My D just heard that she did not get accepted in her major (business/marketing) at UT Austin. At UT, you have to be accepted into the university and your major. She’s devastated and wondering what all her hard work has been for. She considered UT her ‘safety’ school as per Texas state law; she’s an autoadmit to the university, and her stats make her more than qualified to get into the business school. Her remaining admissions are all to ‘reach’ schools, minus Syracuse. So she’s not hopeful at all for any future good news. An acceptance into Syracuse with some merit money would be a big win in our house! It’s going to be a long February and March waiting for all these decisions!
I’m really sorry to hear she didn’t get her major at UT. That is so rough after having the autoadmit. Did she have any safeties other than UT Austin? Perhaps other public schools in Texas?
How much “interest” has she shown in Syracuse? That is something they like to see, so she might consider hopping on some more virtual sessions, open every email, engage with their social media, connect with the AO, etc.
She sounds like a great candidate and she has a real shot at Syracuse. But I just want you to be prepared because there were a lot of folks who were surprised and disappointed to be waitlisted or rejected last year. This was especially true for people applying to majors within Whitman (which is the school where assumed your daughter applied), who regarded it as a safety / match. Syracuse acceptance rates vary quite a bit by school, and Whitman is one of the most selective ones. I hope you get great news and yes, the waiting is really hard!
She’s been accepted to 3 other schools besides UT, all considered safeties, but none that she’s really excited about. And only one of them offered enough aid to make it affordable.
For her interest in Syracuse, she’s done a bit. We’ve attended a campus tour and she’s reached out to the AO with a couple of questions, but that’s about it. She’s a pretty quiet kid and is almost too practical for her own good. When I suggest reaching out to the AO with a question, her answer is “Google will answer that for me.” But I will continue to persuade her to attend some virtual sessions and engage with social media. Thank you!
Can anyone share the dates for admitted students day? Manifesting lol
They have not announced the on campus dates yet. This was communicated last week on the admitted students information webinar. I previously shared above (#8) a link to their admitted student events calendar. You may want to bookmark it and follow your admitted student’s college for more information. Whitman School has a virtual admitted students celebration webinar next Wednesday.
My D24 is in a similar situation: she was unexpectedly rejected by the BArch program at Penn State, a considered safety school on her list, but she’s unwilling to consider other programs there. She was deferred by Cornell/MIT and now anxiously awaiting RD decision for BArch program at Syracuse and some other schools.
When will RD be announced?
No specific date, but likely Friday 3/15 or Friday 3/22 based on previous years. Someone here said they may dribble out some decisions earlier.
Saw a note above asking about admitted students day that are not yet published. I reached out to a Syracuse AOs on a FB college admissions group and he IMd me to provide these dates: April 1,5,8,12,15,19 from 8:30-3:00. Hope this helps with planning.
Yes, they gave me the April dates for accepted student days when I called but we don’t want to wait that long. We are attending the visit day on February 19 because we want our daughter to see it in the winter to see if she can handle it
Lol, that’s the precise reason we toured on January 8. I told my D24 that if she liked Syracuse at it’s worst, then she’d love it at it’s best. She loved it during our cold visit!
The common data set for '23-'24 has been released. Some of us speculated about the admissions rates in last year’s thread:
19,990 were admitted out of the 46,357 who applied, for a 43% acceptance rate. That is a 9% decrease from the previous year. 4058 enrolled, meaning the yield held steady at ~20%.
5933 students accepted a spot on the waitlist, and 1647 of those were offered admission off the waitlist, for a rate of 28%.
For ED: 2182 applied and 1439 were accepted, for a 66% acceptance rate. ~1/3 of the incoming class was accepted ED. The ED and RD acceptance rates didn’t differ much the previous year, so this is a pretty big change from that.
The acceptance rate has mostly fluctuated +/- 5 points around 50% in the last decade. There was a huge spike up to 69% for '20-'21 and then 59% for '21-'22 presumably due to covid. It came back down to 52% last year.
Some websites are still showing an overall admit rate of 59%. And the admit rate for some majors is a lot lower than others. So if an applicant is looking at old data and applying to a more selective major, they may not be categorizing their chances accurately. I will be curious to see if the acceptance rates continue to decrease, or if they fluctuate around 50% like they have in the past.
Thanks for highlighting. Has anyone seen data for Syracuse by college/school ? My understanding is Newhouse has the lowest acceptance rate, followed by Whitman, Maxwell, engineering, and architecture - in some order. Just curious how these compare to the university average - I get the sense there is a wide range among the programs.
Do they release RD decisions in waves ?
I’ve seen this data from Poets & Quants on Whitman acceptance rate (46% in 2022 and 31.5% in 2023). I agree that Newhouse would be lower but not sure where the others would land. Based on ranking/rep, I’d expect Architecture to be a tough get.
Last year it was in waves. Hopefully atarting Friday March 15. Last year most of the acceptances came first, then rejections and waitlists in early April.
Any “tells” from previous years to help us gauge when they may start releasing decisions? Any portal astrology? Im assuming possible March 15 or March 22 decision ….seems reasonable based on past threads but any inside info or tips appreciated! It’s my top choice for D, she keeps changing her mind
No, the portal was totally static last year. The big release day was March 24th, and they were pretty tight-lipped about everything up until then. We were at a different school’s accepted student day when he got the notice and weren’t necessarily expecting a decision that day. Our kid only applied RD to one other school which let him know weeks earlier. So this was by far the last decision to come in (and was his best merit award). So I think at least another month. Crossing fingers for your daughter!
My son was accepted ED 2 and March 22nd is the admitted ED student date
Some RD acceptances today. Daughter saw two bio and one Econ major on zeemee. So maybe they are starting. They sent those people an email.
