The common data set for '23-'24 has been released. Some of us speculated about the admissions rates in last year’s thread:
19,990 were admitted out of the 46,357 who applied, for a 43% acceptance rate. That is a 9% decrease from the previous year. 4058 enrolled, meaning the yield held steady at ~20%.
5933 students accepted a spot on the waitlist, and 1647 of those were offered admission off the waitlist, for a rate of 28%.
For ED: 2182 applied and 1439 were accepted, for a 66% acceptance rate. ~1/3 of the incoming class was accepted ED. The ED and RD acceptance rates didn’t differ much the previous year, so this is a pretty big change from that.
The acceptance rate has mostly fluctuated +/- 5 points around 50% in the last decade. There was a huge spike up to 69% for '20-'21 and then 59% for '21-'22 presumably due to covid. It came back down to 52% last year.
Some websites are still showing an overall admit rate of 59%. And the admit rate for some majors is a lot lower than others. So if an applicant is looking at old data and applying to a more selective major, they may not be categorizing their chances accurately. I will be curious to see if the acceptance rates continue to decrease, or if they fluctuate around 50% like they have in the past.
