TAMU Class of 2023 - Admission Decisions/Discussion

Thanks @Thelma2 - I would encourage anyone to check out UTD. Their average test scores are higher than even TAMU. They attract a scholarly population, if that is what you are looking for.

Even if you went there with your older child as recently as 5 years ago, it’s worth another look. With the addition of the freshman dorms - it made huge strides to leave commuter school reputation behind. I think the percentage of students living on campus is comparable to TAMU and UT now - still less than schools like SFA that require freshmen to live on campus.

@bluebayouaz @thelma2 I wholeheartedly agree with your thoughts. My husband graduated microbiology from UTD and went on to Georgetown (DC) for
med school. It is an underrated school with so much to offer. We, the parents, need to open our minds to these other great Texas schools. The process and population increase makes it imperative that we do so. Waiting for so many deserving kiddos to get their nod to A&M!
I still have PTSD from my first kid review, who is now an Aggie Junior (accepted TEAB over full admit to UT Biomedical Engineering). Our second was accepted in October under review to Communications…I can’t tell you why she was ‘chosen’, just hanging on this thread as I feel attached to so many of you. Lots of good thoughts and prayers headed your way. More admits to come! My junior son didn’t hear until late Feb or early March (class of 2020)

@Cmringvelski
Don’t give in yet. We have not seen Blinn Team offers or Gateway come out. Always have a plan B and be ready to roll with C-Z because that is how life is.

There will be some that will not be made any offer and your AIS will say they regret that they cannot offer you admissions at this time or something to that effect. More commonly is that, in absence of an admission decision, your AIS will say that you are being offered PSA or Program for System Admissions and it will list the school(s) you can choose from should you wish to go that route.
Some people opt to take it and others do not, as not every major participates. Some elect to attend elsewhere and try to transfer and other attend Blinn and try to transfer. Other’s choose to attend somewhere else altogether.

@tamu23plz they told my 2019 daughter a week ago Geoscience was the only major open. That is the route my oldest took last year to transfer in while awaiting the right time to change her major to Biology.

@AggieMomhelp , he’ll likely do all but youth development in RPTS. Like his mama, he doesn’t so much like kids, LOL. I could see him working at a historic tourist destination (the Alamo, San Jacinto State Park, etc.). That kid would love to learn everything there is to know about somewhere and talk about it to strangers all day long–the same stories day after day. :-@ An Aggie alum friend turned him on to RPTS late in his college search and it was as if the clouds parted and the sun shone down upon A&M. And so. . . we wait.

He’s lucky to have other very good options in his pocket should A&M fall through. He knows that and we know that. Like I said, he’s a bloom-where-he’s-planted kind of guy. I got declined to my own dream school, went to the in-state rival and found my people (and, ultimately, my Mr. Right). Totally different direction than I had intended, but absolutely the right direction for me. My kid has heard the story so often he is tired of it. Still, I like to tell it to pass the time. And annoy him. And to explain why my two favorite teams are my college and whoever plays those jerks down the highway who had the audacity to turn me down.

Might have just lost all my hope for ever attending TAMU… my first choice of major was allied health and second choice was Public health. I heard that this past Saturday the public health forum announced that the major was filled up already. I’m sure allied health would be as well since it is the most popular “pre-nursing” major.

If you are after a nursing degree and on the same boat as me, I recommend UTSA. They offer full admittance into their nursing program if you maintain a certain GPA (3.6 I believe) which would be a moderately competitive GPA when applying to nursing programs. They also have a really great NCLEX Score, on par with TAMU. TAMU has a a 97.87% passing rate and UTSA has a 98% passing rate of the NCLEX. https://www.bon.texas.gov/pdfs/education_pdfs/education_programs/RN%205YR-17.pdf

Anyways I wish the best of luck to everyone and hopefully a wave will be coming soon!

That’s awesome @dalenchip. It’s great when the click and focus on something. RPTS advisors are really good and the college of ag is one of the best. Keep us posted!!!

@futurenurse99 Oh geeze, I am sorry to hear that. Someone reported here that that is what they said. Last year, and I don’t know if it is going to be true for this year, but some public and allied health majors were offered the campus in McAllen, which is considered full admissions and you can switch campuses after one year. So, don’t give up hope yet, if that is something you would consider.

