TAMU Class of 2023 - Admission Decisions/Discussion

@Thelma2 So are you saying that A&M takes into consideration the competitiveness of high school in a hollistic review process? My high school is ranked #9 out of 1,624 best public high schools in texas and #7 of 1,298 best college public prep schools in texas. Wow! Now thats something to consider and I hope they do because thats the whole point of a hollistic review process to look at every factor including scores, rank, ec, rigor record, etc. It is only fair to everyone and the high-achieving students who come from competitive high schools.

@mrsqster Oh wow! indeed, inquiring minds want to know the wording and the particulars. Knowing that actual denials have been sent at this date is helpful to know. I don’t want to be insensitive in any way to their disappointment so if you think it best not to inquire, totally understand. If you think you could learn the specifics that would be so helpful.

My eldest was denied in fall 2014. He had applied at in the summer before Sr year and when he was seriously recruited to do a sport at a college in VA, we never sent his supporting documents in. I believe he did get a letter, as he never checked online portals.

@Thelma2 and @AggieMomhelp - God bless y’all. I see you here every day answering questions, ENCOURAGING parents and wannabe Aggies everyday. I’ve followed this thread since day one. And check it EVERY day. Multiple times a day. My son is still in review like many others realizes his chances at this point are pretty bleak (at least for full admit or TEAM). But @Thelma2 - I had a question for you. My son is a student at one of the Century Scholar schools. Do you know if being in one of those schools carries any weight in admission?
I know I’ve appreciated and learned so much from this forum and can’t imagine the hours that go into researching and answering questions. I’m on forums for other schools (on CC) and it’s verrryy quiet.

@Thelma2 - and I see where you tagged me in a post asking for my son’s stats.
GPA: 4.10; 3.6
Class Rank: 1Q
SAT: 1230
EC’s : Presidential Volunteer Service Award; owns and runs a business, student ambassador to Spain…

@Thelma2 - sorry forgot to add.
First choice: Mays, second choice: Ag Business
Applied: 10/04/2018

When he receives a decision I will update.

@sma1234 I said no such thing in my post. You read into my words things that I did not say.

I said that A&M has large programs for outreach and scholarships for, under-served areas of Texas, to first generation college applicants, and economic hardships applicants. I also said that there were 110 high schools across the state in a program affiliated with A&M, called Century Scholars…

Your competitive public prep school has resources and provides access to resources, tools, materials, teachers, field trips, and opportunities that some schools can only read about and will never first hand experience. you are compared to how you performed to the other students in your school with the same resources.

I think folks that may not be familiar with the history and culture of A&M struggle with understanding how A&M could offer one student over another with better stats. A&M is land grant university and began by offering technical and agricultural education to rural Texas. Farm boys if you will. Many came from poorer households and busted their tails to improve their lives. Up until the 1960’s Corps was mandatory and no women where allowed. The CTs (Corps Turds) would have to go to Stephen F Austin or Baylor for dates (which is one of the reasons that Baylor and A&M have been rivals). While I can’t provide demonstrable facts to back up this claim as some would like, I believe with all my heart that A&M, more than most universities look for those students who may not have the top scores, but have other intangible qualities such as determination, strong work ethic, sense of service to others and grit. In other words, A&M is looking for Aggies. It is a remarkable thing really when you think about it given how large the university is. Those things can’t be judged by scores alone, which is why the essays, letters of recommendation and extra curricular activities and volunteer service is considered. With so many applications it is a wonder they get them done this quickly. A review candidate may be reviewed 2 or 3 times. My son was a review candidate and was offered PSA or a chance to apply to the Engineering Academy (not Bryan). We waited until mid march for an answer. He chose the latter and is at Brenham. I am proud of my university and thankful they offer those kids a chance to be Aggies.

The bottom line is this. For those that are not offered admission and want to be an Aggie and get that ring, there is a path if you bust your tail to achieve that dream. A&M is not for everybody and that’s OK as some will move on to another university. As the saying goes, ā€œHighway 6 runs both ways.ā€

Gig’em.

