TAMU Class of 2023 - Admission Decisions/Discussion

@IT22379 Did your son apply to UTD? My neighbor’s son is there for actuary.

@52AG82 Wow, after reading some of these posts I’m shocked you are considering Texas A&M. It’s a fantastic school. Yes, waiting for admissions decisions is difficult, but Texas A&M is a nationally ranked school. I truly believe they are trying to find the right fit for the students. I live in Austin. My husband and I have degrees from UT. We currently have family members attending UT and A&M. I will tell you hands down A&M is the classier school in all respects. The difference between UT and A&M is that A&M realizes they are a Texas public institution. They are doing their best to find a fit for all students here in Texas. I appreciate that. UT does not. Both schools are nationally ranked which is outstanding, but comparing them is like apples to oranges.

I understand the waiting is frustrating. We went through this with our son last year. I don’t want to be ugly on this thread but I can’t sit here and listen to someone bash a wonderful school. It’s strange my blood was burnt orange but it is slowly turning maroon. Gig’em!

So I just looked my MY posts here dating back to September/October - October started whining about the wait (FYI my daughter applied to transfer for Spring 2019 so the waiting started with her first - she is at TAMU now  ). I feel like I can hear UT AO and TAMU AO having a conversation - TAMU AO said to UT AO “You think your applicants have a long wait??” then TAMU AO says “Hold my beer.”

@TexasTrue we toured UTD I loved the school and its one of TOP actuarial schools in the country but he did’nt like it it he wants the Big Div 1 Type school where the town is all about the school. His cousins all went to Indiana, Kentucky, IOWA.

@IT22379 My daughter feels the same way about UTD. Top notch animation program with great connections, but lackluster feel on the campus with no football team.

Still “In Review” this morning. I take this as good news :).

@52AG82 my daughter is going for a pre professional program (pre-dental). When she was putting UH #4 in her choice and A&M as #1 I told her that I think the pre-heatlth program in UH is better than A&M (no offense meant), however, she just like A&M so much just like most of the kids in this forum

@learner234 @Sybylla - sorry, CS in my post meant College Station, apologies

@chercheur - thanks, I was thinking of the same thing (save). My initial number crunching show that we might be able to afford OOS tuition in Purdue - but the family has to give up some stuff as we will be having 3 kids in college at the same this fall.

Personally, I am leaning towards UH, but it’s a very hard to pull it up to #1 position (in my daughter’s view) at this time. Still hoping for A&M though

@TexasTrue as much as my son is all about academics he wants to enjoy Football, Basketball and Volleball games. He wants the option of Fraternities if it comes up and UTD was less than an hour drive so he wants somewhere farther from home.

@GManmom123 I think you totally misread what I wrote. I’m not bashing A&M…at all! My husband is an Aggie, and my daughter will proudly be Class of 2023. I didn’t go to either, but I have parents and relatives who are both Aggies and Longhorns-both great schools!
In a state the size of Texas, there simply isn’t room (sadly) for every student to attend UT, A&M. That’s where the CAP/system schools need to be supported better. The Top 6% and 10% rule is tough, but they have to do something.
For real, I’m not bashing A&M…quite the opposite! I couldn’t be happier she’s going there in the fall! I’m sad for all her friends who are still ‘in review’ at A&M. At least her friends who didn’t get into UT got a decision sooner, and it was Yes, CAP or No. Harsh, but clear cut answer, and they could move on. Many of these A&M kids waiting may miss out on housing elsewhere, and some may be scrambling to quickly apply to other schools. It would be nice if timelines and decisions were similar.
Again, I am absolutely not bashing A&M. Bought a ‘Aggie Mom’ sticker for my car this past weekend & everything! Our house bleeds maroon ??

(And I definitely agree that A&M is the ‘classier’ school ?)

@aponiventoy oh! For dental or vision, UH definitely has a solid program. UT Dental is in Houston and I think a large number of UH pre-dental students filter there. Don’t know anything about Purdue pre-dental.
Brand new basketball arena at UH, and football team is holding its own! It isn’t in the best part of town (but that can be said for many universities), but new construction on campus, and I think some fairly new dorms. Take a hard look at UH, if she doesnt get into TAMU.

