SYTYCD new season

I think overall Robert owned the night. The contemporary piece with the girl heading to war was well done and then he just really shined in the bollywood piece. I’ve always really liked Robert and think he’s showing a lot of endurance and adaptability through the season.

Kent got the usual ga-ga love affair from the judges. Yes, he’s channeling Gene Kelly in a really crazy surreal way and I guess that’s terrific but his personality annoys both my daughter and me.

The duet with Ade and Billy was superb. Who was that choreographer? She’s a real talent. And the two men were perfect. My daughter watched that piece over and over again last night, kept seeing more in it with each viewing. That’s good choreography and dancing.

Worried for Lauren. Shame on the show for setting up these young dancers for injuries.

The whole Jose thing is nonsensical. He should probably give acting a try? Fabulous bone structure, photogenic. Just not a dancer. Not at all.

Liked the new judge from ballroom background. She didn’t go on and on but she made her points well.

SYTYCD remains our favorite show!

I can’t believe Nigel didn’t notice that Jose wasn’t in the two opening numbers…are the judges watching them at all? If we all notice instantly, why didn’t Nigel, from up close? And could Jose really have done his other dances with a groin injury?

I don’t like the ballroom judge…LOL, the fact that her hair is the exact same color as her skin annoys me.

Billy and Ade’s dance was terrific and really the only memorable dance of the evening.

I so wanted to love the Broadway with the two ladies, but I thought the choreography was weak.

As soon as the choreographer said her dance was about someone going off to war, I TOTALLY called that it would be Kathryn going…I mean, she’s a beast and Robert, well…

Speaking of Robert…he…and Billy…in sequined blouses…WAY too girlie!

We still adore Kent. Love the Gene Kelly reference because he’s my fav ever.

Adechike needs to join one of those all male dance troupes where they do amazing athletic things. One of the judges said he’s like a little spring…he totally is…such power.

I really like SYTYCD, but every season it seems more and more staged. Jose’ magically gets another dance in his genre; while the others have to step out of their genre and do Bollywood, Ballroom, and the like. Nigel didn’t know Jose’ hasn’t been in the opening dances (for weeks) and he is the executive producer??? Oh, Please!

Billy did well last night but he had an extra week of rest. I feel terrible for Lauren; I hope she is able to complete the season. Still think the judges are blind to Jose and go out of their way to find positive things to say. No matter who he is partnered with his choreography is always basic and far less intricate.

I agree Robert had a great night but Kent’s solo was amazing.

Question: Do you think there is some hanky-panky in deciding who is in the bottom 3? If Jose’, Billy, and Robert are really in the bottom 3, while AdeChike is a few thousand votes ahead. Do you think the producers would pull Billy out of the bottom 3 and put AdeChike in?

“The whole Jose thing is nonsensical. He should probably give acting a try? Fabulous bone structure, photogenic.” Really? Personally I find him hard to look at, dont know what it is…Apparently I dont have the eye…

Well, I got tour tickets but the seats aren’t very good. I think the presale code everywhere is dance2010. I got in a 10:02 am (tried Dance2010 first) and by then, the “best seats available” were halfway up the uppper deck. Oh well, D should still be happy.

This season has been kind of a train wreck-new judge, new format, multiple dancers missing performances because of injuries (real and otherwise), and an executive producer who has another show (American Idol) on his mind.

I love, love, love this show, but some changes need to be made.

I don’t like Mia Michaels as a judge.

I didn’t like the guest judge last night.

I like seeing the all stars, but am thinking they need to tweak what they are doing if they keep this format.

They need to be fair to all of the dancers. (I’m sorry, but Jose’s routines are so watered down–and has he ever had to do a ballroom number? Can’t remember. I even like the guy, but it bothers me.)

I’m not a big fan of Billy, but he (and Ade) did a great job last night.

I wondered about Lauren after her last number. The judges hadn’t even started their comments and Lauren looked like she was about to cry. I hope she will be ok.

“I really like SYTYCD, but every season it seems more and more staged.
TutuTaxi, I agree!

My 14 year old D gets so mad when she thinks it’s rigged.

