My D was accepted into Wagner College Summer Musical Theatre Intensive. Does anyone have any information that they could share about this program or know of
someone who has attended in the past?

This includes Tituss Burgess(The Little Mermaid), Billy Porter(Kinky Boots),Morgan James(Godspell), Shoshana Bean (Wicked),Quentin Earl Darrington (Ragtime), Deidre Goodwin(Chicago), Tyler Hanes(A Chorus Line) Matthew Scott(Jersey Boys) ,Kristen Scott(Follies),Jarrod Emick (Damn Yankees) and Alice Ripley (Next to Normal); Tony Award nominees Jodi Benson (Crazy for You), Stephanie J.
More than 3,000 students have participated in Broadway Dreams programs. Past students have gone on to perform with Broadway, national touring and regional productions including Bring It On: The Musical (Ryann Redmond, Calli Alden), Bare (Ariana Groover), Memphis (Lindsay Roberts), The Book of Mormon (Paris Nesbitt), Shrek (Chase Todd), Evita (Katie Huff), The Addams Family (Ethan Wexler), A Chorus Line (Sidney DuPont) and Spring Awakening (Blake Daniel). There is no better way to grow as a performer while making valuable industry connections than through The Broadway Dreams Foundation.

I got accepted into a one-week program in NYC called the Open Jar Institute. This will be my first summer program ever and Iām really looking forward to it. From what I already know about it, they offer 2 sessions for high school students, one in July and one in August, as well as one college session. Iām doing the August high school session this year because Iām also doing summer school in July :'(

Anyways, it seems like a very strong program. The first 4 days consist of vocal, acting and dance classes as well as workshops with industry professionals, whether they be performers, directors, agents, casting directors, etc. The big focus is auditioning skills because the entire workshop culminates in a mock audition on the last day for actual Broadway casting directors and agents.

Other info includes housing, which is in a hotel in Times Square, you can either share a room with 3 other program participants or rent a family room on case the whole gang feels like coming along
all meals are included as well as the price for tickets to see 4 Broaday shows!

Anyways, thatās everything I know about it for now, Iāll let you know how it is once Iāve actually done it!

This looks interesting. Anyone have any experience with it? http://www.triplearts.com

Since the āactual Big Listā in this post is several years backā¦anyone want to take a stab at updating with the most recent information/schools??

A really good place to start is one of my first threads I posted a question about summer programs in cities ā someone amazing ā a few actually posted a really good comprehensive list of schools offering summer programs.

My D went to Carnegie Mellon / CMU Pre-College for Drama and Musical Theatre. In hindsight, if I knew then what I know now, I wouldāve saved the money, skipped CMU (since the program didnāt offer the training she needed to prepare for the insane audition process) and would have put every cent into Broadway Dreams and private sessions with Moo.

My D is a junior and we are taking this summer to coach with MTCA and do a two-week dance intensive at the 5th Avenue Theater that is local for us. Many people we talked to said coaching for auditions was the most important thing to focus on before senior year.

I will second what is being said about getting coaching and focusing on college auditions the summer before your senior year. We always coach our kids that they should do the national camps the year between 10th and 11th grade and college audition prep between 11th and 12th. Remember to look and find coaches that have a track record. This is an expensive endeavor but the coaches help immeasurably.

A short national camp is not a bad idea. Broadway Dreams is only one week so it is a good choice for summer before senior year. That way you can do college audition prep but still network at a national camp.

What about programs that (from what Iāve read on CC) take the kids that are rising 12th and help them focus on audition prep? I thought I had read that TPAP and mPulse both have an intentionality on that type of training only with the kids who are entering their senior year.