I don’t feel like voicing frustration over the length of the wait = “bashing” the school

@52AG82 Sorry if I went off on a tangent. I really hope our kids get good news very soon. As I mentioned in my earlier post, we waited this long for my son to get notice of admission. I really think a huge wave will happen very soon. My son heard in late February last year and so did many of his classmates.

Hang in there! Hopefully we can both be singing the Aggie fight song together!

@GManmom123 my daughter was accepted to A&M in September. It has been nice knowing that, but the bulk of her friends are still ‘in review’. I am frustrated for them, and for yours. Clearly the system is overloaded this year-not the fault of Admissions, I don’t think they saw this coming. It wasn’t pretty, but UT did a favor to their applicants, by offering the Yes, CAP and No. Those students have had time to apply elsewhere. It will be very late at this point, for the A&M students to come up with alternate plans, if they don’t get the path they want.

Please keep me posted on your child ???

I think it is really sad and a step in the wrong direction if TAMU does away with the Academic Admissions group, the Top 25% with stellar SAT or ACT scores and components. That sounds like it will make the grueling review admissions process take even longer as so many more students will end up in the review category. And I also think it is likely to push more of the best and brightest of Texas to go OOS if they can’t count on being an Academic Admit.

It will also probably increase the “shopping for the Top 10%” switching of schools during the HS years to capitalize on being in the Top 10% at a school which has smaller cohort of high performing students.

In our ISD, the difference in the SAT scores between the top HS and the next ranked HS is considerable, as it the overall gpa. Usually at least half of all National Merit Semifinalists and sometimes 2/3 of all of NMS (30-40+) are from one school in the ISD. Another school might have 10-15 NMS and several schools will have one or two or NO NMS at all.

At one school in our ISD, a 3.5 unweighted will pretty much guarantee a spot in the Top 10% whereas it won’t even be in the Top 50% at the top ranked school. All of these students are in the same ISD which is neighborhood zoned.

I can’t imagine what the process will be like by the time my future grandchildren are going through the college admissions process. At this point, I am glad that I don’t have any younger children, my oldest daughter is an Aggie graduate, Class of 2016 and my youngest daughter is Class of 2021.

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting. I was hoping to see a bunch of offers posted on CC today. Hope they all arrive soon.

I think that the vast majority of top 25% with high test scores will still get in @AggieMomhelp even if they make the change. A change like that just gives them a tiny bit more flexibility on who to accept. Using the pie chart admissions posted for the 2018 freshman admission profile. Of the full admitted students not in the top 10% of their graduating classes - 55% were academic and 45% were not. If anything - I think the change could reduce the number of out of state students coming to TAMU. As it stands now - you can be automatically admitted even if you are not a Texas resident. With space now so limited at TAMU and UT - I would think anyone from OOS does need to go through an holistic review.

@AggieMomAgain We have the same scenario in our district. We have 10 high schools and some of them, my daughter’s included, are so competitive that it is incredibly difficult to be competitive. A 3.8UW or 4.8W won’t even get you in the top 25%. Extremely frustrating. But we are were we are and now need to look at alternative schools. We moved to this district for the schools and now wishing we had moved out to a more rural district and secured top 10%. Hindsight is 20/20.

Should it be considered a good sign if I did not hear back this week? Still in review since October. Have any gateways or PSA offers went out today, or BlinnTEAM? Have yet to see or hear any fulls. Also, I agree heavily with @AggieMomAgain about the difference in rank for similar GPA’s. It is frustrating but I try to see the positives.

@52AG82 - You do bring up an important point about students without a solid back-up plan having to scramble at the last minute if they don’t get what they are hoping for from TAMU. My daughter applied to LSU even though she missed the deadline (she got an email saying - Hey our deadline has passed but you can still apply). She is also still getting emails from TTU inviting her to regional meetings.

It took a little over a week - but she was admitted to LSU.

I would strongly recommend students that don’t have a safety school they can see themselves at - expand their search a little. And apply quickly.

@BlueBayouAZ I think you meant to tag @AggieMomAgain not me, lol… but I appreciate the stats as always!

Next week will be the tell all on what’s left to be offered. Can someone who has been admitted already, what the deadline is to accept admission/sign up for NSC… is it May1st?

Hello everyone, Does anyone know how long it will Say that I am being considered for Blinn Bryan

Sorry about that @AggieMomhelp!
