Maybe I’m wrong but a holiday weekend in a city seems to me to be a weekend where many locals are traveling to the beach or somewhere.
One of my kids lives in a big east coast city, holiday weekends are one of the best times to visit. We can find a parking space and eat at a favorite restaurant without a huge wait.
Also do we know that the taxpayers of NYC are paying for extra security? Is there a possibility that team Swift is paying?
The reality is that weddings of football players abound in the summer which is their off season. Taylor and Travis are getting married in the summer because that’s when he’s available. Any domicile that would have their wedding would be an inconvenience for locals. That’s the reality of being who they are.
I’ll add a rumor that I’ve heard. They actually got married on June 6 in Watch Hill. Fireworks were set off a private residence in the vicinity of her house. RI marriage licenses are not public so they were able to hide it.
They are. But then tourists come in to supplement the numbers.
But the reality is that regardless of what she does, or where, Swift haters will come from under their rocks to whine.
I’m far from a Swiftie - although I can’t deny her talent. And I’m certainly not a KC fan - but again, I can appreciate a great team. I do however, live in NYC, and I have zero issue with her having her festivities here.
Anytime there is any big event in any city, it’s a lot of disruption for the people who live and work there. And it also brings in money. Think World Cup, Super Bowl, March Madness Final Four or a big music event such as a Taylor Swift concert, etc.
Agree with @deb922 that anywhere a person of TS’s star power gets married is going to be a big thing and disruptive to the place it is held.
I’d rather be in NYC this weekend, than in DC…where roads and bridges are going to be so closed that EMS folks will have difficulty getting folks to a hospital in a timely fashion. And July 4 is one of THE busiest days for EMS and emergency rooms.
I wish this couple the best. And hope their wedding party is just terrific. I wonder what band they will have playing for the reception??
And there reportedly will be a number of artists in attendance - including Dua Lipa, Sabrina Carpenter, Benson Boone, Ed Sheeran, Sombr, and Camila Cabello - who may do a song or two.
I would not at all be surprised at this - and, totally fine! Have a small private ceremony and then a large one for all your loved ones and extended network.
Plenty of everyday people do this - official
Marriage small, bigger event latee
So NYC has been an absolute traffic and pedestrian disaster for the past month because of the Knicks win and the world cup and tomorrow will be the giant parade of ships in addition to an enormous firework display. We went from the upper west side to the theater district last weekend and it was walls of people. Tons of streets closed off for buses to the world cup and all of the NJ transit side of penn station closed for 4 hours for each game. Now this weekend we throw in 100 degree heat wave and the fact that most people use buses and trains to get to the hamptons, it is going to be an absolute disaster. So Manhattan is not cleared out for the weekend and this is definitely adding another layer to the chaos. There is going to be a ball drop in times square at the same time as this wedding tonight so I am guessing every NYC cop is working overtime tonight, hope they have plans on how to keep everyone cool.
I really couldn’t imagine otherwise. Good $ side gig for the city??
You know, I am not a New Yorker but in my city when it’s a holiday - and it’s ungodly hot - there is nothing I like better than staying put at home and having a holiday “staycation”!
That’s what I said upthread. Dua Lipa just did the same thing. If I were a celebrity and rich, that’s what I’d do – a big party with friends but a ceremony out of the public eye, which often means doing it well ahead of the big festivities.
I got skewered here previously when the engagement was announced because, while happy for them and any couple that gets engaged, its just not all that important to me in the scheme of things (though some happy news is always enjoyed in the face of other..). That said, this is interesting..
Me too. Unfortunately, the grid in NYC is being stretched with this weather, due to an aging infrastructure, and the mayor has asked everyone who has a/c to keep their thermostats set at 78 or higher, which is a bit on the toasty side.
That is unfortunate but something that cannot be planned for ahead of time - 100 degree temperatures aren’t unheard of but not typical for early July??
That’s wonderful. As a life-long NYC resident and taxpayer who accepts that one of the many facts of life here is putting up with myriad inconveniences, this is beyond the pale. The World Cup and the America 250 celebrations are enormous events that have been scheduled for years. The NYPD is already stretched providing security for these public events, which are bringing millions of dollars to the city. If they couldn’t wait until these events were finished, there are other arena options.
I was supposed to fly into NYC on July 4th and got a message from my airline offering free flight changes due to significant airspace restrictions expected in NYC on the 4th. I’m a frequent flyer and have never seen a message like this.
Frankly, I don’t understand why anyone would want to get married in Manhattan in July. It is generally unbearably hot, humid and smelly.
