SYTYCD new season

I thought Alex’ solo was terrific…but then when I saw the hip hop with Twitch, OMG. I think we’ve watched it at least 4 times. Last night D and I watched it again and made ourselves watch Twitch, since we previously hadn’t taken our eyes off of Alex.

NappyTabs have redeemed themselves in my eyes now. I thought their work last season was pretty weak.

I thought Kent did a really good job - I think they’re being too hard on him. But I sort of agree about Billy - he’s not showing the level of personality that it would take to win.

DD and I are heavy duty SYTYCD fans. D has always been for Alex but i’ve held back because his technical perfection just felt sort of cold to me. But the Twitch Hip Hop dance has me converted to a full throttle Alex fan.

That said, I do really like Robert. I studied ballet a bit as a “young thing” and my teacher was from the Bolshoi. Robert has a natural and very unusual upper arch in his back, meaning it’s straight and then around the region of the shoulder blades it arches when he wants it to. That’s a really rare thing. Kind of talking Nureyev on that. It makes him look always like a prince no matter what. The big problem is that he’s just not getting the elevation he needs on his jumps. Have no idea what the physics involved with that might be.

Great show!

Me, too, sewhappy! I liked Alex from the start, but after last night, I’m in love! That hip hop routine was amazing!!

I do like Robert’s dancing but I haven’t really warmed up to his personality. He seems kind of goofy. Kent’s adorable but I had to agree with the judges who told him he has to lose the “deer in the headlights” look. I’d love to see him dance a really mature routine.

I didn’t mind seeing Melinda go. I’ve never been a fan of tap dancing and all that waving of arms and stuff. Too corny for me!

I agree with everyone who has gone on about the Alex/Twitch number…just fabulous!!!

I don’t have a huge problem with Melissa going; however, I think that Jose’ should have definitely been in the bottom 3 and if he had been, he would have been gone. And it’s a shame, IMO, how the judges go on and on about how cute Jose’ is and all, but don’t really critique his dancing nor seem to really expect him to improve technically.

Alex was AMAZING last night! D and I have watched the Alex/Twitch over and over again!! Loved it!!!

Glad D and I aren’t the only ones.

I have this idea that Robert thinks he can get votes by being a goofball…that’s a real turnoff to me. He lost me a couple of weeks ago when he pretended to throw up his number…how awkward!

I agree with all of you about Alex – he is truly amazing. I’m not sad to see Melinda go this week…………she probably should have been sent home last week.

I think the judges are hypocritical in their critiques of Jose’ and Kent. They were rather harsh in scolding Kent for flashing his smile and playing to the audience. While they gave Jose’ a pass on his lack of technique and inability to master other genres ……….because he’s cute and has a great smile. At least Kent has shown he can successfully dance a variety of different styles.

I still have hope that Robert will figure out his persona and get some lift to his jumps. He is such a natural prince if he can just get comfortable with it and stop the goofing.

Alex is just crazy. All the boys are terrific, including Jose. DD and I agree with the judges - he just has something when he performs.

Oh, and I for one really enjoy seeing the all stars perform again.

I’m SO disappointed for Alex! Hoping that he’s able to return but if he has a ruptured Achilles tendon, he’s out. I can just imagine how awesome his Bollywood routine would have been.

Props to Cat for speaking up to the judges last night about their double standard in judging Jose vs. Adechike. She said what everyone was thinking and I hope Nigel takes it to heart. He’s a nasty little man when he wants to be.

I agree with everything you said, Patsmom. I’ve never voted, but last night I voted for Adechike.

I was also glad that Cat spoke up. I wonder if she will take flak for that from the judges?

I voted for everyone BUT Jose last night.

My daughter and I just can’t understand why the judges are so harsh with Adechike. He’s a gorgeous man and terrific dancer. He is the most masculine presence, imo, except perhaps Robert. Personally, I don’t respond too well to Billy who has great extensions and flexibility but just never owns the stage the way the male dancer should.

So sad for Alex.

I read an article that said Alex’ injury is like David Beckham’s that kept him out for 6 months. I so hope that isn’t true!

Yes, so sad for Alex–and for us, too! I wish they could change the rules so that a season-ending injury would give you an automatic pass for the next season’s show.

I can’t wait for tonight’s show. It will be interesting to see if there are any comments about what Cat said last night.

I was curious and jumped over to Fox’s SYTYCD board, and many there are saying they think that the comments last night about AdeChicke’s Bollywood number being more “African” were racist comments. I don’t think that at all. I think their comments were in reference to the fact that he was moving his upper body/head more than he should have been doing for the Indian style, which made it look more like the African style of dance. It was a valid technical observation, but unfortunately came off sounding “racist” since it was regarding AdeChicke’s performance.

What did you all think?

I applaud Cat for speaking up about the double standard. Jose is adorable & his smile lights up the room , but that doesn’t make him a good dancer. The judges very clearly have their favorites & Adechike isn’t one of them. They went out of their way to stand up for Robert & refute the misconceptions the public seems to have of him because he’s one of their favorites & they don’t want to see him in the bottom 3 again.

As for Adechike’s performance, the judges also didn’t seem to account for the fact that his partner was injured & he had a different partner than he had rehearsed with. He also had to perform the same movements that led to Alex’s injury. Not being a dancer, I don’t know how that might have affected him.

i love Mia’s choreography but last night i was upset with her comments (and those of the other judges) re Adechike… they seem to be really hard on him each week, yet i really like his performances. When Mia said I really miss Alex right now…i think that was spiteful. I also applaud Cat…someone needed to say that.

I too applaud Cat for pointing out the double standard the judges apply when it comes to Jose’. Last week they criticized Kent for charming the audience while praising Jose’ for having a “special connection w/ the audience”. This week it was Adechike that the judging seemed unfairly harsh….especially Mia Michaels. Nigel was actually positive in his comments about Adechike’s first dance and sparred with Mia in Adechike’s defense. Nigel’s comments about the Bollywood dance were mildly negative, but Mia was down right cruel.

I am just sick about Alex and I agree with you, SportsMama. I hope if Alex can’t return this season, he is automatically a contestant next season.

Just loved Kent’s two performances last night, IMO he gets better every week. :)

As AdeChike stood there awaiting comments, Mia told him she wished she could have seen Alex dance. This was almost as rude and mean as last week when she and Adam told Melinda they thought they sent home the wrong dancer the previous week.

I always liked SYTYCD, but this season is a huge disappointment. Mary Murphy gave me headaches with her screaming and hot tamale train, but at least she provided more objective and constructive criticism, and her expertise/insight on the finer points of different types of ballroom dance was appreciated. Lil’ C was spacey, but he knew hip-hop and krumping. In contrast, this year it seems like all three judges are coming from a contemporary dance background and their comments are much more subjective and dependent upon whether they “like” that particular dancer.

This new format also has limited the interaction between the contestants, which has skewed the way the audience gets to know the contestants. Kent and Lauren’s dance last night was breath-taking on many levels, one being that it was the first time we saw the contestants dancing with each other.

I also thought it was interesting that the only real criticism/feedback Jose has received so far this season came after Cat called the judges on their double-standard of letting Jose do his own version of dances while nit-picking other dancers who were also dancing outside the genre in which they had expertise.

(In light of Alex’s injury, I think the rest of the dancers should perform a group routine to “What I Did for Love” from A Chorus Line.)

I also say “yah, for Cat” for standing up for Adechike. I thought the series of jumps he did at the end of the Bollywood number were amazing.
It was so rude of Mia to say she was really missing Alex.

I’m not really impressed with Jose and can’t see why the judges keep backing him so much.

I loved Kent and Laurens’ dance.
