Superbowl Discussion thread

Shakira also gave a couple of nods to her Lebanese background (the belly dancing, the tongue thing.)

I thought it was fun and they did a great job. It didn’t feel any more scantily-clad than performances in the past, including Gaga’s sparkly undies and Adam Levine showing off his ravines.

JLo is a jack of all trades, and master of none. To me, it couldn’t have been more obvious than it was last night.

Shakira, a legendary talent, has the whole world talking with her performance.

But JLo phones it in, and is then showered with credit for a great show by virtue of being on the same stage as Shakira.

@OhiBro You summed it up very well. For me, there was a huge difference in actual talent on the stage.
JLo always seems to just be going through the motions.

Commercials I loved - Lil Nas X and Post Malone Doritos.
Groundhog Day.
Alexa with Ellen.
Big Snickers Bar.
Google commercial made me cry.

I was struck by the juxtaposition of the commercial messages about female empowerment of bright, talented women with a half time show celebrating sexy pole dancing women.

I missed the cage symbolism.

Getting back to the game, a few observations. I though Garoppolo played awful in the 4th quarter. Down by four points with time winding down, he had Emmanuel Sanders wide open for a go-ahead TD and overthrew him by a good five yards. Montana and Steve Young wouldn’t have missed that throw. Also, the Niners’ defense giving up that third and fifteen with KC deep in their own end was a killer. Those two plays probably cost the Niners the game. Richard Sherman got beat like a drum on that pass to Sammy Watkins which set up the game winning score.

Yes, @TheBigChef .

Also, even the non-reversal of the go-ahead touchdown is worth mentioning. If KC were forced to settle for a tying field goal, that changes the entire dynamic that follows.

Nice to see the season end with such a competitive game after so many boring playoff games.

It is not something I am drawn to do but pole dancing has more meaning and presence than just at strip clubs. It is considered a form of art/dance and is a popular fitness choice/challenge for many people. Lots of classes that non-famous, not fully fit choose as a creative form of expression.

Not to mention you have to be darn strong to do it with grace.

Oh, I forgot the frustrating thing that happened locally. Just as a play was about to start, a Spectrum ad came on! I checked with my Facebook friends and it was just a local issue. It happened to be a play where the Chiefs threw an interception. So frustrating! How in the world did that happen?

And the rope?

I have seen a few assertions online (so of course it’s true) that the rope symbolizes captivity and people of color. Who knows - but it was her choice to include it or not.

One of the Pilates instructors I work with and a college friend (ahem, late 50’s) also do pole fitness. To @abasket’s point, it is vigorous physical exercise that I’ll never be able to do. Way more than a strip club activity. To each their own.

I thought the show was great. I was disappointed the 49er’s lost, but good to see some new teams take the big stage.

You can see a longer version of her rope dance on YouTube. I like her belly dancing.

Full disclosure: I took lessons about a million years ago.

I for one know that sexy pole dancing women can also be bright and talented. Multifaceted and such.

OK- I just watched the halftime show and I didn’t like it. I’m a country music fan, so there’s that- I just didn’t like this music and I did think it was very sexualized, but a lot of music and dancing is. I just didn’t care for any of it. I wasn’t offended- just didn’t like it.

Sex sells, even in 2020. Particularly women as sexual objects, even when they are otherwise middle aged and accomplished and could be celebrated for their talent instead of their skimpy outfits.

@roycroftmom , you’re minimizing, or even ignoring the tremendous talent that Shakira displayed.

Think of it this way. There are many women across the world that could wear such an outfit and look great. But how many could perform like that? Probably close to zero.

TBH, I would much rather my daughter emulate Shakira than any of those female astronauts from the commercials.

Lol, I enjoyed last night’s Superbowl halftime show - I admired both ladies’ many talents (loved their powerful dancing and voices). I also enjoyed Adam Levine’s shirtless prior Superbowl performance. Maybe I’m just shallow.

They are both beautiful and talented. And no more scantily dressed than most performers; however, the camera angle seemed to be aimed at crotch level on those squats and I thought that was in poor taste.

I fondly remember Adam Levine’s performance (sans shirt) and the reactions of the numerous women in the room - for the most part we were impressed! The men’s responses were very funny.

As a Philly girl I was pleased to see Reid win the big game. His time here wasn’t always smooth, but for the most part we were cheering for him and his family.

Born to Puerto Rican parents.

Her heritage is important to her. She feels strong ties to PR.

And then Shakira is from Colombia.

It was a very heavily, unapologetically latinx show and I LOVED it. I love it even more seeing the people who are angry about it being “un-American”

ETA: And in regards to the pole dancing - think about the extreme athletic skill it takes to pole dance. Especially well.

Honestly, if someone thinks that clothing and pole dancing is debasing to women, that’s on them. I love it. And yes, I think it is empowering to women who want to do it. You want to pole dance, belly dance, wear glitter? Go for it! You do you, chica. These women are mega stars who own their own businesses and have championed causes based on their celebrity. I wouldn’t mind my child looking up to them as role models.
