Sharing my favorite quote from today on another board…
" Women empowerment is about women doing whatever they want to do at whatever age they want to do with out society or especially other women judging or telling us its wrong or shaming them."
Historically, that was the only talent that was really appreciated in women. And while it does take a lot of stamina and athleticism, let’s not glamorize provocative dancing as an empowerment choice-way too often, it is the only choice for poverty stricken teens with nothing else to sell. One of my kids went to school briefly with a 14 year old stripper. The reality of pole dancing is pretty gritty.
I’ll have to disagree with you though. Women healers, care takers, etc are long-established talents that have been appreciated in women throughout history in the western world.
And no, you’re right - it’s not always a choice. It’s horrific that anyone is forced into anything because of mere survival - especially in the wealthiest nation on earth. But that is a completely separate issue (IMO) from women deciding that they’re strong, beautiful, and want to show it off to the world.
Stripping under 18 is illegal and, again, a completely separate issue.
ETA: That’s the last I’ll say on that. I loved the halftime show. I’m incredibly jealous of the way those women can move - especially when they’re a few decades older than me!
@MomofWildChild@Leigh22 Another Eagles fan who is happy to see Andy Reid win! I’m not in the city right now and H and I have been wondering if fans are happy for him or mad he couldn’t win Super Bowl with the Eagles …
Shakira and JLo were entertaining and are in phenomenal physical shape, but *snark alert I was totally distracted by Shakira’s hair - kept sticking to her lip gloss and can JLo even move her face anymore??? I know there is a lot of pressure to look young and wrinkle free, but wow.
Google ad made me cry. And I was moved by the 4 decorated WWII vets.
@houndmom we are in the City and had a Superbowl party. Everyone was rooting for Andy Reid to win and we were all very happy for him. Some of the sports radio personalities were not. All of my co-workers today expressed that they were also rooting for him!
Not that I am a representative of all of Philadelphia;)
From what I can tell from social media, Philadelphia is thrilled for Andy Reid. The Eagles organization put out some wonderful congratulatory messages.
As a long time fan of Shakira, if she didn’t come out and do just as she did, I would have been highly disappointed. The way she can move is incredible to me. Watch her VMA performance from 2002.
Maybe there is a time and place for everything, and we don’t have much consensus on decorum anymore. My guess is most of us dont wear twerk and wear sexy clothes at a funeral. Maybe some do. Maybe some do on tv at half time, others do not.
With respective net worth of 400 and 300 million dollars, I don’t expect these stars were doing it for the money.
Right. So the question is, was halftime at the super bowl the right place for this outfit/production? There are clubs where, for example, nude performances are fine. For those who wish to attend, great, enjoy, and participate If you feel so inclined. But that might not be appropriate for a televised national show (except on certain cable channels). The question is, where does this fall on the spectrum of what is appropriate for a televised half time? We all understand what nude bodies look like, and what sex is, and nothing wrong with either, but some may feel it isn’t what they signed up to watch in a ball game.
??? Twerk is a dance move, not an item of clothing. That said, while it was a bit risque’, its not like people were surprised by what they wore or how they danced. If I looked like that at 50, I’d maybe have flaunted it too! Well, maybe not, but… good for J LO!!
I’ll be honest I rewatched all but the last few minutes of the show again and clothing wise just about everything was covered in terms of breasts and bottoms (nothing worse than a bathing suit on a shapely woman). Yes, they were form fitting - I’ll be honest I think that is what has some people bend out of shape - that both of these women have very shapely bodies that were emphasized (but not revealed) during the half time show! No fat rolls, muffin top, flabby arms!
Also, there were no nude bodies. TIght clothing with some skin revealed, yes.
I’m not going to change anyone’s mind here. I’ll just say if I was doing a survey those against this performance better not EVER watch The Bachelor/Bachelorette, Housewife shows, and ALL the other risque shows on television.
This is what we see on the Super Bowl. Have you watched the Super Bowl in the last 20 years? Ok, great. You know what you’re going to get. If I have young kids I don’t want to see it or am offended by it myself, my adult mind can pick up the remote and change the channel for the 12-15 minutes it is on.