@thelma2 I am fully ready to transfer into A&M. I just live by expect the worst hope for the best.

@AggieMomhelp
Would you say that what @futurenurse99 said is true? My top major was allied health and I’m really hoping it’s still available. At this point I would be fine with doing TEAM. If a major is “full” does that mean it’s also full for a possible TEAM student?

@Thelma2 - How would it show on the account if offered Blinn Team? Would it show 6 tabs or something else?

@nervousaggie101 I honestly have no idea about Allied Health being full. There are other majors that feed into the nursing program like nutrition and biology. Don’t give up hope yet. And no…Team and full majors are independent.

I just find it intresting how no one at my school who is a review applicant has heard anything from TAMU.

@AggieMomhelp or @Thelma2 - Since I am seeing that looks like the majority of major’s are full at this point what happens to those applicants who are still hanging on in hopes of getting admitted - if there are no other majors available? I am curious why have review admits even worry about applying to A&M before Dec 1 since clearly those applicants who applied back in July-Oct as review admits aren’t even considered until after every Auto admit/academic admit and thus the waiting is excruciating as everyone has indicated. My child didn’t want to add anything in her essay about some health issues she had beg of high school that really hurt her rank as she didn’t want to seem like she was getting special treatment but looking back I think we both are thinking that would have been best as her essay, EC’s, references, AP and D/C classes and test scores rock but her rank is avg…lastly, if a student’s individual SAT scores for math/reading components are higher then then the individual scores rec but since A&M doesn’t superscore the total was about 20 points short of the 1360 required how does that factor in? I can appreciate that admissions has had a ton of applicants to review but the information that keeps being given by my child’s Aggie campus advisor has been changing constantly as has the info seen from others on this site so it leads to the anxiety and by end of March is really dismal…will you post when all spots have been filled? Thank both of you for your help on this forum.

My son is a review applicant and still waiting also. I think he’s already “moved on” from TAMU but I still check EVERY day to see the status. I am so VERY thankful for @Thelma2 and @AggieMomhelp for the incredible time they put into this forum answering questions, providing links and being encouragers. You all are saints.

I am so glad I found this forum around the time my son was applying. To be honest, when my son was a sophomore/junior and expressed a desire to go to A&M, I (wrongly and naively) assumed he would get in. He has pretty good stats, great EC’s, owns and runs a successful business, blah blah blah. I think as parents, we all believe our kids shine and that’s how it should be. And not to put down TAMU at ALL, but I felt like “well it’s not one of the Ivies, so of course he will get accepted.” I just didn’t know how tough it was to get in until I started following this board. While it was disheartening, I’m so glad I had this information during application time and that we didn’t put all our eggs in the TAMU basket. : ) He selected Mays as his first choice with AgBusiness as his second (no interest in Ag but recruiter told him to put that as his second choice).

Thankfully, we are not diehard Aggie folks - no one in our family has been to A&M. I am not originally from Texas but moved here when I was pregnant with my son so thank god he didn’t have the pressure to be an Aggie and carry on the legend. I read posts on here about kids who have a long line of Aggies before them and always dreamt of being an Aggie and my heart breaks to know the disappointment they feel when they don’t make the cut.

So, while the decisions have not come out yet, we are already prepared. He’s been accepted to Baylor (first choice), TCU, and Texas Tech. Still working out the details and he hasn’t made a decision. While I wish TAMU would be a choice for him, it doesn’t seem to be in the cards with Mays being full.

Wishing everyone the very best in this process and thanks for all of the great information! I will continue to follow this board and report in when he receives a decision. Here are his stats for whatever it’s worth:

GPA: 3.6 (u/w); 4.1 (w)
SAT: 1230
Class rank: 20%
Attended a STEM magnet program in our public school system so it’s fairly competitive. He took 9 AP classes.

Letter of rec from a distinguished Aggie. 300+ hours of community service, earning Presidential Volunteer Service Award. Started business in junior year of high school and is growing strong. Attended TAMU STEM summer camp.

He could have been in more clubs but chose to spend his time with one organization that does community service work and travel abroad and start his own business. No regrets. Like all other parents, I just want him to be happy and do what he LOVES. Everything else will fall into place.

