TAMU Class of 2023 - Admission Decisions/Discussion

And also what are they named?

@rynetexas0301 You should see Home, Applicant, My Howdy originally, then when 6 tabs, they add Student Life, My Finances and My Record, I think? It’s the maroon menu bar with white letters.

I wish all schools would do away with ranking and colleges would not judge off of this.
Just look at GPA, test scores, EC’s, and rec letters. All of these things should easily tell you all you need to know about the student.

@tdawns as long as the Top 10/6% rule is in place, they will have to use class rank. And for the student who might not test well, their class rank can possibly help redeem lower scores.
I am shocked at how many school districts across the state use different grading scales-our district is a 4.0, neighboring districts are 5.0 and 6.0 point scales. Makes no sense to me

@52AG82
I feel like all the rest of the things I listed would tell what they need to know. A rec letter could explain that. A GPA would say what a good student they are.

43,000 applicants
if each Application was only a single sheet of paper, stacked, it would reach more than 14 feet high. So when 1000+ applicants have a 3.8ish GPA, 1300ish SAT, good/great Rec letter, good/great EC’s, good/great essay’s, what’s a human Admin person do to. It all sounds daunting, even more so when you think these Admins do actually care about getting this right, or as right as humanly possible. There’s no way to “easily” tell one from another when soooooooooooo many are sooooooooo similar. We’re still in the boat with so many others but at least the shoreline is in sight.

@TXDad56 I agree, insanely daunting. However, if all that is left to offer review applicants is PSA and Denials, wouldn’t you agree that the daunting part is likely over? Especially when apps are reviewed multiple times?

Exactly! And there is so much more depth and complexity to students, much more so than stats can ever tell. Certainly, ECs, essays, rec letters, and counselor comments help to differentiate, but the wonderful complexity of students with their varied backgrounds and experiences makes it a very tough job to qualify, and to determine (with those limited tools, and the sheer number of qualified students, are more than can be enrolled) who to offer admission, alternatives to full admission, and redirection. The waiting is hard, but I’m sure they’re doing the best that they can. With so many more kids going to college today, compared to yesteryear, I think longer waits (as admissions teams get ever larger pools of applicants) is the new normal.

Best of luck to everyone still waiting.

From what we read here on CC, BLINN is coveted, Gateway is coveted. Until those have all been sussed, and I don’t think they have been, there is still wringing of hands in the Admin office. Then and only then will be the flood of PSAs and thanks but no thanks.

I agree that all of the applications they receive is daunting, but other schools are able to work through it in less time.
Our daughter was accepted to Purdue through the early application process. Don’t know how many apps they got this year, but last year it was over 53,000. If you apply early, you hear on January 15. I believe she sent her app mid-October. For regular decision, they roll out from 1/15-3/15. I don’t believe class rank is a huge factor for Purdue, they look more at your GPA and test scores. They look at each applicant holistically whether you are in state or out of state.

By contrast, my daughter applied to A&M on August 28 and she is still “in review”.

@thelma2 and @AggieMomhelp Just called TAMU admission ph line and the lady transferred me to the admission department. When asked if all the full admits, BLINN and gateway are full the gentlemen said yes, that is correct.
Any more coming out offers will be either other pathways or Denials, which will be more likely by this week.
VERY SAD.

If all decisions besides PSA and denials have been sent out what is taking them so long to release these.

It’s impossible to look at GPA for fairness in competitiveness. For instance my son took dual credit. It’s unweighted. Another school just down the street (different ISD) weights it at 6.0 vs. my son’s 4.0. So taking DC actually hurts your GPA. AP at our school was 5.0
 at the other school, 6.0. So a 4.0 that my son received is not a true assessment when comparing someone who had the exact same grades and classes at another school. Thus, ranking is the only way they deem appropriate.

How cool would it be to have a glimpse into the admissions office to see how people are assessed? I would actually pay for a tour of this. lol, but I’m weird like that.

@avvi thanks for posting this, but I wouldn’t put much stock into anything we hear from admissions office at this point. There is so much conflicting info. There will either be a wave or there won’t. I don’t mean that as a slight to you my friend, but as “some” pointed out
 we are not experts, any of us, on this thread.

@avvi I called today and the counselor told me that there still were full admits to be sent out

@AggieMomAgain Thank you. I really appreciate all your feedback and educated suggestion.

@nervoustamumommy where is it stated that only offers of PSA and denials remain? Until I see it in black and white from TAMU, I’m just not ready to accept rumor or speculation. The TAMU website clearly states the following “We make decisions throughout the year. All decisions for spring will be posted by December and fall by late March at HOWDY via the Applicant tab.” It’s late February so that means they are giving themselves another month to complete the daunting task of notifying all 43,000+ well deserving applicants.

Whatever magic admissions performs to make it all happen, I’m willing to wait because I know my son deserves a spot and it has been his dream his entire life! Will it happen for him? I hope and pray everyday it does. If it doesn’t, we have multiple back up plans in place. This forum has been a wealth of information. Some should only be taken with a grain of salt while other information is backed up by facts. We each have to decide what and who to believe. I chose hard facts.

Best of luck to all those waiting
I share your anxiety, frustration, excitement, hopes, fears, etc. I can’t remember the last good night of sleep I had! The end is in sight and no matter where we land, it’s the path intended.

@texag92
That’s how they do it at Baylor. My daughter found out on Halloween and here we still wait for TAMU.

@AggieMomhelp , my daughter also took dual credit, 15 hours worth. These are classes she would have taken as AP if she took them at her high school, and presumably would have increased her class rank. But, she wanted to take actual college courses and get that experience. My beef on class rank is that beyond auto-admits or academic admits, it should no longer be the main factor. They should actually do a holistic review if they are going to call it holistic.

Hi @tisulli people who received TEAM offers reported on this thread that some type of message popped up with the offer stating that all offers of full admissions have gone out. Many posts on this thread have also indicated that it would be rare to see anything but PSA at this point in the game. However, obviously nobody has any way of being 100% positive. I’m just going by what the message on the TEAM offers said (have not seen this myself, others on this thread have reported that’s what was on their AIS), and of course what others have said here. I would MUCH rather that NOT be the case as we too are still waiting on a decision. Thank you!

My two cents for what it is worth
 I would tend to believe the “Full” statement, but mostly for Business and Engineering majors. That seems, at least anecdotally to me, from reading this blog from the beginning where the focus of admissions has been. But other majors have been a lot sparser in rolling out admissions (although I know this blog is a small sample). For example, I have not seen a lot of COLA, Education or Ag admissions as examples. I know they have to be admitted to the University first, but you can’t build a well rounded University with only Business and Engineering majors albeit they probably have for the most part the best GPA’s, test scores and a ton of EC’s. They have to keep the other colleges growing too. At least that is what keeps my DD (COLA International Studies\Political Science, ACT 26 GPA 3.7 uw 2nd Q) and I checking everyday and reading this blog. So much more painful than DS class of 2021 Academic Admit.

I to cannot begin to tell the major contributors to this blog, with the fantastic information they have shared, how much I have appreciated them through this process!!! Thank You!!!
