S has a (well) paid internship in NYC this summer and is seeking furnished digs. He needs a place for ~10 weeks, and will be working near Wall Street, and be taking public transit.
Anyone have any suggestions for brokers (if needed) or links to local real estate listings?
I believe that colleges like NYU rent out dorm rooms for the summer - he should look into this - maybe try Pace which has dorms in the wall street area.
NYU housing is a good option, and if you want more info about any of the specifics of the different buildings, let me know. Otherwise, I would suggest facebook groups like Gypsy Housing or NYU/Pace groups as many students on leases try to sublet for the summer. Brokers and real estate listings are only helpful for 1 year + leases, not for sublets.
My friend subletted two summers in a tow from Columbia - in the international students housing (he is not international himself) - it is a great location and awesome awesome rates!
Brokers do work with sublets. That’s how Kiddo and roommates found theirs last summer in Manhattan. Not sure I’d recommend it, though—expensive fees, hassle, and apartments move fast----if there is another option to help locate housing.
My understanding is the NYU housing can be a good option. Lots of these housing options fill early, so pro-activity is important. If your son is looking on his own and not in or near the city, these university housing/ furnished intern housing options may be much easier than doing the intricate NYC broker dance, which can be expensive and time consuming, requiring st times lots of parent documentation and time on the ground during a busy transition season. I second treemaven’s cautions there.
A quick search yields lots of summer intern housing options in NYC. I can’t search now, but remember some very helpful recent CC threads on this topic, with people weighing in with their experiences in different places.
And yes, Ramon, his company did provide a link to NYU, but wasn’t sure how accommodating the Uni* is was. But based on the above reviews – better than yelp! – The Village seems like the way to go. He’s calling today.
*On the Left Coast, the UC housing offices are about as bad a bureaucracy as you will find anywhere in the world. (In comparison to the public Uni, the local DMV is like Nordstroms. relative to customer service.)
One of my customers from upstate NY has a daughter who had a summer sublet in the dorms at FIT. They are a good location too, easy subway ride downtown and close to both Union Square and Penn Station. FIT is on 7th Ave and 27/28 street
Check out the New School. http://www.newschool.edu/student-housing/summer/
D1 stayed at one of their dorms in Chelsea. Their dorms are all air conditioned, which is not the case for some of NYU’s dorms. NYC can be very hot and humid in the summer.
Summer housing at NYU has some specific points that your son should investigate early. Priority is given to NYU students and to non-NYU students who are studying at NYU over the summer. All others will be placed only after the two earlier groups, and only according to availability. So, it is important to apply as early as possible and know that you may not get your desired building. I agree with the earlier comment about a building with A/C. You don’t want to be in Manhattan in the summer without it. Non-NYU students can prioritize their choices for residence halls but are not able to choose a particular hall.
There are particular health insurance requirements as well, as non-NYU students do not have access to the NYU health center. MInimum stays are 8 weeks which likely won’t be a problem, and they must be moved out by August 15th. A mealplan is required in the traditional style dorms. No mealplan is required in the apt. style, and a single room is in the vicinity of $400/wk., and only available in the apt. style if you want a room with A/C.
The 92nd street YMHA is terrific. It has nice facilities, is in a great location, and residents also get use of all of the Y amenities. But it fills up VERY quickly for the summers (because it’s a nice option). If you are interested in that option…look right now!
We know more than a handful of kids doing summer internships who lived there. All raved about it.