It’s exciting for the viewers to see the dancers in three dances in one night, but that can’t be healthy. I know that dancers on Broadway do 8 shows a week, with multiple numbers in each show, but almost none of the numbers are as taxing as the dances the SYTYCD contestants are asked to do.

As for Jose, they need to have Piers Morgan be a judge. He’s the British judge on America’s Got Talent…he’s always the one who is able to criticize the adorable little kid acts.

I read online today that Lauren was dehydrated and possibly had a concussion (??) - apparently her father posted on Facebook. It wasn’t clear whether the concussion was something that happened in rehearsal or during the performance. I suppose with all those lifts and drops that she could have hit her head. I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often, frankly!

I agree that Mia is a lousy judge. I didn’t like Mary Murphy’s shreiking, but at least she was kind.

Missed the show last night so I’m catching up via these posts. How did it become known/discussed re: Jose missing the opening numbers? What was the context?

^^^After Jose’ first performance of the evening – Nigel ended his critique by saying he was unaware that Jose’ had not been in the opening dances and asked Jose’ if that was because of his (never before mentioned) groin injury. Jose’ seemed surprised or confused but nodded in the affirmative.

Ah, thanks… Now I don’t have to wait until the full episode is available. My curiosity was nagging at me.

jasmom, tons of people on SYTYCD online forums did notice and posted and emailed the show. People were speculating that Jose could not handle the choreography and the big issue is why the judges give him a pass and compliment his smile whereas other dances get grilled and Kent gets told to stop with the smiling face.

It was interpreted, generally, as favourtism toward Jose and a many people are unimpressed with his dancing. Last night the judges did better, pointing out what a great job he did, given his simpler choreography and lower level of training or experience.

Previously the judges did not balance their compliments by mentioning the other items and it offended many dance people who post online.

After the postings here, I Googled it and read a bit.

I just read that Nigel tweeted that Lauren will be in the studio tonight, but won’t dance in the opening number or at all, unless she is in the bottom three.

Glad to know she is going to be okay!

I really have trouble watching the contestants that dance with Kathryn. She is just so fantastic that I can’t watch anybody else.

I know I’m being picky and overly critical but I don’t like the format of the Thursday night show. There isn’t enough time allocated for the 3 solos. Why can’t Cat have each dancer step up; present a recap of the previous night’s performance with appropriate film clips and then announce the bottom 3 contestants. IMO, too much time is wasted with the current format.

LOL, TutuTaxi, reality TV would be much different if you were in charge! What would we all do without the continuous before commerical cliff hangers?

I really can’t decide between Robert, Kent, and Lauren who should win, but I’d really like to see a woman win this year. About Billy, I watch to see if he’ll do something brilliant. Most of the time he’s OK and I’m disappointed. But last night was amazing. The other three I mentioned are stronger and more versatile, but I’m not sure they can be brilliant.

I don’t care for Robert’s dancing (don’t care for his personality either, but I’m trying to put that aside), and I 'm having a hard time figuring out why. Maybe it’s his proportions? Long in the torso and not enough length in the leg? Or maybe not–it’s gut reaction that’s hard to describe.

Have there been any waltzes this year? I can’t recall any, and miss them.

Now that we’re nearing the end of the season I still think this format was a failure. When there are contestant-All Star pairings, I end up watching the All-Stars rather than the contestants a good deal of the time, because a lot of them are just better dancers. Not eliminating one female and one male each week has led to this male-skewed group that puts a lot of limits on the choreography when the contestants are dancing with one another. I also still miss hearing Mary’s critiques, as well as laughing at her antics, and can’t bear Mia. So basically I’m kind of cranky.

As much as I love to see my favorite all-stars, I think that the new format has essentially killed standard ballroom dancing on the show. It has taken a backseat, mostly because Pasha and Anya are predominantly latin dancers. I also really miss the two regular judges (Nigel and Mary) with a third rotating judge. It brought new perspectives each week and made the overall effect more refreshing. I roll my eyes with every Adam Shankman over-exaggeration. I did love Toni Redpath on the show last night as it finally gave the show a much-needed expert opinion on ballroom this season. Robert’s dancing is not my problem with him; he just comes off to me as a giant, overly-dramatic ham with his constant camera-mugging. In fact, he is a fantastic dancer, but I much prefer Lauren, Kent, and even Adechike.
