taking summer classes at community college?

I have been suggested by someone to take boring classes like psychology/sociology and/or freshmen composition

at community college during summer after I finish my spring semester so that I can have more time for Chem E. but does taking summer classes require

getting I-20 at that CC? It’s not like I am going to study for 2 years or 4 years. Just this summer.

@MYOS1634‌ or B@r!um? @artloversplus‌ ?? could you help me, please?

I can’t help you with the I-20 question – but I will advise that you first check with your school if they will give you credit for the summer community college classes. Not everything transfers; make sure that whatever you take does.

Yes I have taken classes all two summers and two winters, I always got an written approval from my college before register. Classes were from William & Mary as well as Cc.

It’s HIGHLY unlikely a CC writing class will transfer to a 4-year university if taken as a way to circumvent the 4 year university’s requirement.
In addition if you’re premed, it may be a better idea NOT to take Psych/Soc at community college in the summer (in addition, these classes can be fascinating, they’re not necessarily boring - ask around for the best options) unless you intend to take a 2nd class in the subject at the 4-year university, since the CC basic class is unlikely to cover as much as what the 4-year university class would cover, and that material will be on the MCAT, thus placing you at a disadvantage compared to other premeds who took the more thorough version of the class. If your intent is to take only one class in Psych and one class in Soc for premed purposes, my recommendation to you would be to take them as the Honors version, in order to keep them as more interactive and more engaging (since you imagine them boring) and more thorough than average.

I m NOT considering to take main courses in CC. That would be horrible!

I am just thinking about Soc/Psych because I want to have more time in other stuff(considering Chem E now)…also, I think I will take Eng. class for non native speakers in UA. Not remedial, btw.

EAP (English for Academic Purposes) is a very good class to take, as is the Writing/Composition section of the class for non native speakers when it’s offered (NYU has several sections, for instance). It’s definitely not remedial, but tackles the special challenges college poses when English is not your native language while you have a very fluent understanding of it.

Yes, you can take classes at another college in the summer without transferring your I-20, as long as you’re properly enrolled in the preceding spring semester and the following fall semester.

That being said, I’d recommend you ask your own international student office if you’re allowed to take summer classes elsewhere. That will prevent any unpleasant surprises later in case your college has stricter rules in place than the ‘bare’ legal requirements. And since the community college will have to verify your legal status, your own international student office will have to get involved eventually anyway.