TPAP does have some things set aside that will help the kids. Mostly it involves being able to workshop and have master classes with the heads of some of the college programs. Gary Kline, Kaitlin Hopkins, Jim Price, head of OU, Rider, to name a few, attend for two to four days and work with the 12th graders. It is a great thing!! However, they do NOT work on college packages and such. Dave Clemmons and MaryAnna Dennard both have workshops there and Dave does a great class for parents on College Audition process. The bottom line is if you are going to do a summer program, please make sure you have a great plan to work on your packages before and after you get backā¦AND know that this process is EXPENSIVE and if you are having to work in a budget donāt scrimp on coaching and private lessons to go to a summer intensive.

@carMT73 TPAP is great for making connections with the heads of prospective schools; however, their training does not focus on college auditon prep. It is simply all about collaborating in the creation of art. Sure, the kids take voice, dance and acting classes from industry professionals, but the classes teach these things in general terms. They are not geared towards finding the perfect audition mon-ologue, or 32 bar cut of the perfect song for your type. In fact, I have never heard of a camp that focuses exclusively on this except for Interlochen, and it does it only for about a one week.

The class for parents given by Dave Clemmons is FABULOUS. MaryAnna gave the seniors a copy of her book, I Got In, but the rest of the kids did not get to hear her speak.

I agree with @NAtalantaStudio - if you can only afford to do one thing, invest in the coach and time for your kids to get ready for the auditions. The camp is the cherry on top- nice, but you can do without it.

I know nothing about mPulse.

There are very few of the college programs like CMU and Michigan that are actually set up as āpreviewā grounds. There are the rare few that get noticed from the camps but it is a rarityā¦better to go somewhere that has the ability to meet many of the heads of programs. I agree with @addicted2MT that TPAP does not help with setting the audition package or with working on the package.

Thank you for those very helpful comments, @addicted2MT and @NAtlantaStudio! What a helpful clarification. I appreciate your insights! Thank you!!!

Personally I think you get more bang from your buck working with coaches that particular summer. Both MTCA and Mary Anna Dennard offer optional mock auditions and master classes with various MT pros and program heads during the summer as part of the services they offer to the students they coach. And working one on one with your coaches on your material insures you address whatever skills you personally need to work on, not what a group needs to work on.
There are some programs like ArtsBridge and I think Baldwin Wallace has a week in summer as well that are specifically designed to help prepare you for auditions. so you may want to investigate those. I would not say that is the purpose of mPulse , OCU, Northwestern or CMU. Those give you a good idea of what itās like to study MT in college, but the focus is not on preparing your specific audition material. TPAP and BTP work with a broad range of ages so not sure if they specifically target college auditions, but they may.
All that Iāve mentioned are great camps. But if college audition prep is what you want, I think working with a coach individually is the best way to prepare the summer before audition season.

food for thought ā I was looking at Artsbridge ā heard it was a good audition prep ā 2 weeks in August. It wasnāt good for us as we are rising Junior but I would be curious if it is effective.

Broadway Artists Alliance has a college audition prep week amongst their other offerings. CAP 21 also has an extra week you can tack on to their summer program and that extra week specifically focuses on college audition material. Though I must add that my D got a lot of new material from CAP 21ās regular 4 week camp.

If youāre on a limited budget though, I agree with previous posters that you should spend your money on private coaching instead - either Mary Anna Dennard or MTCA. They work specifically with you on the best audition material for you personally.

I would like to put in a plug for coaching also. My D is a junior and had her first coaching with her MTCA vocal coach yesterday. We are super lucky that he is appearing in a show here locally so we can meet with him in person for a month before he returns to NYC (all the way across the country). His job is to help pick the material and work on the acting of the songs. He asked a lot of insightful questions that helped him understand her as an artist and a person. He is a composer and actor so his piano skills are also top notch. She can tell already that its going to help her connect to her material and be more than just āsingingā by the time she has the three songs ready. These people know what they are doing! Highly recommend!!

My D is doing the one week audition class at BW with Vicky Bussert. We will let you know how it goes (for future juniors!). I like that it is a small group ā just 15, and taught by the BW faculty. Nice preview of their program and hopefully good audition prep, too.
