Did any international student on this forum who plays a musical instrument other than the ones recognised by an average american (like a guitar, piano etc i.e. the western instruments) send in a tape recording of his playing? Will they even be able to evaluate recordings of instrumements and dances that they do not know about? or will it still boost your app?

I play the most exotic instrument - a computer! Basically, I’m a one man band who submitted samples of his compositions. Duke has so far reviewed it. Don’t know about others.

i submitted a portfoilio of drawings, paintings, sculpture and a bunch of other stuff.

i submitted my computer animation works.

Hmm… Looks like the talents you guys have are atleast known the world over and congrats on your special talents! The instrument I play isn’t known 2Km outside my country! So I was in a great dilemma as to whether i should send a tape considering that no one at the university would be able to evaluate it. Looks like I won’t send it after all.

tabla, eh ;)

yup! howdy know? akash or anchal?

*** bruno how do you think they don’t know about tabla??? half of the univs TEACH tabla in their music department :p

SEND IT. But it better be good. ;)

Im not too arty like u ppl, but i did submit a college-level thesis that I did…(70 pages long…) + another econ research paper. its all too academic for me :p

yeah merc you’re right partially. Some univs like UPENN do teach tabla but my first choice univs don’t have a good south asian department so they do not have a teacher who might actually be able to understand tabla coz it is so different from normal western drums. one really does need to know indian classical music to appreciate the tabla. anyway, hope my app does the job in letting them know about my music thingy.

callthecops, a research paper is an excellent thing to submit. i really wish i had done some scientific research at high school. but there are no such opportunities available in india for high schoolers. especially if you’re applying to univs like JHU or columbia, a good research thesis is bound to impress them.

actually bruno, for those univs I think being able to play an ethnic instrument is a big hook. :)

merc is right. i mean i really regret not playing an instrument…I would have been even more “well rounded” cuz I already have 3 varsity soccer letters and a cross country one, and a letter in drama. BTW bruno, if u played something like the trombone or the sax etc, u would have a great chance at ie. princeton. This year they really want to boost their band i heard…well it is still interesting to be able to play a non-western instrument. something “unique”

Bruno…I didnt need any facilities for research for. I was very practical when I chose what research to do. I knew that I needed to study for at least another 4 yrs or 6 yrs (Masters) to be able to come up with something new in either science or math. something related to psychology, sociology, education, can be understood and practiced by students in HS. I did a thesis on Third Culture Kids and global citizenship, and did some field studies (surveys and interviews). I mean unless i was the next einstein (who knows, i might be
) it would have been tough to acutally discover something new in physics, chem, bio, or math.
