SYTYCD Season 10

musicmom, if you subscribe to the thread, you’ll always be able to find it. :)

abasket, it is weird, especially since last year’s winner Eliana was a ballerina.

My early favorites are Jenna the ballroomer (I’m not especially a ballroom fan, but she was just on fire), Amy the contemporary, and Mackenzie the contemporary. During auditions, I loved Malece, but now she seems a little dazed. If she gets past that, though, she should last for a while. None of the guys stand out for me.

MommaJ, I think their ratings took a serious hit beginning last year, when they went to the one-night format.

There were a lot of good dancers tonight. It is always hard from me when there are so many contestants. It seems to get easier after a few weeks when the field has been pared down. They said two will go home, so I assume that means one boy and one girl. I think the first girl who danced may be in trouble. She was very heavy and clunky, I thought. Not sure about the guys.

Loved the opening number! Best part of the show.

I wish the choreographers didn’t feel (or weren’t told) that every dance has to have a story. The one supposedly about a review that panned one of the performers was particularly ridiculous. It’s hard to shoehorn a bunch of narrative into a three minute routine, and while there have been some great efforts over the years, a lot of them fall flat. Why can’t it be okay just to craft a beautiful dance? (I’m waiting for this one: “She’s disappointed with her SAT score; he’s the guidance counselor who introduces her to the perfect test optional school. She rejects the place at first because it’s too fratty, but he convinces her that she’ll find her niche there and helps her pick out a laptop and extra long sheets.” )

I didn’t love the opening Jive (Mariah and Carlos) or the mid-program hip-hop (Nico and Alexis) routines, but thought everyone else was solid.

Liked both Jasmines, especially Jasmine M.'s blindfold dance.

Really liked Curtis and Hayley’s routine.

Blueprint was really a complete surprise.

Fik-Shun and Amy… wow! Front-runners!!

My favorite number (besides the opener) was the African jazz with Brittany and Blu Print. I also liked the Broadway number and the blindfold number. Cutest couple: Amy and Fik-Sun.

I missed the first few routines. By the time I tuned in it was Malece dancing and I thought she was quite good. I also liked Brittany but Amy was amy-zing and amy-favorite. Last week, I liked Makenzie but this week IDK. The girl tap dancer and her partner may be in the bottom 2 because their hip hop routine seemed out of sync and meh. As for the men, I liked Bluprint, Fik-shun and Curtis.

Who was that girl dancing with Nigel and Adam? My H said it was Cat. I thought the girl looked like the actress from 2 Broke Girls.

Our Fox station cut to commercials right before the blindfold number and cut back to SYTYCD just as they were ending the number :(. I read online that it happened to many others, too. Some people said it happened during a different number nearer to the end of the show. I wonder if that’s going to affect the voting and whether they’ll take it into consideration.

I really loved that opening group number - very cleverly done!

SERIOUSLY??? I’d be all over calling to complain about that!! That is just ridiculous!

I had to watch that opening a couple of times…it was so great!

This season is going to be a fantastic one, for sure.

^^^^MommaJ: YES!!! Or student gets rejected from an Ivy, attends state flagship and becomes POTUS (to the tune of “God bless the USA”)

I actually thought both hip hop routines were less than inspired, and didn’t understand the judges’ love for the second one. I thought she looked terrified through the whole thing. Loved Fikshun and Amy, and Malece/Jade and the blindfold dance.

Just curious cause I have no idea - what makes Wayne Brady qualified to be a SYTYCD judge? Nothing against him - does he have a dance background???

abasket, the guest judge is usually there because they’re promoting something, not because they have any particular dance expertise. Although Wayne did toss in a few terms like “lines” and “extension,” so he might.

As a tapmom, I was so excited about Alexis, but I was really disappointed in her number. It was by far the most lackluster of the night. I can’t even imagine her doing a waltz.

Last night was boring. I only liked Makenzie and Amy.

And I thought they sent the wrong two home.
Agree with Nygel, though, that the cha-cha didn’t have much cha-cha in it.

I agree with you musicmom.

I’m still having a hard time keeping all the long-haired brunette dancers straight. I still don’t like the one-day format and wasn’t excited by yesterday’s performances.

No one likes the one-day format except the programming geniuses at Fox, but they’re trying to make it work. It is exceedingly awkward to have eliminations at the beginning, and then the eliminated dancers having to perform. It was awkward last year, when they had eliminations at the end of the show based on the previous week’s voting. I’ve heard viewership is way down this year, and last year was way down from the year before. I’m sorry to say it, but we may be watching the final season. :(

I can’t for the life of me think why they kept Mariah and sent Brittany home. On the upside, Christina Applegate is one of my favorite guest judges; she knows dance.

Nigel kept saying they were looking for dancers that could grow, plus he spoke w the choreographers and reviewed prior work. Sounds like they will cut people who have hit their limit and maybe cut some slack to people who are pushing themselves. They might be trying to weed out ‘bad attitudes’. I’ve never read if that has been an issues, but I can imagine one bad attitude spoiling everyone else’s fun.

What did everyone think about last night’s show?

I hate it that Jade got injured and had to step out…

Enjoyed pretty much all the dances last night. To me the dancers that stand out are Amy and the blonde with the short hair…

I bet Malese (the blonde with short hair) was thrilled to get to dance with Marko. Jade is no comparison to him, although I am sorry that he was injured and had to drop out. That has to be disappointing for him.

I thought Haley did a great job in the salsa (green costume with fringe). I hadn’t really noticed her before, but while watching her dance, I thought she was one of the ballroom girls.

I am finding Tucker intriguing and I don’t know why. He is not very attractive, but he has a little bit of a theatrical quality that catches my attention. Usually I just watch the girls because they seem to get to do more in the choreography.
