Super Bowl

Surprise report. Gronk may retire. Reports are the hit that caused the concussion was the hardest hit he’s ever had against him.

I think he’d be smart to do so. Health first. He’s a young guy. Best to save his brain. Seems like he’s been smart about saving his $$$, too.

Super Bowl ads get graded.

IMO, a C is too high for Bud Light. I give them a D-.

I love Gronk. I remember being so impressed when I heard that he saved all his NFL earnings and just lived off his endorsement money. He’s only 28. He should get out before he gets even more banged up. I think this concussion really scared him and it should.

The only ad I really liked was the Amazon Alexa commercial. That was great.

D is too high for that Dodge ad using MLK Jr to sell trucks. Epic fail.

Also, though, I would have given an A to their Vikings-having-to-turn-around ad, which was very clever. (We Are the Champions!..but nope.) But then they did the awful other ad, so after all, they can keep their B.

At least it’s not herpes duplex, if ya get my drift…

Actually, that Yahoo report gave the Dodge ad with MLK an “F.” It deserved an even lower grade, if that were possible. Seriously - what was Dodge thinking?

I really liked the Toyota “All One Team” commercial.

^oops, read too quickly. Good!

As a die-hard Pats fan, I’m the first to admit we were outplayed. Brady had a terrible game but Foles was terrific, superstar material, on fire, and I’m happy for him. The best team won. I hope Gronk gets out now, the NFL will use and abuse him until he bows out (of course you can only be used and abused if you allow it).

My favorite commercial was Kia with Steven Tyler, that was fun. The halftime show was underwhelming at best, didn’t help that the audio was so poor. And Pink, she is always awesome! One of my all time favorite performers.

^Have to disagree. Brady threw for over 500 yds. The crowd favorite won. And, that’s a good thing. Sometimes.

^yea, you’re right, I shouldn’t have said terrible. All those in the know are saying it may be his best game ever but IMHO he just didn’t look himself, he didn’t look as confident as he usually does; in fact, one might say he looked a bit rattled.

I fell asleep on the sofa after I got home at 6:30, So when I woke up I started watching an ESPN highlight thing to see what happened. Seconds into it, a player was removed from the field with a head injury. Turned it off.

I am glad that Gronkowski may retire. I hope its not already too late for him.

@BunsenBurner re: 242

D- is a higher grade than the beer merits – at least the ads passed.

Thoughts about the game:

  • The refs actually were pretty fair overall. They called a lot more penalties on the Eagles, but the questionable (first) TD catch went Philly's way. The second one was a catch, and run, and dive for the goal line -- not sure why it was even reviewed.
  • Brady makes hay when he has a clean pocket, but if you hit him or make him move, he becomes a very average QB and his mobility per se is below average. Philly had no pass rush for the middle 80% of the game and not much coverage either, and Brady threw for 500. But add pressure to the mix and he struggles. He is not Aaron Rodgers, John Elway or Steve Young -- guys who can make great throws under pressure or outside the pocket. This, to me, is why he is not the GOAT. The "Super Bowls are everything" crowd think he is because of them, but he doesn't pass the talent/ability test. He requires a pristine pocket; a real GOAT wouldn't. He is a really smart, accurate passer though. A lot like Marino, Montana and Peyton in that respect.

Rather than naming a GOAT at the QB (or RB…) spot, I think it’s better to leave it at 10-15 GOATs, since every guy has faults – lack of ability/game, lack of a SB win (though that is a team achievement…), lack of brain, too many picks, etc. Montana, Rodgers, Brees, Unitas, Brady, Peyton, Marino, Favre, Elway, Fouts, Moon – that’s a pretty good group of 11 GOATs.

  • Philly D... what was that for 57 minutes? Horrendous defense. But you got a stop when you had to.
  • Nick Foles... your performance exceeded my wildest dreams. Nearly every pass was a good ball and on target. And you caught the one thrown to you, unlike your counterpart. What a performance!
  • Eagles and fans, congrats on your first Super Bowl win and first NFL championship in ages.
  • If the Pack can't be in it, my dream matchup remains Browns/Lions -- two old, proud franchises who've never even been to the big one.

Two playoff games in a row, some headhunting PoS took one of the best Patriots players off the field. It looked targeted and deliberate to me. The NFL needs a rule change that if you knock a player out of the game on a head shot, you get ejected and suspended. It’s the only way players will stop going after the head, a penalty (not even a penalty in this case) and a fine is not enough.

And I don’t know what Belichick was trying to prove by benching Butler, but it backfired big-time. That was one of the worst defensive performances of the year. The Eagles punted once the entire game, and scored on 8 of 10 drives. Just a terrible game. Maybe playing your no. 2 cornerback might have helped?? IBWT but god he makes it hard sometimes.

It’s hard to fault Brady - 10.5 yards per attempt, 18.0 yards per completion, 0 interceptions are incredible numbers, and it didn’t look like the ball was zipping out of his hand, which is probably not fully recovered from the cut a few weeks ago.

Overall though, the Eagles played better, and Pederson’s creative and hyper-aggressive play-calling paid off, as the Patriots couldn’t get off the field - Eagles won the time of possession battle by a ton, 2-2 on fourth down, and scored on 8 of 10 offensive drives. If the Patriots get even one more stop or one more offensive drive, they probably win. Foles was absurd, the way he was dropping passes into tight coverage was ridiculous. He’s about the most schizophrenic qb ever - his 2013 season was amazing, then he turned into Mr. Mediocre Career Backup until two games ago. It’s like he was suddenly possessed by the ghost of Johnny Unitas or something.

Not particularly impressed with the Eagles’ defense, although they came up with a big play at just the right time. How did the Vikings only put up 7 points on these guys?

Ah well - it was a pretty exciting game. The Patriots came from 10 down at the half to have a lead in the 4th quarter, but the Eagles responded and got the win.

Congrats to the Eagles, we’re on to next season!

He is smart about saving his money, but that article is a crock of hooey. Gronk has made $44 million in his career from playing, $10 million of that was this season and $28 million in the last 3 years. After taxes, probably less than $30 million.

Which is a lot, but his net worth is nowhere near the $150 million claimed in that article. I’m sure he’s got enough to live on for the rest of his life if he doesn’t go crazy. So many athletes let their money slip through their fingers though.

He’s got another $19 million coming the next two seasons, my guess is he at least plays out his contract.

Good article about Lurie, eagles owner, and his journey and obsession about beating Patriots - ( new to me although more avid fans might know all this )

Happy for the Eagles and longtime fans! Sorry for the idiots who behaved so badly in the streets of Philadelphia afterwards. That isn’t the way to celebrate. And, yes, I know it wasn’t everyone but it was far too many creating havoc and destruction.

UMass Amherst had a lot of chaos.

Loved “It’s a Tide ad”. Didn’t really care about game but was pulling for Gamecocks in Super Bowl - Alshon Jeffreys for Eagles and Stephon Gilmore for Pats. They played on same UofSC team. Interesting that Alshon had less success when covered by Gilmore.
