Super Civil Thread on Florida v. Zimmerman

Would you say the same for TM’s mother and brother?

Poetgrl, do you have the link to the video where GZ said he was being smothered by TM?

If GZ was the one screaming all the way right before the gunshot then he is lying in that video where he said he was being smothered. Since he has lied and/or embellished a few times, I would NOT believe his self-defense claim. At the very least, manslaughter.

If GZ was NOT the one screaming all the way right before the gunshot then I agree with calmom that murder 2 is a valid conviction.

I can’t figure out how GZ couldn’t wriggle out while he was underneath TM (presuming GZ was indeed underneath TM)? Just lift up your leg in a bent position and hit your knee onto TM’s back? Keep doing it again and again. Also, lift up your butt, side chop TM’s thigh…

KR, it was on the tape of his interview with the police. I heard it during the trial. I don’t have any links. Sorry.

MommaJ, I thought the same thing. And the whole idea that a grown man could sound like a little girl when screaming…in what way is it plausible that a voice could be that different and still be recognizable?

We will never know all of the details that happened that day. But the sad thing is, if GZ had obeyed the 911 operator’s advice to stay in his vehicle, TM would still be alive.

Everyone keeps maintaining that GZ had a right to defend himself. But didn’t TM have the same? Some stranger comes out and threatens a teen who isn’t doing anything wrong, that teen is going to panic and defend himself. Both were operating out of fear by the time TM was shot.

Talking head just pointed out that GZ said he had pistol holstered in back of him, so if a Martin was straddling him on top, with his back pinned to the ground, how did he get at his gun?

I think the prosecution should have greatly streamlined its case focussing quite simply on the contradictions between GZ’s statements and the known circumstances. Maybe they’ll do that on rebuttal and closing.

GZ said on a tape he had the gun holstered to his side. I don’t know why some folks think it was on his back.

Zimmerman walk-through video. It should have the TM covering GZ mouth part when GZ starts to describe the moment that he pulled the gun.

latichever, I’m wondering if the prosectuters presented a lot of evidence that won’t be a big deal at the end of the day in order to avoid jurors wondering why it wasn’t addressed. They wouldn’t want the jurors, who already know a lot about the case, to have unanswered questions that begin to loom too large in deliberations and have the jury get sidetracked by wondering why X or Y wasn’t brought up.

I’ve been on a conference call most of the morning and am on it right now (you can see how fascinating the call is…) so haven’t heard any of the defense case. How’s it going?

“GZ is getting slammed for trying to do something about his neighborhood.”

He is trying to keep his community healthy by hunting down people who buy those evil Skittles. ;)

I have heard a mature male’s voice go unrecognizable when nearly cornered by a rattler. My understanding is that the idea of voice stress analysis is that changes in the voice indicate different circumstances.

Trayvon Martin was no criminal. May he rest in peace. He was killed because of someone stalking him, and assuming that he was a criminal. This is America everyone. All we can do is pray.

I ran into a possum when throwing out compost recently. I certainly didn’t recognize my own scream.

I’m late to this thread, so if I’m covering old ground let me know.

I seem to recall that TM’s father early in the game said that the voice screaming was not that of TM but changed his mind after hearing some “enhanced” version. Is that something that anyone recalls or has heard discussed at the trial?

GZ’s mother was clear it was GZ’s voice. GZ’s uncle was clear it was GZ’s voice. And several friends have said it was GZ. I don’t know if GZ’s father testified.

Maybe it was BOTH their voices. It seems unlikely that one was yelling and the other completely silent.

think 07Dad was asking about TM’s dad. I hadn’t heard that, I believe TM’s brother initially stated it sounded like Trayvon, but he wasn’t 100% sure. He was on the stand last week and explained that was because he was still in denial.

Oops, I read it wrong. I don’t think TM’s dad testified.

OK, I went back and this google search “Trayvon’s Murder: Father Says Voice’s Not Trayvon’s” is a Youtube recording of a local Florida television News Reporter reporting on statements by the Sanford police that said that early in the investigation they played a 911 tape for TM’s father and he said it was not TM’s voice.

Interesting if TM’s father did not testify.

Right. What the defense is apparently trying to do (I heard it on Fox News so it must be true:)) is establish that good, upstanding people in the community believe in GZ and his story–to suggest, by association, that GZ too is a good, upstanding person. Well, GZ’s past actions demonstrate otherwise. And people (perhaps not the jury, though–not sure) know that his family is well-connected and would likely have people who would vouch for him. Heck, the business associate has already profited off the case FROM THE BOOK SHE WROTE WITH HER HUSBAND about the case.

Bottom line–I don’t think the screams will be conclusive, except to possibly make it worse for GZ (how was he screaming continuously while being punched? didn’t TM allegedly have one had over his mouth and the other over his nose?). The evidence will not support this claim.

I have wondered about this as well. And here too, I believe the claim of self-defense can cancel itself out for both the defendant and the victim (not that he’s on trial). Who was scared first? Trayvon Martin. Who was trying to get away? Trayvon Martin. Who went after him in hot pursuit, even after being told to stop? George Zimmerman. And who did NOT try to defuse the situation, as the Neighborhood Watch rules require, but enflamed it by getting into a confrontation during which TM may or may not have seen GZ’s gun? BOTH parties were likely “scared” at different points in the evening. Only one survived.
