TAMU Class of 2023 - Admission Decisions/Discussion

@52AG82 Much of the info we’ve received visiting was way inaccurate. At this point, really doesn’t matter since this is almost over, but definitely a little disheartening primarily because I feel like a big dummy assuming I know what I’m talking about based on what they’ve said, only to find out they were wrong lol.

Dang @AggieMomhelp that is A LOT of majors. I can definitely see how a misunderstanding could occur if the student did say the largest college and that what was heard was the most students or a misspeak by the student tour guide and say it had the most people, thinking it probably did because it is the largest college on campus. Totally see how that can happen. I didn’t even occur to me the size of the college itself when thinking of the numbers.

Interesting article posted about UT admissions this cycle. The whole time I’m reading it, I’m thinking this article could just as easily been written about TAMU.

@Chemengmom I read the UT article today, and thought the exact same thing…

@nervoustamumommy we have to remember that these are all young people giving these tours, all working to make some $ and some will be better than others. I don’t think they are on purpose giving misleading or inaccurate information but as you can see with the prior example of miscommunication, how what one particular thing that is said can be interpreted/restated that says something completely different. That is why in my posts I try to be explicit to what I am addressing because if I leave gaps, it leaves room for a lot of interpretation that our brains naturally want to fill and can lead to a lot of misunderstandings, then someone misreads the misunderstanding and then a mistake can take on a life of its own.
These kids giving tours are not thinking along those lines and knowing what they mean but what is actually said is not always the same. Or what is said is not what we hear.
When we toured for my youngest in Dec 15, the commons was under construction. Our tour guide said that they Commons would be complete by Summer. Of course, we all thought she meant Summer 2016, just in time for our kids. What she meant, or maybe didn’t know, was it was due to be complete summer 2017, after our boys moved off campus. Surprise!

Oh yes, @Thelma2 totally understand that. I’m not mad, it’s a lot of information they have to remember! I was just referencing mainly the “trivia” portions as @NotanAggie mentioned. So far on the tours, prospective student sessions etc. they give a trivia or “fun fact”. Similar to the one mentioned regarding the size of the liberal arts college such as “fun fact! Did you know the liberal arts college has the most students?” (Or however it was worded, but that’s how it’s been for all of our visits so far, except different fun facts) and many were incorrect. Mostly meaning, I don’t think that he/she misunderstood it, more like it was mistated just as many “trivia’s” were on our journeys. Anyways, was mostly making a funny about feeling like a big dummy whenever I’ve repeated an incorrect fun fact. Definitely don’t plan on spending the time learning every piece of data in TAMU history (must’ve taken you forever to get so much of this down to be able to help others!) but, I laugh at how little I actually know. Went into this thinking I knew quite a bit haha :relaxed:

So is it pretty much safe to assume that if an international student has not received an admission by now, he or she is pretty much rejected???

@DaRaverLA being international has nothing to do with anything, I wouldn’t think?? There are apparently many students still ‘in review’…all still waiting.

@AggieMomhelp @Thelma2 So in howdy, the financial aid award came up, but it said the total cost of attendace was still 20k. I am instate and in blinn academy, so wouldn’t it be cheaper than the 20k I need to pay?

@AggieMomAgain I am sure Blinn Engr Academy is similar to Blinn team Or @trinley Can one of you help @learner234 navigate how TEAB works on his Howdy Portal and his costs?

@learner234 I believe that is your estimated cost because you have not actually enrolled in Blinn College, which will be a separate billing from TAMU Billing. You will have to pay all required tuition and fees (separately) at both schools. The payment of fees made to each institution must meet the respective institution’s deadline. They have different deadlines also.

Does it itemize your costs? I never see a Howdy portal except the parent payment portal, where I log in and can see things itemized. Do you just have a total or itemization?

You also need to set this up as soon as possible. Registering for Direct Deposit will speed the flow of financial aid (http://sbs.tamu.edu/refunds/).

@Thelma2 What refund is the website talking about?

Any refund made by the university has to go through this account, Every student has to have one.

Did anyone hear any kind of news this morning? Still quiet here… :frowning:

We are still waiting to hear on my daughter’s admit for this year, but I wanted to pass on information I recently learned regarding admissions starting next year. This information was confirmed by an admissions office Monday. Starting with the class of 2024 there will only be Auto Admit for top 10%. They are removing the Academic Admit for test scores. Everyone outside of top 10% will go to holistic review.

It makes me very sad for this year’s kids still waiting. Clearly it’s a huge issue that is effecting their ability to choose the students they want over the students they have to take. Ours kids are getting the short end of the stick in a broken system that isn’t getting patched until it’s too late for them. I know there is still hope, but any other year my daughter would have been accepted a month ago. As this is her #1 by far it’s been a very disheartening experience.

@alstro what is your source? I can understand why they are doing this - I think they should do like other universities and put every applicant under the holistic microscope. Sigh. I read an article about UT and what they are proposing is while the top 6% will be auto-admit, they will designate them to a school within the UT system…auto admits will not automatically be assigned to UT Austin. I wish I could post the link - search The Parents Dean 2019 UT Admissions: The New Reality. Should be first article that pops up (under google engine anyway).

The link to this article was posted one page back. I don’t doubt TAMU will be changing up admissions, and frankly, they need to. UT system is smoking the A&M system. In my opinion. UT has strong, free standing universities they CAP their students to. A&M has way too many pathways, overflows, teams, academies and acronyms-I can’t keep it all straight-it’s almost like Fun Fair Positive Soccer, where everyone gets a trophy. There is simply not room for all that apply at UT or A&M, but UT doing a much better job supporting their system schools.
A&M needs to CAP and start making their system schools strong, like UT has done. Just my opinion…

@JaceyK A good friend saw it on an Aggie Alumni website and called our local admission office to confirm. She has a younger daughter that will get caught by this and she wanted to confirm what she saw online.

@alstro - I am not surprised that they would remove the “academic” admit, more commonly referred to as assured admission at other universities. UTD did so a few years ago. But that just gives them a little more control over who they let in. It doesn’t fix the greater issue of too many applicants and not enough space. They really need to grow their system schools. Make them destination schools and not just pathways to College Station.

@JaceyK @52AG82 as much as my son liked UT and where considering the CAP program it did not make any sense to us that his only option in transfering was in the Liberal Arts program and not the Business School. They said he can still transfer but would have to compete with next year’s freshman class and transfer students. He wants to be an Actuarial but they said his course is not in the approved list hence he would need to compete. To top that off they said if he went the CAP program (which has certain requirement to transfer to UT after the first year 3.6 GPA) he would need to be adsolutely perfect more like a 4.0 to even be Considered to the business school. I’m old school so I find that a challenge but I won’t put that on my son while he is still getting acclimated to college life.

@alstro my daughter is in the same boat and it is really disheartening as a parent to watch her suffer through it. Last night she said “People keep telling me ‘You’ll get in’ and I feel like I should get in, but I am so afraid to say that out loud to anyone!” It is her #1 choice as well. Has been since 1st grade. But at this point, I wish they would just make a decision, either way, so we can move forward. Tom Petty was 100% correct, the waiting IS the hardest part!
