TAMU Class of 2023 - Admission Decisions/Discussion

@Thelma2 Daughter #1 holistic review, similar stats to #2, full admission received January 11th, 2016.

We have received, from various Admissions representatives, a variety of answers, each seemingly later than the prior, in which we could expect a decision. So whether real, or simply the optics for this year, information I’ve received personally from Admissions, information shared here on CC as well as information from the other “fan” site has left my family and I the distinct impression that the wait time has been extended. This is, of course, notwithstanding all that you say in post #3202, among others, concerning the “late March” dates published on the web and espoused in other locations. So again, perhaps for us it’s simply the “optics” of my families current specific situation, but that is the way it “feels” to my family, and we are VERY disappointed for sure. Very regrettable indeed that our experience has led us to feel this way - right or wrong . . . . . We’re still cautiously optimistic, we shall see.

With all of that said, it’s very likely our specific family situation is not analogous to others, so may very well not apply to others, and I’m sure others don’t feel the way we do . . . . I’m certainly not trying to influence others beliefs, just sharing ours. :slight_smile:

@PossiblyAggieMe
My daughter got 6 tabs on Wed., Jan. 30th, her AIS updated around noon the next day (Thursday), and she got her packet in the mail exactly one week later (on the following Thursday).

we are still waiting but what is freaking me out is he was only 10 points off in reading/writing otherwise he would have been academic admit and is why he was put in Hollistic review and now its starting to feel like when he was offered the CAP program at UT. Still holding out hope.

@IT22379 what’s freaking me out is that there are a LOT of us who were so close. My son was .25 points from academic admit (29 ACT - his avg of 4 sections was 29.25; just needed average to push up to 29.5 to get 30). Unfortunately, I have a feeling a lot of us will be disappointed with the outcome (even if Blinn Team).

Thelma2 When you say “We make decisions throughout the year.” Does that mean you work for TAMU?

I was JUST about to ask the same question lol

@KimmyJoe @nervoustamumommy She was quoting the website. If you click on that link you will see the exactly verbiage she used.

@sma1234 dude you need to breathe. I don’t mean to sound harsh but for real. Not many have heard on here. And if tamu only cared about quartile then holy cow they would roll out decisions in December for everyone. They look at everything hence the word holistic review. They look over every app no less than 2 times. The entire file. They want to give every student the optimal experience for success. Everybody feels like they have gone to a competitve school. If I had a dollar for every time that’s said, Thelma and I would go on vacay in the Bahamas! I’m not trying to be flippant, although I realize this sounds that way, but really, until you hear, don’t expect the worst. Be on here for info and support, not for pity party. So chin up buckaroo. It’s going to be okay! I pinky promise. :relaxed:

@treytexag

It is INFINITELY more difficult to get in to A&M that when your D1 applied.

Total Applications for D1 for fall 2105 were 33,000
Total applications for fall 2019 42,000.
Offers of Admission for Fall 2015 were 22,371.
For fall 2019, we know from the conference the other night that 20,000 offers of admission had already gone out.

The retention rate is only slightly higher for non top 10% white students over automatic top 10% under represented minorities and there is no way to know the factors that contribute to slightly less retention rate. I am still working on the graduation rates for 2012 and 2013, where we have complete 5 and 6 year percentages of graduation.

Graduation % based on Headcounts and not retained numbers

Class 2014 the most recent class with 4 yr graduation rates

African American Top 10%
303 Headcount
252 or 83.20% Retained after 1 yr
143 or 57% Graduated in 4 years

African American Non Top 10%
88 Headcount
73 or 83% Retained after 1 yr
39 or 44.30% Graduated in 4 years

Hispanic Top 10%
1731 Headcount
1442 or 83.30% Retained after 1 yr
870 or 50.3% graduated in 4 years

Hispanic Not Top 10%
513 Headcount
456 or 88.90% Retained after 1 yr
262 or 49.10% Graduated in 4 years

Asian Top 10%
395 Headcount
351 or 88.90% Retained after 1 yr
223 or 56.50% Graduated in 4 years

Asian Not Top 10%
289 Headcount
265 or 91.70% Retained after 1 yr
152 or 52.50% Graduated in 4 years

White Top 10%
3155 Headcount
2946 or 93.40% Retained after 1 yr
2018 or 64% Graduated in 4 years

White Not Top 10%
2181 Headcount
2002 or 91.80% Retained after 1 yr
1224 or 56.10% Graduated in 4 years

I read the past couple pages and people need to relax. Look, the top 10% rule might have its flaws and full admission to CSTAT as a review admit might be tough to come by. But, who knows, it could be some of the smallest things in the applications that tip the scales of the admissions office. There’s so much we don’t know about it and I don’t think it is helpful to speculate like this.