God Bless all of you admins - I don’t envy your role but am thankful for each of you

Does anyone know the chances of a transfer student getting accepted if they meet the gpa and credit hour requirements?

@madeline116 it depends on the major. Meeting the bare minimums isn’t enough for most majors. For instance. 3.8 for business probably won’t get you into mays. A 2.5 in ag leadership probably will get accepted.

So I’ve been seeing a lot of posts on here about opportunities being bleak for TEAM or FULL admission. Does anyone know if all offers have been released yet ? Thank you !!

@madeline116 if you thinking about taking the transfer route I strongly recommend attending one of the transfer sessions at TAMU. http://admissions.tamu.edu/transfer/programs. The 2.5 is the bare minimum to be considered. many if not most majors require a higher minimum for consideration. Please note, consideration does not mean you get in. Each major has a transfer course sheet that details the classes you must take and GPA requirements for consideration. If you are looking for a guaranteed admission and your choice of major offers it, look at the PTA. http://admissions.tamu.edu/PTA. Regular transfer minimum requirements can be found here, http://admissions.tamu.edu/transfer/majors but please note this is a competitive transfer so you will be rated against other transfer applicants and put behind the PTA and PSA students.

Its also a good idea to call an advisor for your choice of major. They can tell you the avg GPA of past applicants who were admitted to give you an idea of what you need to do. Mays is almost impossible as they cap 100 transfers and routinely deny 4.0 GPAs.

Here are my stats. In reality and due to trends what could I get offered.
Class Rank: 102/275 37%
GPA: 3.8
ACT: 25
Major: geoscience
EC: 4year Band, UIL academics, science bowl, NHS

I will let you know what I get offered.

I’m not sure if anyone has asked this already or mentioned it, but has anyone heard about any students recieving gateway? Do y’all think there will be another wave of BLINN applicants as well?

Haven’t heard of anyone getting gateway yet on this thread.

@SAMomofOne I don’t know how much weight it carries in admissions as far as being a hook for all students. My best guess would be that each applicant from any school is measured with how they performed against their peers.

As far as whether how competitive schools are and if that is considered, I read somewhere (maybe the admissions officer on Texags) that the reason they do not factor in the competitiveness of a school is because students really do not have control over that. Some students are fortunate to go to highly rated private schools or the top rated public schools in the state. Other students live in areas where the schools may have more limited resources. They feel this has more to do with parental decisions and income and not the student themselves as most of them cannot decide where to live, etc. So they just look at how a student performs within their school against their peers.

A family friend of mine works as a business administrator at TAMU so I asked her when all admissions decisions should be sent out, she asked her friend high up in admissions who said there were still full admits, blinn etc to be given out on or before March 1st - If there are still full admits to be given out, why would previous blinn team offer students have received the message that full admissions were already full? And if they do plan on sending out a large wave of PSA (like UT CAP) I wonder what is holding them back from releasing those decisions.

@thelma2 and @AggieMomhelp My son is going to do the Blinn-Bryan route if he receives PSA. As such, I believe he is going to try the PTA route. So far, he has a 3.5 GPA for 18 hours of DC. He just needs to maintain that and take the required coursework for major. It is going to be a rigorous year but I don’t think it will get easier regardless. Anyway, I do have a question - we are going to meet with an admissions counselor on 3/9 (hopefully he has decision by then) to sign the ā€œcontractā€ and also going to ask why he didn’t ā€œscoreā€ high enough to receive Team or full admissions. I don’t think it would hurt to ask but he would like to know where he went wrong and if it was because he snafu’d his application (hit submit before completing all sections so it looks like he did half-a$$ job - as I have said before, in hindsight, we should have withdrawn application and resubmitted). Have you heard of anyone doing this? Asking why?

What color are the tabs that go from 3 to 6?
