Summer Program Big List- Data/Info - keep adding

My daughter did ArtsBridge for 2 years. It forced her to really get on board with audition prep and learn what that crazy senior year was going to be like. But I would say that ANYTHING you can do and afford to help your child prepare for auditions is money well spent, ESPECIALLY the summer before senior year. Don’t go to a program on one campus thinking it will help your child get into that school. Don’t go to Master classes with certain faculty thinking that will help you get into their school. Any extra exposure to college faculty can show off your flaws as well as your strengths, so it is a wash. Just. Get. Ready. For. That. Audition. That shining 5 minutes where you have to be and look your absolute best. And remember that a pre-screen is now an audition.

American Conservatory Theater (ACT) San Francisco - 1, 2 and 4 week Young Conservatory intensives -Acting and Musical theater tracks - offers both middle and high school programs.

My son did CMU last summer, and part of the emphasis was researching and selecting potential audition material. The student uses the chosen material for their audition at the end of the six week session. My son ended up using one ballad and one up-tempo from his CMU stint for his auditions this year. He was a complete novice when he arrived at CMU when it came to college auditions and what a BFA was all about. I knew even less :slight_smile: The price still makes me wince, but luckily his grandmother had left him some money, and I felt it was an investment in his future.

My d is going to CSSSA this summer – the California State Summer School of the Arts. It is a highly competitive audition only program. Students who are accepted are named California Arts Scholars and can receive up to 40K in merit scholarships for college. The program is mainly for kids in California, but they do accept 20 out of state students. Because it is a state run program the cost is really low – $1500 for four weeks. It is a wonderful option for Californians! It is held on the campus of CalArts and taught by several CalArts professors. It encompasses Drama, MT, Art, Film-making, and Creative Writing. http://www.csssa.org.

My D went to CSSSA two years ago and loved it. Scholarships, at least in theatre, were limited to seniors.

Broadway Dreams Foundation has great summer programs with wonderful theatre professionals. This year’s intensive in Philly even includes an awesome college audition preview with panelists from MT schools. Wish this had been around when my boys were going through the process: <a href=“Motor Dünyası”>Motor Dünyası;

The Torggler Summer Vocal Institute at Christopher Newport University is currently in it’s 2nd year. It’s geared mostly towards vocal musicians, but they do offer instruction in musical theater. It’s a 2-week program and a very nice campus, with world-class, new, facilities. This year, some of the invited guests who taught master classes were Patti Lupone, Spider Saloff, Costanza Cuccaro and Nathan Gunn.

Here’s info from their webpage: In 2012, Christopher Newport University established the Torggler Summer Vocal Institute (TSVI), a prestigious residency program for emerging young singers who wish to train with world-renowned vocal pedagogues and performers. TSVI exposes students to critical theories while developing a wide variety of essential performance skills during a two-week intensive artistic experience. All voice lessons, coaching and master classes are taught by leading performers, teachers and scholars. Skill-classes and workshops — including private lessons, vocal health, sight-singing skills, ensemble singing, diction, dance, acting, and movement and stage combat are offered. A maximum of 50 students are chosen to participate each year. TSVI is made possible by a generous gift from George and Mary Torggler, retired entrepreneurs and longtime supporters of the arts and education.

Looks like a nice program. @SU88BFA has your son participated in this?

No, he has not, but we live in the same town as CNU, hear really positive things about the Torggler program, and can testify that the facilities and campus are VERY nice. I keep saying that in a few years, CNU’s BA non-audition program will turn into an audition program-- it’s really up-and-coming. CNU is a state school.

That’s great to hear! I remember showing that program to my D as a non audition safety. She opted not to go that route but I thought the same thing that it seemed like an up and coming program. Glad to hear it is growing

My daughter just got back from Torggler. She had a wonderful time. The instruction she got was top notch. And, she sang on stage with Patti Lupone! Her only complaints were she wished there was a bit more singing and the campus smelled strongly of fertilizer. LOL. She is currently at Orpheus Music Camp at Simpson College (where she’s gone for three years) and they do a LOT more singing on a daily basis. However, she was thrilled with the instruction she got and loved the performance opportunities (they sang in four recitals and with Ms. Lupone at her concert). Highlights also including getting to work with Liz Caplan (Neil Patrick Harris’ voice coach) on her musical theater song. She wants to go back next year.

My daughter just returned from a wonderful 4 weeks at CSSSA. She said she has never worked harder in her life! They offer 2 - 40K college scholarships for graduating seniors and 2- $2,500 ones as well…great program for Californians. http://www.csssa.org
Also if you are a CSSA grad and decide to attend CalArts they offer 10K merit scholarships.

does anyone know anything about the 1 week programs at Georgetown University in MT? It is through US Performing Arts Camps…

I have wondered about this program also, at Georgetown. We are close to DC so it is appealing…

@Theaterwork: Our D did a USPA camp at George Washington University in DC the summer after 8th grade. The camp was for high schoolers (she was entering high school that Fall). She had fun, met some nice people and learned a little. But subsequent experiences at other camps (OCU and mPulse) were more advanced and intense. That has been some years ago (she is a college sophomore now), so they may have changed the curriculum and format. It was a fun experience. But she preferred the training at other places if she had to choose between them.

Penn State is having a new summer MT program. http://theatre.psu.edu/summer-musicaltheatre

I don’t see the dates or any info on the link @mommabears26‌ am I missing something?
