SYTYCD Season 9

I like that some of the dancers aren’t skinny girls…last year’s winner certainly didn’t have a ballerina body.

Except for ballerinas, dancers aren’t usually anorexic looking because it’s so athletic.

Right…but because in the past, ballet got all the press, people got the idea that dance = eating disorders, etc.

Because of the way they’ve designed this season, it’s much harder for me to get invested in these dancers.

My daughter said that Janelle looks exactly like The Little Mermaid (besides the hair color) and now I can’t NOT see Ariel in her face-- not many people look like an animated princess as drawn. Now I can’t take my eyes off her dancing AND I think of Ariel, lol.

I have to say I am having a hard time with the new format… Especially since there are so many fabulous dancers this year… kind of disappointed so far!

It bothers me that people are criticizing the color of Amelia’s skin and “cankles,” versus her dancing. She’s not my favorite dancer, but wouldn’t we all be outraged if someone was criticizing the color of the skin of a dancer who was a member of a minority population group? “Spray-tan orange” is not a skin color that caucasian dancers should be required to artifically acquire.

Yes true but the comment was really about her teeth. Yes it’s kind of mean. She’s a great dancer and also has gotten some lucky breaks by getting a highly popular partner and no boring choreography yet.

It’s hard to care about any of them though because the whole thing is so rushed.

Hey— it’s reality TV. I’m sure no one is ever shallow and/or catty. Or maybe just me, lol. Her lines are distracting to me, I gotta be honest. Eliana and [one of the other girls–Audrey?] have amazing lines and great feet. Amelia’s feet/toe point isn’t great and that does distract me. If they were better I maybe wouldn’t notice her ankles so much.

I’m sure you didn’t mean to imply that ballet isn’t athletic. :)

I try not to judge everyone on their looks, but I do think the stylists toned down Amber’s hair, which is good because I could hardly watch her dance. Her original shade was distracting. In the winter, I have skin as light as Amelia, so that doesn’t bother me, and I think she plays up the pale skin for a “look” a la silent film star.

So, what did everyone think about last night?

They did mention how Amelia stays pale last night.

I was fine with who went home.

I thought the Matt and Audrey salsa was one of the over all worst dances I’ve seen in a long time. I hope they don’t ask that choreographer back. First, the song was TERRIBLE. How can you “get into” doing salsa to Beethoven’s 5th? The choreography was slow and clunky. And poor Matt looked like an Elvis impersonator in the red jumpsuit.

NappyTabs deserve an Emmy for choreographing that number for Cyrus and Eliana…don’t know how many rabbits they can pull out of the hat for that pair. Please please have the couples broken up when they return in August!

las ma - of course ballerina’s are athletic. They are the ones with the bad rep at anorexia since it’s helpful to be so light in ballet to be lifted and be so angelic/fairy like in so many classical ballet’s.

I can never keep track of who is partnered with whom at elimination. Were the two let go last night partners?

I think next week the ones who did ballroom will be in trouble. I feel bad for Eliana being stuck with Cyrus - I’m sure she’s being hindered by having to have the choreography changed so he can keep up.

I thought Mia Michaels was going to choreograph this year.

BTW… anyone see Travis Walls new show?

I was a little disappointed about who went home only because I had loved the earlier routine.

Remember when they used to show the couple pulling choreography out of a hat (so only one group would do hip hop)? If they would bring that back, Cyrus may be walking out the door.

Christina said last night that Cyrus was incredibly lucky drawing that routine…right…like the dance with the robot and ballerina was random and another couple might have done it?

I like and dislike the new format. It gives dancers one extra chance to dance on tv, but a great performance will not save them if their previous week’s performance was not so good. That would be fine, all things being equal. It seems as though a lot depends on the style of dance “chosen,” the choreographer, the music, and who your partner is.

I’d like to know how this whole thing works. They mentioned last week the kinds of dances left when Cyrus and his partner had to choose. Is the order in which they choose randomly selected? If you were last to choose this week, do you get to go first next week?

I thought Amber and Brandon did a great job last night. They seemed to have great chemistry. Both had partners that were voted off last week. What if Amber and Brandon had been paired up from the beginning? I guess it’s ok if it’s “the luck of the draw,” but I wonder how much is set up by the producers. Hmmm . . .

Now that we’ve had a chance to see a “normal” episode (no movie promotion sucking up a chunk of time, only two dancers eliminated), I’m convinced that the new format has depleted the show of much of it’s magic and thrown off its balance. The eliminations at the end are anti-climactic, and I for one barely remember the dances from the prior week that put people into the bottom six. (Imagine how much worse that will be when the show has been off the air for two weeks!) There’s a lingering sense of unfairness and arbitrariness when a couple that just had a great performance is sent home. Having only some of the bottom six dance for their lives makes no sense–the non-dancers are apparently the judges’ favorites, so any suspense is lost. Basically, they broke my show.

Would be so crazy to have the couples switch each week? It seems unfair to the ones who have to switch due to losing partners. I felt bad that Cyrus’s partner ended up in the bottom 3 when with a different guy she might have been fine.

I agree, it is time for the dancers to start switching. Maybe when they get to 10 dancers. I loved the first couple of seasons when guys got to be partnered. It made for some interesting choreography (Russian dance, anyone?)

Has anyone heard if the all stars (dancers from former seasons) will be a part of this season?