For reference, I was admitted full to CStat engineering OOS Massachusetts, review admit.

Always wish the best for everyone though, hang in there

@KimmyJoe @nervoustamumommy

No, I don’t work for TAMU. I copied what the website said and put a link to the website. I should have put " _" around it. Sorry for confusion

@Thelma2 ???

My daughter and I were joking tonight that someone from admissions is reading this thread and everytime we guess on a date for an admissions wave, they all laugh and say ‘Nope! Not today!’!! ?

My soapbox -

We can argue the top 10% rule until we are blue in the face. The bottom line is as our state population grows (we are damn lucky to be living in a growth state) so do the number of students needing to attend college. TAMU and UT can not admit every highly qualified student. There is just not the room.

This is where the other large scale research universities need to step up. UTD, TTU, UH, Texas State and UNT need to up their game. AND parents need to adjust their opinions of these schools. They are NOT the same schools that they were 20 years ago.

The out of state schools actively recruiting your students with near in state tuition costs - are doing do because they want your out of state monies. Even if it is just a few grand more than what in state students pay - it is still more money. (I’m not knocking going out of state - it it’s the best fit - more power to you). But understand it for what it is. Texas has more high quality students than they can put in their two top state schools. And out of state schools look to capitalize on the hurt pride of students that don’t get into TAMU and UT. With that blow they are counting on students wanting an out of state adventure VS “settling” on an in state school that they feel is beneath their talents (partially based on the opinions of adults whose knowledge is 2 or three or more decades old ).

Just my thoughts…

@BlueBayouAZ I could not agree more with you!!! I went to Texas State (Southwest Tx at the time) and have had so many adults, who did not know where I went to school, say really ugly things about it. One mom told me that she wouldn’t let her son go there because she was afraid he would end up bringing home a “Texas State girl”… Like the girls there are automatically terrible sinners! We have a state full of great universities that don’t get any credit, except for the big 2!

Sorry, @Thelma2 after I read again I’d realized I’d read it before. However, with the amount of knowledge you have, you’d be a great asset working there! I think you might even teach them a thing or two. Yours and @AggieMomhelp time and efforts are absolutely amazing for those of us waiting. So many questions we can’t just call and bug admissions about, definitely helps the wait feel less stressful knowing others relate to the anticipation and can learn things we’d otherwise be worrying about 24/7. Thank you so much ?

I wish the Recreation, Parks & Tourism Science was offered elsewhere in the state, but it’s just not available. My kid applied to 5 TX schools, each of them a different major–I kid you not. He’s a homebody so no OOS for him. His choice. For him, it’s A&M and his dream major or Tech for a meh major. He will bloom where he is planted. The good news is he’s not nearly as stressed about it as Mama Bear! :slight_smile:

@daleNchip what will he specialize in for RPTS? And I agree. Not many RPTS degrees. My daughter started recreational therapy at OSU. Finished here in RPTS youth development

@nervoustamumommy Besides, with everyone anxiously waiting on a decision, IF I did work for the university, which I DON’T, do you think I’d admit it right now?
:-S Ha Ha

Here’s the thing, @AggieMomhelp and I go through this gut wrenching every year with all y’all and we get to know you and your kids, and want to jump up and down with all of you and celebrate your kids dreams. It’s rough sometimes and our hearts heart hurt for applicants and their families when the decisions they wanted don’t come.

It is so much more difficult than when we were in school and even when perhaps an elder child went through.

@kaydeeloo My eldest is at TX State and it has been a great school. There is a program there that we are heavily involved with and that is the Concrete Industry Management degree. Concrete is the #2 building material in the world next to water. People have biases and prejudices out of ignorance rather than information and facts and they often let them hang out like they were an accessory. Not a pretty look.
All three of mine are musicians in addition to their majors and for fun, have played a few venues in some spots there on the square. They are pretty good but they know that their day job is school.
However, their football sucks and it’s hard to get excited about and the parking is expensive.

@BlueBayouAZ You hop on that soap box and clean up the place any ole time you want to. Well said.
UTDallas and UT Arlington have expanded exponentially in the last 6 years. Unrecognizable. UTA also partners with Lockheed Martin in some ways. The College of Engineering is the 3rd largest in the state and the College of Nursing and Health Innovations, (where my D is), is the largest in the state and 3rd in the US Brand new apartments are going up everywhere and their enrollment topped 50K. While they are not Big 12 and SEC schools with D1 football they can be great education and college experiences. This may be sacrilegious, but my Aggie goes to almost every basketball game over football games. The “College Experience” is where you make it.

So I’m kinda getting my self prepared in case I do not get accepted (i hope it doesn’t come to that) do they send you a rejection letter? If so, when does that normally happen?
