Syracuse Class of 2028 Official Thread

Syracuse is a need-aware school. Do you think that student did not require as much financial aid than your son?

I was coming to ask the same thing!

Son did not hear yesterday. Bad sign? Who knows! I wonder when next batch of things will go out? Is it typically only on Fridays that they will announce? Last school he is waiting on and I’m not very hopeful after reading how much demonstrated interest weighs on things. We went last summer for a tour, did an online info session, and met with rep at National Portfolio Day (hoping to major in illustration) but that is it.

How much more interest do you need to demonstrate? Honestly asking for d27 who is interested in architecture and want to be prepared to give her the best chance of getting in. Praying for good news for your son.

Take the study abroad option. It is becoming more and more the norm between waitlisted and accepted. Northeastern in particular makes heavy use of it. They want your kid, and if they are willing to wait a semester to come to the mothership campus, they will accept her. I had a ton of friends do that with campuses in Australia, England and even on the West Coast campus in Oakland. They all loved it, joined their classmates after Xmas, and had no problems making friends in the dorms and continuing their studies. The biggest portion of the freshman class that drops out, will do so in December, at all colleges. The early study abroad option allows Syracuse to then replace the on campus dropouts in January. It’s a win win for you and the university. Take it, there is no shame, or major disadvantage to it. I know many that accepted the offer, had a nice semester abroad experience, and loved coming to the main campus after Christmas . It’s an early study abroad option, which Syracuse is famous for, and the best option, if your kid wants to be Orange.

I would say you/son showed the requisite DI that typically covers it. The only other thing that sometimes comes up is ā€œare you opening and clicking through the emails they’re sendingā€. They do have ways of tracking such things but I’m not sure how much that really weighs in on an acceptance.

They do separate information sessions for the university (general) and specific program. I’d suggest to anyone to try and do both - even if virtual - to cover bases.

It’s why major why school thing in your supplemental essays. Must be very specific to the school. Taking a campus tour is not sufficient in these days.

Thank you  good to know.

At our first virtual session over six months ago, the admissions director said that SU wants kids who want to be there… They recommended a tour, an interview, and attending some virtual sessions. We did all three, plus my daughter stayed in touch with our local admin rep who spoke at our high school to thank her, ask questions, etc. Book the interview when the email comes as those slots fill up quickly!

I think that’s a fair/reasonable amount of interest. Not hearing last night seems to not have much bearing. We know some excellent students with a great shot who didn’t hear yet either; my understanding is everyone else will hear on the 29th. Good luck; I am a big supporter of all illustrators!! SU has a great illustration program. My favorite college professor was a SU illustration major and she was very skilled, a great teacher, and makes a ton of money now!

Thank you so informative! Love the folks on this forum!

Everything everyone has said about demonstrated interest is 100% accurate. I was accepted with 4 virtual classes, 2 pre college classes, a LOCI from alumni and professors, connection with the Admissions Counselor from the school in which my major is (my former TA is also one of the admissions counselor so keeping in connect with her), visiting campus and taking in person classes, connecting with professors on personal research, and overall putting my best foot forward. If your child is looking at SU, they need to show the admissions team that they want to be there. They are not looking for kids who have perfect GPAs but decided to apply last minute, or think they are applying for a safety. Trust of the matter is that no school is a safety anymore. Syracuse wants the people that have been working with them for over a year to make connections.

So same! CA here but no merit so :weary:

Same here!

Highly agree! My kid is good (but not great) stats but built a relationship, interviewed, toured, attended summer pre colleg, and was selected as pre college ambassador which I’m sure helped.

Is he going to commit?

Working on it now….wisco broke her heart, but I’ve always wanted Cuse …

Also to add for future applicants, Syracuse says they don’t accept additional recs, but my d asked her AO and they accepted an additional rec from her Syracuse pre college professor.

Yep me too!! Professor wrote a rec and emailed it directly to admissions. Same with my alumni rec but my alumni is extremely connected to the university so who knows if that had anything to do with it.

Just another perspective on demonstrated interest. We only did a tour and one LOCI. No interviews and no emails are ever opened! Was accepted RD on Friday above average but not perfect stats.
