To answer the earlier question, a normal day for me is two one hour walks daily, minimum 10,000 steps, but usually more in my fitbit.
@abasket - Thank you for starting this thread. I have a standing date to walk with a friend on Saturday and Sunday, about 3.5 miles each morning. On the weekdays, we usually try to do at least two nights, about 45 minutes per night. This thread has inspired me to make a concerted effort to get out and walk every day, whether I have a partner or not. We’ve each found it’s just too easy to skip if the other person can’t make it for some reason.
@oldmom4896: I remember how wonderful it was to live in Manhattan and walk to anything that was 20 blocks or fewer – and even occasionally more, depending on how much time I had. I was proud that I knew which block all the stores were on up and down Broadway and Columbus. Great exercise.
The 'burbs isn’t quite the same thing, even though there are many more places to really walk.
Yes, you know I know people who used to have a dog but don’t anymore so don’t feel comfortable to be out walking. Or won’t walk without a friend or family member - not because of safety reasons, they just feel like they don’t want to do it alone.
It’s a simple way to go out of your comfort zone to do something good for yourself. Use headphones or just soak in the sounds of the neighborhood/park/whatever - you don’t have to go fast or far -you don’t have to compare yourself to anyone but what YOU want - it’s your game, your call. Breathe in some fresh air!
You can add an hour for me yesterday. 3.5 miles:)
I’m glad to walk with another but I’m usually alone. I can go whenever I want and go wherever I want.
I mostly listen to podcasts, they are my imaginary friends ;).
I don’t have a lot of patience to wait around for someone to do things with. I’m glad to shop by myself, exercise by myself. I’ll even eat in restaurants by myself occasionally.
I have a lovely little walk – from here to the end of my street is one mile, so I just do those two miles when I feel like being outside. Usually, though, I’m with my dogs in the woods (up and down hill and dale) or on the elliptical and/or the treadmill.
I listen to my favorite shows on my NPR station while I walk, via their app. Yesterday, when I walked for an hour to the nearest Target to my house, I would have been really bored without something to listen to.
@deb922, you just so described me! I want to go where I want to go, when I want to go. Give me my headphones and I’m content!
But if a walking friend is what works for you, go for it! Just don’t be afraid to branch out.
I did my part yesterday. 3 hours and 45 minutes worth. With trail crampons.
H and I try to walk an hour (or more) each evening. In the summer, we wait until late at night so it’s a little cooler. In winter we go as early as possible. I try to walk at least another 30 minutes each day, sometimes with a friend and sometimes solo.
There are plenty of things I’ll do by myself, too. But my pup was my favorite walking buddy.
My hiking group is well into their 70’s, that’s much older than I am- and they’re much more fit. But they’re friendly and never mind the ones who need a little more time.
