Funny but I don’t frequent beaches terribly often. The water will be cold in early June!
My favorite local beach is Crescent Beach.
If you want a small hidden gem, Ferry Beach State Park in Saco is quite nice. You have to walk through the woods to get to the beach. It’s small but not very crowded. Make sure to Google “Ferry Beach State Park” and not just “Ferry Beach,” because they are two different places.
Hmmm…if it’s that long a drive, look for the beaches near the Owls Head Light House. There are a couple. My husband just showed me pictures. Just beware that June is a cold time to go to the beach…and the water will be bitter cold!
@MaineLonghorn do you have black flies in Maine…I recall those in early June in NH when I lived there. Made outdoor activities…difficult.
Black flies are the worst in May. They’re still around in early June, but more in the woods, I think. I never go to beaches that time of year, though, so I’m not sure.
Have alternative activities planned that time of year. One time our family went up to Acadia for a week in June and the sun was out literally for about one hour, on Wednesday afternoon. It rained and rained and rained…
Exactly. My husband’s trip to the Owls Head Light House area was on a bright clear and sunny fall day. Our son went to exactly the same place and it was both cloudy and foggy. DS was not impressed.
Gosh, I would go back to Acadia in a heartbeat if it were me, particularly that time of year. We’ve been up there many times and feel like we’ve barely scratched the surface of things to see and do.
Also, is there any way you could go later in the summer?
I saw Camden mentioned above by @thumper1 . We enjoyed it but just for an afternoon - but it was quite nice. Our favorite small town was actually Portsmouth NH - it blew away (for us) any town in Maine - but again, just a day trip.
We spent a few days in Portland (hotels were $500 a night but got a great deal on Marriott points at the AC downtown). I know we biked on an island - and went to some famous donut place for a potato donut.
I don’t think any “coastal” Maine town (at least that we went to) is worthy of multiple days…they are nice to walk, eat, and go to the next.
Maine is my happy place. Love going there, very relaxing. Since we get out there for short trips, usually, it’s south maine. Portland, Ogunquit, Peaks Island are some of my favorites. Walking the Marginal Way in Ogunquit is something we do everytime we are up there. Popham beach is further out, but a gorgeous non rocky beach (one of the very few in Maine).
Boothbay Harbor is a fun place. My son and I stayed there a couple of nights at the end of May. The Coastal Botanical Gardens are a must see - just gorgeous. We also went on a puffin tour. There is a colony of about 2,000 of them on an island not too far away.
I’ve been to the beach at Pemaquid once, but I really don’t know anything about the area.
I’ve spent time in Portsmouth and don’t agree that it beats most Maine towns. I guess preferences differ (I’m not a Mainer originally so I’m not biased in that respect).
It was our favorite - and we were in Camden, Boothbay (did the botanical garden) - I think it comes down to what is a person seeking. We live in a cute downtown and we’re just sort of walk around, eat - and if there’s an attraction do that - but at least for us, I can’t see spending multiple days in any Maine town.
But what everyone likes to do is different- so it’s up to OP.
I also keep thinking - why Maine? I say this because lots of suggestions to other places were given and I believe the OPs daughter ED’d to Bowdoin - so they might be in Maine all the time…maybe try somewhere different But that’s personal choice too.
Yeah, we definitely could be spending time in Maine with C25’s top two choices there. We are just really drawn to Oregon and Maine and went to Oregon the past two summers. We also enjoyed, Vermont, Washington, and BC. Really we go for somewhat easy flights on Southwest since we have lots of miles there.
