That’s interesting. We have no idea if it went to them. There was absolutely no mention of it in the decision.
D got merit scholarship, it was in letter but nothing in my slice. Does it take a couple days?
I don’t know for sure, but I thought maybe MySlice wouldn’t update until they release full financial aid packages.
We’re anxiously awaiting the FA package and are strategizing with our school’s guidance counselor on how to ask for additional merit aid. While excited and thankful for what was offered, it won’t be enough, particularly in comparison to the other school S24 is considering.
It is my understanding that all applicants get that MySlice/Activate your NetID email the day before decisions are released. We got one back on 12/21, the day before ED decisions…not sure why, maybe it was accidental or maybe it was because we submitted our application and CSS profile in early October. Doesn’t sound like most RD people got that email this year which is starting to make sense… There is a little blurb on the SU financial/scholarship pages explaining that the FAFSA delays are causing the MySlice delays; that was my interpretation, anyway… There was a short paragraph on the applicant portal, under the Admissions Acceptance Form link, that says the Office of FA will contact you about aid. Until then, no info will be on MySlice. Any other year, MySlice would have info posted by now.
Hopefully, we get an email or something soon. Like you said, SU is out of reach for many and I imagine Admissions/FA will be bombarded with emails this week asking for more/some merit
wrt Honors: Does anyone know whether you have to be invited to apply to Honors? There was no mention of it in acceptance letter. We’ve read through the website and it sounds like anyone who wants to can apply; will reach out today to them directly, but I thought I’d ask here in case someone already knows the answer.
You must be a leadership scholar or a 1870 scholar to be invited to apply for honors. Students who received those scholarships were emailed about their application to the Renee Crown Honors Program.
I believe you have to be a Leadership Scholar, 1870 Scholar or Coronat Scholar to be invited to Honors.
We have not tried this as my daughter got into a different school and will decline admission at Syracuse. I have heard if you have been offered merit aid elsewhere that is more than what they offered you, that at times they will increase their merit offer. I have not heard about it working if they not offer merit to begin with. It never hurts to contact them and ask.
Who do you contact? AO?
Sorry - thought you started out by saying he was rejected for Architecture and put on WL for MechE. If he didn’t meet thresholds for the school (in general) he would have just been flat out rejected. That didn’t happen so his application would have gone beyond Admissions to the specific programs he applied to and that’s where the decision he got came from. I could definitely be misremembering or misinterpreting though!
Yes, AO as Merit is run through Admissions. A couple of things to consider though…
SU is likely to work with you on the financial offer if you have another offer on the table from a school they would see as equivalent. Be prepared to be asked to provide a copy of that offer.
The merit that’s being offered is not going to stack with any need based aid (may or may not apply to you but for anyone else reading). They are going to see those merit awards as part of the financial aid package to get the student to the SAI.
Our AO is awesome! My daughter sent a thank you email to them over the weekend and they are sending the form without her even asking for it. Sounds like a longshot, but we can try if we want. I will not bother filling out the form until we get our FA package estimate…which according to our AO, will “be out” later this week.
Anyone know if Syracuse is pretty good with meeting, or at least coming somewhat close to demonstrated need? We applied to two other CSS schools and have estimates from them; one was about $10k above our SAI and the other was about $30k over our SAI. I thought I was going to be sick after getting that second package…
Did you try their net price calculator?
I did and the results were not want I wanted/hoped to see
It’s interesting how CSS schools see your need vs. the FAFSA/government.
They are in line with each other except on asset counting. FAFSA does it like the ivies, but Syracuse counts a portion of the value of your principal home as asset when using CSS.
Just wanted to follow up on this so the correct information is on this thread. My kid just heard back from the Renee Crown Honors Program via email. You do not have to be invited to apply for honors; any student who has been admitted to Syracuse is eligible to apply.
My results on different college websites using their Net Price Calculators were all over the place. Ranged from $25K to $80K of what we’d be expected to pay! I’ve stopped trying to figure out what we might get or not get so I am not so patiently waiting for the official FA packages + merit offers to come in. Then I’ll figure out if we need to ask for more money (if possible) or just move on and go with the less expensive school. I really wish FAFSA wasn’t such a cluster-F this year!
Thing is most schools make no claim to meeting need. Some just don’t have any to give. Others focus more on merit.
Looks like the Honors application requires another essay and she can’t recycle one she already has. Doubt this will happen for us…
Thank you for the correction. The wording on the Renee Crown Website isn’t totally clear at times.
