Invited to First-Year Research Immersion Program and Binghamton University Scholars program!
My son was also!
Do you know anything about the programs? Like, are students pretty happy with their participation or are they not worth the extra work?
I read abt both on reddit a little bit, and it seemed like people genuinely liked both. Majority said that the First-Year Research Program was a lot of work but opened doors for future research and led to good letters of recc while completing writing gen eds. People said Scholars tend to have like priority registration, 3500 one time use for internship or study abroad or other experience, internal transfer to any major guaranteed at the end of freshman year, and thereâs priority given to you if you choose to do a graduate degree at binghamton, a premed internship, and an advisor for grad school or career placement.
EY as well!
Does anyone know when regular decisions typically start to roll out? Also, does anyone have any history as to when deferred applicants have heard back after deferred to regular decision? I know they say April, but I canât imagine they wait that long.
My D was Bing Class of 23 (OOS student from MA) and involved with both scholars and FRI. She was a Bio/Spanish double major at Harpur. Her FRI stream was biological anthropology and she absolutely loved itâto the point where she became a TA for the program and had her professor give her a reference for her current job.
She was not as enamored with Scholarsâthough the housing freshman year was niceâand felt that this was mostly extra work. She also said that many of the other âscholarsâ thought a lot of themselves. She did feel that the scholars classes helped to provide a GPA cushion.
Let me know if you have any other questions. My D really loved Bing.
This is really great information! As we start digging into details, Iâll let you know if we have any questions. Thank you!
I heard this too about the extra classes and work not being worth it. But perhaps ask to speak to a counselor on what benefits it has as far as internship opportunities, networking, special advisors, access to register for classes first, etc.
My daughter applied regular decision 11/27 and got her acceptance 1/17.
Just received email tonight notifying her she received the Presidentâs Scholarship - 14K per year for 4 years!
Is it confirmed that Bing doesnât give scholarship to instate?
for everyone who was accepted instate, did you get anything about the cost etc?
Unless something changes this year, Bing does not give merit to instate students.
Good, at least no need to wait for the emailâŠ
@MAmomto4 @CraTer rather than relying on hearsay, I encourage you to have a look at the website and talk to the school: First-Year Research Immersion (FRI) | First-year Research Immersion | Binghamton University
Typically, these programs give students an advantage. There is a reason they are invited to join. Students who participate in these types of programs will be able to secure professor recommendations that will help them with internships, summer research positions, and various competitive scholarship programs such as Fulbright, etc. Research projects can be added to rĂ©sumĂ©s. If a student doesnât think these possibilities are worth it, they have the option not to join.
As for Bingâs campus, imo, itâs reasonably compact. In fact, the campus is roughly circular and pretty quick to cross. There is a reason itâs known as the Brain:
There is one very ugly building on campus, but the rest of campus is modern and attractive with plenty of tress and green space. There is an absolutely beautiful nature preserve attached to campus.
Itâs funny, but just last night I texted my son, class of 2023, about Bing and he replied with âI love Bing.â No, itâs not for everyone, but it has a very high freshman retention rate of 92%, so that means people are happy.
I read that they release invitations into the honors program in stages. Does anyone know how broad the timeline is for that?
Yeah, the campus has a very spread-out, modern-like feel to it. If gothic or cathedral-like buildings are more someoneâs thing, or if you love the feel of a bustling campus, it isnât that. I noticed that, too.
But that doesnât diminish the quality of the academics or the overall very happy student body with a retention rate way higher than average. And I was really impressed with the campus woods. We visited way too many campuses in the college search, and the tours all kind of sounded the same by the end. The thing that most impressed me about Bing was that the tour actually had unique elements to it.
Agree - def does not diminish the quality of the academics or happiness of the student body! I just think my daughter had built up something totally different in her mind and it just was not what she was looking for. I also think it helped her realize that she prefers an urban campus. We were both excited about it going in - but it just speaks to the importance of campus visits. I know so many kids love it there!
Great question. Our son was accepted a while ago and we just got the Honors invitation in the mail today which was exciting.
