I might also do the same for his 18 year old freshman brother. Though I do wonder, if they have one - do they want another???
(I know, I know I could just ask their parents but I’m trying to be creative here and just get a gift without asking too many specifics - I already asked for gift card ideas!)
Even if he doesn’t use a wallet, you can still use it as the holder for your gift cards. One of the favorite presents I ever gave my kids was a small wallet that had a bunch of gift cards in it.
I don’t think either used the wallet, but both loved the gift cards…and the wallet was a good thing to wrap up as a gift with those gift cards.
I think what you’ve linked to is a good idea, @abasket. I think of it more as a card holder than a full fledged wallet - much more stream lined and therefore easier to carry. Plus, it is very reasonably priced so even if he doesn’t use it a lot, it isn’t a huge investment. Heck, many greeting cards can cost $5-6 these days!
^^ So true! Which is why I rarely do cards - it’s a waste to me! (see climate change thread…)
These are very reasonable and honestly even if they used them only for storing their gift cards (right? We’re always looking for something to corral the gift cards in) that could be useful. I hate to buy something -even at $12 that doesn’t get use.
I have 18 y/o and 16 y/o sons and both use wallets. My 16 y/o only got his license a month or so ago, but he’s had a wallet since he was about 13 y/o or so, originally to hold his school ID but now it holds his license and debit card. He doesn’t keep gift cards in it - he leaves them at home and just takes them on the day when he plans to use them (just in case he leaves his wallet accidentally somewhere at school, etc). But I think a wallet is a great gift idea, especially given with a couple of gift cards inside.
By the way if anyone IS looking for a simple wallet, the one I posted my son LOVES. Very thin and minimalist. Good for women too! Bought one for my daughters last year and they use them often - great for slipping their ID, credit card and a few bucks when they are going out!
My youngest started going into the city when he was 15 or so, I think he had a Gortex type wallet. My SIL’s brother (in his 50s Brooklyn type) has a tyvek wallet. https://paperwallet.com/collections/wallets I do too. They don’t last forever, but they make me happy.
@maya54 I just asked my kids, including my 20 y/o daughter, and they all said they carry cash. S1 goes to school in an area where taxis are super cheap and more prevalent than Uber and prefer cash. D1 goes to school in So CA and said she and her friends often eat at hole in the wall Mexican places that only take cash so she usually has at least $20 on her.
Dh uses a money clip though that looks similar to the Amazon link but has a clip for his money/bills.
I have 3 boys: 14 year old twins and a 16 year old. They all 3 use wallets. They carry their debit card, a little cash and my eldest has his drivers license. They all 3 recently got nice Fossil wallets with their initials embossed on them.
Both of my kids just carry their license, student ID, & CC in their phone case. My son’s case flips open so its a little like a combined phone case & wallet, but my daughter’s is just a hard plastic phone case with a little sliding “door” on the back. They don’t carry actual cards for things like AAA or health insurance, they just keep photos of those or have apps they can log into. Most of their friends have a similar set up.
It would serve the purpose at about 1/2 the price. Sadly, can’t remember what S used at age 13, but I think he’d like something with gift cards that came with something to hold them elegantly.
This is a dangerous thread. I researched and bought two wallets because of it. Oh well, I’m sure my niece & nephew will be happy. By the way, Whole Foods will now take Amazon returns, as long as the merchandise is under 50 pounds–yay!
My almost 21 year old son has had a wallet since middle school. We just replaced his since it was tearing with another one. Has ids, debit /credit card, and yes real cash in his wallet. No phone case thing.
I personally like a traditional wallet. The ones the OP mentioned are nice but I would be leary of something falling out. Plus I don’t want everything showing like that when taking it out.
The giftee is 15. We’ve had experience with this specific wallet and it has been a winner. My son is a smart, mature guy but Mr. Loser-Of-Things and has loved the wallet. So I’m sold on this particular wallet!