On this forum there have been a very few review applicants that report being offered admission @texantexantexan, but there are a few.

This has nothing to do with which school is “better.” But I do think there is some logic to the university “pecking” order.

The data shows UT is more difficult to get into than TAMU overall. Once again, not a judgement on which school is better or individual programs within each school, but a statement of overall statistical fact (Precent admitted and test scores). We know that the schools use algorithms and historical trends to base their admissions offers. So it would stand to reason that TAMU would wait until UT gets to a certain point in their admission process.

Recently - UT had what appeared to be a HUGE wave of CAPed students. (Including a kid I know hovering around a rank of 20% with a 36 ACT). My daughter said “No one was talking about college admissions - then suddenly everyone was talking about getting CAPed in every class and at lunch.” My daughter is in 4 AP classes - so academically minded folks. The CAPing was followed by a bunch of out of state denials. I don’t follow UT admission - but I believe it works differently where you are evaluated and admitted to individual departments. Compared to TAMU (with the exception of engineering) where you are admitted to the university and then placed into your major of choice based on availability. When the wave of CAP went out - I was seeing chatter that a couple departments still had decisions pending at UT.

My theory is once UT gets to point X - and TAMU has all of their AUTO and ACADEMIC admits placed - TAMU can really look at their pool and see where they are at. I bet there is some predictor they can run off admission acceptances and NSC registrations that gives them an idea of how many of their admitted students are really going to enroll. I suspect that there is a mini wave of TAMU admissions acceptances after UT CAPs. Understand there are a decent number of people ranked 8, 9, or 10% - with near perfect test scores - that are not getting into UT.

There is a chance they TAMU is looking at a record number of people who have accepted their admission at this point. Plus it is probably really hard to compare last year’s date data to this year’s because of the Harvey extension. So things might look fuller sooner - if that makes sense.

Again - just my thoughts.

@aggiegurl Ooooh I wish she would have addressed any challenge she faced when writing her essay. It’s a part of her story and what makes her who she is now. There’s no shame or crime in that. But, no need to stress about that now. They do look at all scores but when they do their “algorithm” thing, it’ll be the highest (non super scored) test score and rank. That’s only 50% of what drives the decision. If all majors are full that she chose, they will ask her to pick another one if admitted. She can always try to change majors after meeting those requirements set by her desired major.

I know it’s frustrating. It is temporary though, and it’ll all work out. The information coming out from so many places are probably given with the best intent and best intel they have at the time. HOWEVER, we all know that only admission advisors know the real story and they are very tight lipped. I don’t mean the admissions office, I mean the ones making the decisions. I do not envy them!

Chin up!

@Thelma2 Great line!!: “People have biases and prejudices out of ignorance rather than information and facts and they often let them hang out like they were an accessory.”

@SAMomofOne Your son has some great choices already and will excel at any of them. My daughters boyfriend graduated from Tech and he absolutely LOVED it! Very campus collegiate feel. As would TCU be. It’s the sticker shock that got me with TCU! My son didn’t get any money though, otherwise I think he may have really considered it over TAMU. Alas, he’s in Econ but wanted Mays. If your son is thinking Finance, then really have him look at econ as his major vs. ag business. Then he can minor in Business. IT’s a strong degree. If he’s wanting marketing or mgmt, then ag business would be a better route. Food for thought and best of luck. Hope y’all hear soon and he can make the decision that will set him up long term!!!

Hi everyone. New to the forum but I’ve been reading responses all day and there is some great info. It’s great to see so many people branching out from the Texas top 2 schools. I once had a counselor in high school tell our class that there is more than 2 universities in Texas and I was like, whaaaat?? My son has been accepted to Baylor, UTK(ranked #3 in the nation for his major), and Arkansas. TAMU was a last minute option just to stay closer to home. Either way he has some good choices so we’re not worried. He wants to stay closer to home but I told him a drive from TAMU or a flight from Arkansas are both a little over an hour. So, we’re waiting but, honestly, it’s waiting(ish). He’s doing a trip in March to do a final check at both UofA and UTK and then he’ll make a decision. If he hasn’t heard from TAMU by then I guess it’s not meant to be. Good luck to everyone and I hope you all get the answers you want!
