Mpulse says they will be sending out emial notifications by March 1 on the website. I know
in the past years it looks like they send out all the “yes” via email and the “no”
via snail mail a couple of weeks later. It seems as though they have updated
a few things this year electronically and hopefully, all decisions are going
to be emailed tomorrow. But, this is all wishful thinking! It would be nice to know
right away so the everyone can make their summer plans!

I called yesterday and was told that all applicants will be notified by email tomorrow either way.

Thank you for posting this info.

I’m a Junior is high school and I’m looking at summer programs. I’m trying to decide between a few. I got suggestions from friends who did this kind of thing in the past and people who got into college for musical theater. I’m really looking for something to prepare me for college. I’ve done lots of shows before. Here is the list I have with the information I have on them:

Camp Broadway (campbroadway.com):
+small time commitment, seems reputable, broadway people
-expensive for a short time, short time to learn, mostly about putting together a performance

Future Stars Camp (http://www.fscamps.com/nassauCounty/drama.php):
+local, inexpensive, have friends going
-not much training, no important people teaching

NYCinLI ([NYCinLI](http://NYCinLI.com))
+local, long program, all Broadway people, people from before got professional jobs and agents, small class size, focused on training and auditions
-long commitment, new this year (they had a program somewhere else last year)

Stagedoor Manor (Stagedoormanor.com)
+Really famous, famous graduates, exclusive, great shows, sleep away, can do 6 weeks, roles for resume
-SUPER expensive, mostly about putting together shows, who teaches/directs?

So I made that list. Does anybody know anything about these programs? I have to decide soon.

You might want to check with Stagedoor Manor about whether or not they are already full for the summer. They usually fill really fast - like in October or November for the following summer. We applied for my D one summer in November and were put on a waiting list because they were already full. Not sure if it is different for guys. There is another camp, called French Woods, that is often compared to Stage Door, although they are TOTALLY different in reality. I think the comparison has to do with the quality of program available, not in the camper experience. They fill quickly as well, but I think not as quickly.

Look into Broadway Artists Alliance, you might like that one and it is really a great program. Two additional sleep away camps are Long Lake and Balibay, both excellent as well.

You need to decide what you want out of your summer program then figure out which fits your desires best.

My daughter spent 3 weeks at Interlochen between her junior and senior year in the MT Workshop and it changed her life - you might give it a look.

You might try CAP21 in NYC. My daughter did the program last year and absolutely loved it. Top notch instruction – no performance, completely focused on training.

Hi Softique, My D is going to CAP 21 this summer for 4 weeks, and I’m exploring housing. Can u suggest anything? Thx

Could anyone tell me about summer programs for graduating seniors who are planning on attending college for musical theatre

^^rcpurple: My D did BTP in Tampa after her sophomore year in HS. Apparently they are still accepting video auditions. It was a very intense 3 week program during the height of summer. Lot’s of talented kids aged 16-22ish. It’s worth checking out. This doesn’t apply to you, but this is how we discovered Texas State and put it on our list, and now we are so glad we did. (There were kids there from many programs there.) It’s a great way to connect with other kids already in, or on their way to MT performance programs. I will say that some of the faculty moved over to a new program the following year called The Performing Arts Project. I believe their auditions are closed for this summer, but it’s worth checking out. I feel comfortable recommending either one because of the cross over in faculty. Things may have changed from 2010, so look into it and see if it’s a fit for you.

Singerdad, did you go to the weekend shows? My son was there that summer, too!

theatremomma, We made a family vacation out of it and all came down for the shows and spent some time with Mickey Mouse too. Your son was a standout and very fun to watch, with an incredible unique voice. TX State is very lucky to be getting him. PS, our kids are FB friends.

I wish we had met. We also did the WDW, Harry Potter World thing.

Hey theatremomma, we almost did meet back then - my D informs me that we just missed seeing you guys at one of the WDW parks! I’m pretty sure we’ll run into you at some point in the future though, if I had to guess. Looking forward to it.

rcpurple: My D attended the Steinhardt Summer MT program after her junior year. She was only 17 at the time, so she had to be in the supervised group. She would have loved the extra freedom to explore the city even more if she were 18. She got great instruction vocally and worked with some really talented kids there. She made great connections, and it gave her a small taste of living in the city, which she absolutely loved. Video auditions open until April 1, I believe. Good luck.

Hi, I was just wondering how hard is it to get into Rutgers summer acting conservatory?
Thanks! :)

My daughter attended the Rutgers program for two consecutive summers and absolutely loved it. They have a small MT track (14, I think, at least when she was there) which had its own focus, but which also shared the common acting component. I have to say that it was demanding, but it was where she began to develop a genuine intellectual connection to the acting craft. The acting faculty were from the BFA program and were quite direct with the students, but were also supportive and understanding of their relative youth. The voice and dance instructors also had high expectations.

I can’t tell you how “selective” they are in terms of admissions, but I do know that she and many of the students in her cohort ended up with great BFA options, so I would say that those who applied were fairly serious about their work.

And I can’t say enough about the director of the program. He really knows what he is doing.

Thanks so much for the reply! Of all the programs Rutgers seemed to stand out the most in my mind! I will definitely be applying!! Fingers crossed!

Hi, amtc, for your post on Backstage’s top five precollege and top five college programs. Your ‘just fyi’ comment at post’s end is a good point. Unlike the top 20 worldwide film program listings by sister publication The Hollywood Reporter, which explains how the programs are vetted in depth, Backstage–which now seems to have collapsed into a contributed-editorial rag on the print side–does not provide any guidance on how these fives were chosen. Not saying the listed programs should be thus suspect, but the top five by Backstage on best musical theatre programs for NY performers includes Stella Adler and AADA–for whom MT is barely a sideline to their fine acting instruction–and there’s no mention of Circle in the Square, which like the listed Cap21 has a highly regarded MT conservatory and MT summer program. And NY Film Academy instead of Tisch and Steinhardt’s BFA and summer MT instruction? To quote Charlie: good grief. So any listing in today’s Backstage should be at best of light regard. I’ve done years of research into theater programs, and although the five precollege summer programs listed in Backstage are good (except perhaps for the USPA that rents space at UCLA [it is not a UCLA program] and is often cited by disappointed CC posters as not for the serious student) to very good the list comes nowhere near to representing anything akin to a ‘top five’.

kimwilliamson, thanks for post. I could not find the one by amtc that prompted it but I did read the article in BackStage that you mention. I am curious where you got the info that the summer UCLA program is ‘not’ a UCLA program. My D applied there for this summer and we did the research on CC and other places. I even called the UCLA theater department and spoke with the man in charge of the summer program, looked up the instructors for the summer program and did find that they ARE on the faculty at UCLA. Perhaps the disappointed posters you mention were from an earlier year? USPA is helping to sign kids up for the program, as they do everywhere they have a connection but their connection with the kids at the summer camp is restricted to the evening dormitory time, etc, things outside of the actual classes. That is what both USPA and UCLA both told me but I would like to hear more of what you found out. Thanks in advance.
