My advice would be that your daughter should go where she is valued and loved! Best of luck! It sounds like it will work out well!
And where the school is a good fit for your daughter. What she is looking for in a school, without out the sport.
I was thinking some more about your specific question whether your D should do more pre-reads for additional schools that have requested them. Honestly, IMHO, yes; for at least some of them. We had no set amount or limit, or even really thought about that. Assuming some of those schools are schools she would even remotely consider, then yes, she should submit for pre-read. If none of those schools are schools your D would ever consider (in other words, sheâd rather go elsewhere if need be and not compete in her sport than go there) then no. Our D got asked for several pre-reads at schools that werenât even on her radar. It was surprising, actually. For a couple of them, she respectfully said no thanks, it wasnât the right fit, because she knew she would absolutely never go there. For a couple, she said yes, with our gentle encouragement. They were not remotely near the top of any list of hers, and odds are, she wouldnât end up attending, but yet she couldnât definitively rule it out, because until the student is committed, many different, unexpected scenarios can occur.
We found the recruiting path, especially as it narrowed down towards the end, to have unexpected twists and turns and we suggested to our D that it was in her best interest to have as many viable options as possible.
Remember too, she may not pass every pre-read, and many pre-reads donât result in offers. Itâs unlikely that 8-10 pre-reads are going to result in 8-10 offers, and she may not get offers from the few she thinks sheâd be happy at. We just tried to be as practical and realistic as possible, while helping D end up with choices.
Thank you. Helpful advice!
Question on D1 / non Ivy pre reads- Do you think a pre read at a power 5 conference school is yes or no irrespective of where the athelete is on the coaches list? So if the coach says this kid is in my top band a pre read at school X be yes where if the athlete is in a lower priority band the answer of the pre read could be no from the same school? I am curious how that works
What schools are you asking about and have the coaches there indicated that a pre-read is part of the recruiting process? Itâs not at most P5 schools, at least not in the same way it functions at Ivies.
Duke and UNC indicated that it is part of the process. Is it your experience that is not the case. The coaches used the words pre read
Thanks, knowing the schools is helpful in replying. For those schools I donât think the pre read results are affected by your place on the coachâs list. My experience is a few years old though, and not with athletically or academically marginal recruits.
The coaches should have a good idea of whether the pre read will be an issue.
We had a friend go through recruiting with Duke last year. After submitting academic info, the athlete had to make a schedule change to their senior year classes adding in another AP class to show more rigor.
We know someone (impact player) who had the same happen for Stanford.
Stanford also recommended a class addition for our daughter when she was in initial talks with the coach - she made the class addition (higher level comp sci - even though she was not majoring in comp sci, had an intro comp sci course completed on her transcript and was part of the Girls Who Code group at her HS too). She ended up not moving forward with the school when she fell in love with another school and team and still ended up happy she took the next level comp sci and enjoyed the class. She is a liberal arts kid - so better school fit elsewhere, but good exposure and understanding to basic comp sci.
