Summer Science Program (SSP) 2011

Oh man. I’m waitlisted too.=</p>

are you international?

To fellow waitlisters: are you guys or girls? I hear that you can only take another spot from someone of the same gender, due to different dorms and such.*

I’ll probably be selling my soul to work at a hellish call center this summer though… Hope some of you decide not to go, haha. xD

As long as the assessors from SSP do not assume a clear criteria for admission(e.g. the number of places for international students/women/minorities/social-economical status, etc.) and do not return an answer telling the reasons for failing to qualify, they do a disfavor to some good students which competed. However, it does not matter how good is the student, the whole story remains sad. Good luck to everybody and do not be disappointed.

No, US students are still waiting. For those of you on waitlist, I think there is a good chance to still get in. Many students apply to multiple summer programs, I assume many SSP applicants apply to RSI as well. RSI will come out next week.

Well, I’d be disappointed if there were “international” quotas–especially since I’m an American citizen living overseas. Either way, it doesn’t change the fact that they didn’t see me as apt for the program as some other equally or more so competitive students.

This being said I can give you no better advice than to take the decision and move on. It may seem unfair (and it may well be), however, there is no significant reason to jump to that conclusion. The only reason I can see in my not being admitted is my not meeting expectations.

International or not, quota or not, those who were rejected (of which I am one) should neither rationalize their rejection with various ideas nor reject their own personal worth with regard to the rejection.

@Guardian : Yeah, International. Indian to be rather specific.
AND I’m a guy.
I really want to go, but I dont know what they’re doing this year. I mean, the international and US decisions are coming in separately, so I’m assuming they have separate waitlists? <that just=“” makes=“” it=“” worse.=“”>
I’ve also applied to SUMaC. (But I went last year, so I probably will get in)</that>

Alright, I finally got a confirmation email regarding the completeness of my application. For those wondering, I mailed it on the final day. Here’s the email:

So, anyone else thinking very late March/early April for US applicants?

No one got accepted? Any internationals got accepted?

The Summer Science Program seeks a diverse enrollment on the basis of gender, ethnicity, citizenship, national origin, and socioeconomic status. Young women, and students from racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in science, are especially encouraged to apply. what you think that is?

Maybe they choose internationals good enough to compete with the US applicants and then choose the 72 people from the waitlisted internationals + us applicants… or maybe that’s my hope to get in driving me suspicious xD geez, I’d really like to be in!!!

it is nothing about good enough ,all the student i think is good, passionate , all want to be there, i think they have a image about make it from some piece like a puzzle,if some body fits with that image can drive in,seems a Procrustean bed , so why I said that I think it’s sad

Well if they reserve international spots then I think people have already been selected. The waitlist probably works the same way the ‘American’ waitlist would, but for those same spots, in case someone got accepted to another program, etc.

I am rejected. Good luck to you all.

Hey, are US decisions sent by regular mail or e-mail?

I really hope I got in…I meet those diversity requirements ;] Female, immigrant, and parents never graduated high school. My recs should be pretty good since one of my teachers (physics) asked me to be his teaching assistant. I think my essays are alright too? (I had lots of people look over it.) My grades are pretty good (B in physics was brought up to an A, rest are all A’s)…Oh, waiting…worse than the application x_x

Yeswecan95, so I guess I fit the stereotype of the kind of person who won’t get in? I feel inferior…

I can’t wait until this thread explodes when US decisions hit in a couple weeks… Until then, we wait 0_0

^RSI decisions this week to pass the time!

Indeed, I’ve been keeping tabs on that thread as well. It’s all so exciting!

I think I’ll also be getting my SAT scores around the same time as results for this come out o.o
