SYTYCD new season

It’s time for Jose to go home…unless Ashley is too hurt to stay. I don’t think she was even in the house last night-at least I didn’t ever see her on camera. Did anyone? Thing is, I didn’t find myself wishing she was dancing (and I am still wishing Alex was dancing.)

I wasn’t too impressed with last night’s show. I don’t know why, I just didn’t get that feeling of “wow.” It may be that I don’t have that connection with any of the remaining dancers like I have in the past. :(

I liked Travis’ routine and I agree with tarheel’s post#97. I just think the illness/cancer/addiction theme has been overdone, which tends to dilute the impact (at least for me).

I did crack up when Nigel mentioned something about Mia not getting hate mail this week. Haha.

Btw, has anyone heard anything about Mary Murphy? I thought she was supposed to be choreographing in lieu of judging this season. It was evident last night that they need a ballroom expert on there. Mia was trying to make some kind of comment about something out of her area and just didn’t have the expertise.

I agree, too. Maybe it’s fair if each contestant gets one of those “powerful” dances at least once. But for one constestant to have a dance that folks will remember for a long time and others to have some meaningless little jazz or ballroom…not really fair.

missypie, I also missed Alex last night. I pray he makes a full recovery. He is such a gifted dancer.

When I saw Kent in that baseball costume, then heard that it was a Tyce number, I was very afraid. But it ended up being great. And I agreed that Kent did outdance his all star partner.

But I hated it when Nigel told Kent that with Alex gone, he might just win. First, he might have won even with Alex there (the best dancer certainly doen’t always win). Second, I think that statements like that energize the fans of the other dancers.

I have to agree that last night was one of the best nights of dance I have every seen and that includes ones I’ve been to in person. There really are some tremendously taleted dancers on the show this season. I was sorry to hear about Ashley being hurt and I must agree that I think they are pushing the envelope this season with the difficulty of the choreography.

Right now I really love both Lauren and Kent. Jose has never been one of my favorites so I would not be sad if he went home.

I know that Mary Murphy was on Broadway for awhile in Burn the Floor ( I think that’s what the dance show was called?) and I think she may be touring with the show now and that’s why she is not there. I’m not sure about this, but I thought that’s what I heard.

I think that the dances Billy got last night served him well, although they were too similar. It is fun to just watch him dance. Sometimes I think there are too many tricks and too little just plain dancing.

Lauren and Kent are my favorites, too. I really want a girl to win this season just because they are disappearing so quickly.

Lauren and Kent are my favorites as well. And that Tahitian dance was amazing. Such a different style and she did it in so little time!! I cannot even conceive of being able to move your hips like that for so long without years of training in that specific style.

And the Broadway piece that Kent and Neil did was pure joy.

But I agree with the prior comments about the judges not really being able to judge the Tahitian dance. They claim to know Bollywood -which I don’t really believe they are all that expert in - but there could have been 20 things wrong with the style on the Tahitian and the judges wouldn’t have known. (Me neither but it was fun to watch.)

When they decide to throw in a dance like that, couldn’t they have a guest judge to comment - not to really judge on the result show, but just to make intelligent comments so the dancers and audience could learn something?

Do you suppose perhaps when it comes to these unusual dances, the choreographer might tip off the judges as to who did well and who didn’t? I think there is much that goes on behind the scenes that we don’t know about. The judges seem to have opinions about who works hard and who has a good attitude, and that has to come from either the choreographers or the All Stars.

Still preferring the old format, without All Stars.

I love the new format now that the dancers are dancing both with the allstars and with other dancers. I also enjoy getting to see pairings other than boy/girl. It’s a shame there is now only one girl, though.

Oh, and did anyone notice that Jose’ was not even in the opening piece? He just came on at the very end. He definitely could not have done that choreography. I don’t think I have ever seen them just not include one of the contestants in an opening number before. But, as my daughter the dancer pointed out, they are getting pieces ready for the tour, and he just won’t be in that one. It was awesome, though!

I honestly thought for a moment that Jose had been injured too and couldn’t dance. Then I saw him come on at the end and realized that his skills were just too limited for the routine (Dom was in the routine, which is unusual for an all-star right?). It took watching his solo tonight to realized how his b-boy skills pale in comparison to Dom and Legacy, for me anyways. On another note, I was excited to hear that they will be including season six dancers on the tour! I really hope Noelle gets to go.

The opening included many, if not all, of the “allstars” plus the remaining contestants (minus Jose). And, I agree, even Jose’s “b-Boy” skills are not that great compared to Dom’s . My family and I thought that was also pretty obvious in that duet they did on Wed, but the judges never said anything about that. I just don’t get their preferential treatment of him! Yes, he has a cute puppydog face and all, but sheesh!

Jose really needs to go. His skills are so inferior to the other dancers. I am getting annoyed that they ‘dumb down’ the dances for him. His Broadway number tihs week was painful.

^^^Agree!!

I agree with all of the comments made up stream about this week’s show. The show was amazing! I still miss Alex and hope his recovery goes well. So sorry to learn of Ashley’s injury ………… someone needs to make sure the dancers are properly warmed up and evaluate the choreography assigned to each dancer. I didn’t hear Nigel say to Ashley that she has a spot next season. He said she would be part of the tour.

My favorite dance was the Mandy Moore number ……… great choreography and well danced. Like misspypie, I too like to see dancing without an over abundance of tricks.

Jose’ was lucky this week, again! I’m curious to see if the judges will continue to prop him up.

IMO, Nigel’s comment to Kent about Alex’s departure, was silly and uncalled for.

Billy is a good dancer but for some reason I just can’t warm to him. Kent is now my favorite, but Robert and Lauren are a close 2nd.

Who were the kids (little ballroom dancers) on last night’s show? Did they win some contest that let them perform on SYTYCD?

“Elimination by attrition” has been unfortunate this season. I agree with other posters about Jose. His ability to dance other styles hasn’t really improved & it’s time for him to go.

I may be wrong, but I think theyoung dancers were students of Mary Murphey.

Glad other people didn’t see Jose until the end of the opening number…we kept saying “Where’s Jose?” and when we saw him at the end, thought that maybe we had just overlooked him. Yes, he can do what others can’t do, but they sure haven’t felt bad cutting tappers who could do what the others couldn’t do.

But I still think Jose will go next week (barring other injuries…) Then…I’m starting to think Adechike (sp) will be in the top 4 instead of Billy. I LOVE to watch Billy dance, but of course, I haven’t voted once. Since the judges have already come off as racist with the too African for Bollywood comment, I can see them saying that Adechicke has grown more than Billy.

Kent has grown a lot, and he may be mugging for the audience sometimes, but he plays no games with the judges…is there in earnest concentration when they talk to him. I am curious about his training, not so easily come by in rural Illinois.

Interesting that Anya was in two dances last night…she seems to be the designated “let’s see if we can make men out of these lads” partner.

When Jose did his first dance two weeks ago without a shirt, it was obvious that he lacks a lot of strength and dancer poise…his arms looked weak.

Some of the support for various dancers is perhaps cultural, but no idea what the demographics might be of the viewing and voting audience. The live audience looks to be mostly young women. There is no way of knowing about the voters…the old zipcode approach to demographics does not work with cell phones.

I bet the voting audience is, too. I think that is Billy’s problem - he just seems too darned effeminate…lots of the guys are probably gay, but they just need to be able to look manly when they’re dancing, or at least manly to a 16 year old. Billy just can’t. He needs one of those Important Contemporaries to get him into the top 4.
