch with many friends she made there. They have a wonderful musical theater program, and she loved working with Dr. Herendeen. Our oldest D is an OCU music student (rising sophomore) and is very happy with their music program and the music opportunities she has had there (although she is not a musical theater student, but music ed/violin). Enjoy the show!

My son is heading to OCU next Friday for session 2.
Can anyone report on session 1 yet?
We saw a few pictures online but haven’t heard any details.

Wanted to make a plug for this great summer program. The 5th Avenue has been the home of many shows on their way to Broadway, Hairspray, Shrek, Light in the Piazza, Catch me if You Can to name a few.
This is not a residential camp, so your student would need to find their own housing, but it was terrific. The kids got to see the Broadway preview of Alladin. The performers came in to talk about working in the business, and they were taught a very energetic dance from the show. Many were Broadway veterans, so it gave the kids an idea of what they were striving for.
Each day had a rotating schedule of dance, song interpretation, acting, auditions, and fun guest lectures in things like hair and makeup. One of the acting instructors is on staff at USC! Three are two programs, one is non-audition, which is a prerequisite for the audition based program, which is three weeks in length. The camp culminated with a showcase just meant for kids in the cast. It appeared to help each kid with the skills they would need. The instructors were positive and helpful to each.
It was a great growth experience as well, as they got to go out during lunch in downtown Seattle and enjoy that great city. Kids came from all over the Northwest, which was a lot of fun.

first off i’d like to say that i attended the 2nd session of OCU’s high school MT program a few weeks ago and i absolutely LOVED it. it was so informative and fun, and i’ve met the greatest people. i cannot recommend it enough! if anyone has any questions about it, feel free to pm me.

that being said, i am now looking towards next summer’s programs..does anyone know which programs allow rising seniors to audition at the end of the program for the university? do any?

thanks!

The Music Theater Bavaria summer musical theatre program accepts graduating high school seniors, as well as college students. It’s an intensive month of training and performance in Germany, and they provide info about working in productions in Germany. My son attended when a freshman in college, and absolutely loved it! They are accepting applications now for July 2012!

which summer programs are
-at colleges
-taught by the musical theatre faculty there?
i know OCU’s program is, but i’m looking for others as i attended ocu’s summer program last year (and loved it!). does anyone know about umich’s program- if it’s taught by the faculty?

also, are there any summer programs that allow seniors to audition for the school at the end of the program?

My D attended OCU’s summer program the last two summers and loved it! The regular faculty teach all of the classes. You probably know the kids also spend their evenings in rehearsal for a production - this summer’s production is Les Miz.

Also, seniors who are accepted in the program can attend the summer program before their first fall as an OCU freshman.

If you have any specific questions, PM me and I will have my D help me answer. :0)

UArts has a great summer program taught by the regular faculty from its MT and Acting BFA programs.

^^^^^^So does Boco now. Details on their web site

My daughter is working on her videos for BAA right now and I have a few questions. 1. How professional do these videos have to be? 2. How difficult do you think it is to get into the summer intensives. My daughter is 14 and will be 15 in July before the session starts. THANKs for any advice…

Our daughter attended both the BAA workshop and their summer intensive programs the summer that she was 14 (July 2009). She loved it, and I don’t remember them being too picky about the video. You will want to have a current headshot and an updated resume, and they were pickier on the format for that (proper size/amount of info, glued back-to-back, etc.) It was a very good program, and she learned alot! She has done other great summer musical theater programs elsewhere, but if I remember right, I don’t remember it being difficult to get into the musical theater program at BAA. She especially enjoyed the master classes that were part of the package. For a sample, if you go to YouTube and type “Sutton Foster Someone to Watch Over Me” into the search box, you can pull up a clip that BAA posted of a song being worked on at one of the master classes where my daughter had the opportunity to work with Sutton Foster. BAA has posted other videos from their program on there if you want some additional samples to view, and to get an idea of the level of talent represented. Good luck!

The Performing Arts Project just put up their new website. It’s (remove spaces)performing arts project com. Last year my son went to Broadway Theatre Project and just loved it. Right after, the program imploded. All of the instructors left and started this program out of Wake Forest. The instructors really are the heart of the program. They are all amazing. BTP brought in Ben Vereen (he was amazing last summer) permanently and is hiring new staff. Check out the video on the PAP site to see the instructors. Sad to see them part but now there are 2 programs to choose from.

How is Central Michigan University compared to other colleges? Such as how competitive is it, how successful do their graduates tend to be? How prepared should I be?

^^You have posted on a discussion thread about summer programs in musical theater. You need to start a new discussion thread about Central Michigan University on the main Musical Theater Forum.

Hope I am posting in the right forum. My Son is interested in attending a pre college program for MT. However, he has no formal dance training. He will be starting ballet this January but some of these audition tapes are due right around that time. It would be very helpful if anyone could advise which programs would be ok with little or no dance training. After reading all the information in CC, it does seem that a summer program would be very beneficial. This does seem like the beginning of a very long and difficult process but my son really loves it. Thank you to anyone with any advice.

Both Broadway Theatre Project and Performing Arts Project require you to excel at ONE- singing, dancing or acting. BTP puts you in groups according to dance ability and the non-dancers are together and learn basics. In the performances, they just “move”.

I just saw information on CCM’s summer program. Can anyone offer insight into this program. I am still trying to come up with a summer list. So far, we were thinking CAP 21, MPulse, ArtsBridge, Broadway Theater Project and maybe the on at NYU. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks it seems that they did to get this all done by March. It does not seem to leave alot of time.
