"Just 258 students are enrolled across the 93 programs being cut, Agnew said. "

I’d guess that they have more dept faculty than students in some majors. (And since the only way to term tenured faculty is by closing the department…)

There was some talk about the subject at UT (Austin) v Syracuse for BArch - #29 by jym626 , but it is probably better to continue here instead of in someone’s compare-college-choices thread.

I’m sure the certificate programs and some of the others share faculty with larger programs. You don’t need to hire specialized professors for these online programs…

Interesting article. Thank you for posting.

55 of the 93 programs being eliminated had no students enrolled; the remaining 38 programs enrolled a total of just 258 students (an average of fewer than 7 students per program).

This appears to be a wise move for Syracuse University as the resources devoted to the cancelled programs can be used in a more efficient & relevant manner.

From the article:

No positions or departments have been slated for elimination, she said.

And the university, at least, is saying:

unlike many colleges making cuts, Syracuse is not doing so out of financial necessity, according to Lois Agnew, the university’s provost and chief academic officer.

Some of the surprises for me included the elimination of the majors in computer engineering and electrical engineering, as those are two that I would have thought would be doing relatively well.

https://dailyorange.com/2026/04/results-syracuse-university-academic-portfolio-review/ says that “Two closed programs, the C.E. in computer engineering and the E.E. in electrical engineering at the College of Engineering and Computer Science, are not included in this table. These programs, which are older, dormant programs, have zero enrollees. SU is not closing its B.S. in computer engineering or its B.S. in electrical engineering.”

Thank you. Yes I posted this when it was first announced a month ago. It was on April 1 and at first I thought it was a joke. It wasn’t. https://share.google/07nEghWzxcpXHflIL
