@Musingalaxies did you get a response about submitting an excerpt? The shortest piece of writing I have done for a class is 1000 words yikes…
wait i didn’t get an email yet?
nevermind… just found it… rejected
Has anyone been contacted about an interview yet?
nope, not yet. also - does anyone have tips for when the interviewers grill us on our ideologies and try to catch us in a contradiction?
Former TASPer here from 2018 Cornell Tasp: The interviews are hard on purpose. They really try and dig into your thinking and can ask you questions that are so deep you may not have an answer for it on the spot or it would take you a long time to think of an answer. All I can say about these interviews, are that you can’t doubt yourself before, during or after the interview. It’s okay to be nervous, but don’t let that impact your responses. If you start to backtrack because you think they don’t like what you’re saying… DONT…they may be expressionless because they’re really trying to just understand you. It is a hard interview…and it should be! Mine lasted about an hour and a half hour or so. Be calm…stay collected… THEY CHOSE YOU for a reason!! They liked something in your application!
thanks so much for the advice @calendardates ! i’ll do my best to take it to heart before/during/after the interview. and good luck to every finalist, i wish us all the best !!!
I wanted to wait a bit before posting to welcome all the longtime lurkers and everyone who’s new to this thread, but congratulations to absolutely EVERYONE who applied, finalist or not! You all put it so much work, time, and effort, and I am so lucky to have met you all. It’s been amazing to have the opportunity to work with some of you and help you get through this process to finalist status.
But the journey isn’t over yet! For those of you who are finalists, my biggest piece of advice is to make sure to get everything in by the due date!! Some of what you have to send in relies on other people’s schedules, like your official transcripts, so make sure you know exactly what timelines you’re working with here. And for those of you who may not have made it to the next round, please don’t take this as anything more than it is - a rejection from a summer program that doesn’t define who you are as either a person or a writer. TASP is a wonderful experience, but you can still have wonderful experiences with summer research, jobs, or other camps and programs. Feel free to email me if you want to learn about the other opportunities that are out there (and that you can still apply to at this point)! And for my finalists out there, make sure you’re preparing for your interviews and also lining up a backup plan juuuust in case - TASP decisions tend to come out kind of late, so you don’t want to be stuck scrambling for something meaningful to do this summer. Again, I’m always happy to give advice on these kinds of things.
I am so, SO proud of every last one of you, and I was quite honestly bowled over by the talent I saw in the applications I helped you guys on. You guys are going places, and I’ll be here all throughout the interview process as well, so feel free to keep asking any questions you might have!
(also CC is glitching so it’s making me post a comment again - sorry about that!)
Hi! I am an international applicant who fortunately became a finalist. A couple days ago, I sent an email to telluride to clarify something about the rest of the application. But, as I was writing the email I accidentally pushed the “send” button before I had finished writing it. So, I sent an email that only included the words “ I am” and “Sent from my Iphone”. Telluride answered me practically immediately with only 2 question marks. I wanted to send an email as soon as possible. So, in my rush, I have not noticed that I made 2 orthographical errors.
Do you think my foolish actions will hurt my chances of getting accepted? I have been stressed out because of this for the last 4 days and I really need advice.
@Sleepyeyes I’m sure you’ll be fine! Just explain what happened in your interview in a joking manner and they won’t judge you. They already know you’re smart, and judging you based on your email isn’t fair.
@Sleepyeyes Don’t worry at all! This is definitely not going to make or break your application You can even send them another email explaining and laughing it off - they’ll understand!
@5toryt3ll3r thanks for all your kind words! what do you think is the most important piece of advice for TASP finalists awaiting an interview to keep in mind? and do you think we should very thoroughly go over our essays and book list, or simply have the general idea of what we wrote and be able to defend it?
also, all parts of our supplementary materials (writing sample, transcript, recommendation, seminar preference) are due april 1, right?
@parousia Oh my goodness you’re so welcome! I actually just uploaded my video for TASP finalists and my experience with the interview, so you can check it out here (since I’ve been asked to post it to this forum): https://youtu.be/QMP6b_g7zfQ Hopefully it’s helpful for all of you!
I would definitely be careful to know not only what you wrote down, but the contents themselves - I heard of a case in which someone listed Pale Fire by Nabokov, which turned out to be their interviewer’s favorite book, and they had an intense discussion about it, so it can really serve you well to at least go over Sparknotes beforehand for the book list. Due to length, your essays probably won’t be quiiiite so thematically complex, but who knows? I would make sure to know everything inside and out, just in case. And yup, everything should be due by the 1st!
Does anyone have advice for submitting a writing sample when I literally have no writings from class over the past year that are under 750 words? The only English class that I am in right now is discussion based and we only turn in major essays. Should I submit an excerpt?
^ @5toryt3ll3r , maybe you know something about this. Should I email TASP?
@rjscholar (and everyone who’s been asking about excerpts), I had the same issue when I was applying! Definitely email TASP - they let people both submit excerpts AND submit essays that are slightly over the word limit (up to ~1000 words). I had to do the same thing, and ended up submitting an excerpt from AP Lit. They’re totally fine with it, but do be sure to email beforehand to ask as a formality.
@5toryt3ll3r okay! I will do that. Thanks so much!
@rjscholar You’re welcome!!
