Teach For America 2012 Corps

I’ve slept easy these past few nights knowing that our fates have already been decided. It’s completely out of our hands now and all that’s left to do is see which email we get tomorrow. It’s nerve-wracking for sure, but it’s also nice to know that all of the waiting will be over so soon.

@satelle- I was waitlisted last year and seriously re-checked a thousand times to see if my status would ever change. Like you, I needed to find out a bit early because of other job opps. It will change whenever your official notification date will be. Good luck guys!

And honestly, as a person who has had a year long road…I’d suggest reapplying next year. I know that TFA has a rubric as to how they score you on your interview and it really does depend on what they say on their website. For me, I felt that I didn’t have as strong leadership things on my resume, and perhaps could have been accepted on the spot the first time had it been stronger. That being said, it’s given me time to re-examine whether I want to do this and I’m happy to say I’m looking forward to the next 2 years.

Let me know if any one has questions regarding the waitlist & rejection.

icebreaker8, i forgot all about the waitlist, so you had to reapply? do you know why you were waitlisted?

hi…yes…oh the waitlist. no there’s 2 types of waitlisted “recommended for acceptance” and “recommended for the waitlist” i forget which one I fell under/ if that’s there names. But basically there’s a distinction between the 2. As you can guess, the one that’s better to be on is the recommended for acceptance.

They gave us waitlisters who didn’t get a placement last year the option to apply through an “abbreviated reapplication process.” That’s an interesting phase- you are asked to submit an updated transcript/resume/ and answer 2 essay questions. If they know enough, they’ll accept you on the spot and not put you through the ringer of interviewing again. If they need to know more, they’ll give you a phone interview. Luckily, I submitted my essay and was accepted 2 days later.

As for the “why” the email wasn’t very clear, just that if we wanted to reapply make sure we do specific things to strengthen your application. If you think it’d be helpful, I could dig up the message and send you the email that I received. I think waitlist is also very dependent on where your preferred placements are. I think that’s the only category in which it bears any meaning. As suggested before other users, I know admissions doesn’t even look at where you want to be when deciding to be accepted or not. When you are, it goes to the regional placement office where they decide based on your experiences & qualifications you should be placed. So if you’re on the cusp, you can imagine how important your preferred regions are in areas that are super high need & have slots to fill. The people who were waitlisted last year, ironically were given NYC spots… there was something that opened up in budgeting that allowed for extra space.

This is just a specific case and does not, at all, speak to what will happen this year or the years to come. But I hope that’s helpful! And as always, if anyone has questions or wants to chat feel free to chat. :)

Again, good luck everyone! This is exciting!!

Howdy Folks,

I was accepted during the first deadline and I remember how nerve-wracking and slow this time felt in November. I just want to wish all of you the best of luck and to those of you who are not accepted, I hope you consider other ways to help close the achievement gap!

Thinking good thoughts for everyone!

I just got notified that I was accepted to the 2012 TFA Corp!!! The email said I was receiving notification early and would not know placement details until tomorrow night!!!

Awesome! Congrats plb!

Congrats plb!!! :-)

Thank you!! I had originally applied for early notification but there was a problem with a missing transcript. I was notified last Thursday that I would not be eligible for an early decision so this is totally unexpected.

congrats plb!! now you can relax, as for the rest of us…one more day lol

and thanks for breaking down the waitlists icebreaker

Woohoo!!! Congratulations!

I’m still sitting on pins and needles… trying really hard to focus on other school work and such!

plb that really is fantastic news. A big congratulations. With that said, it just befuddles me that if TFA is able to inform you like… 32 hours before actual decisions… Why can’t it just do the same for all of us? I’m sure 100% of applicants would be totally fine learning if they got accepted, and then having to wait a few extra days. It just seems sort of silly to me. But again, lets not steal from your big moment, congratulations!

@lurker, thank you. With all respect to the other applicants, I had applied for early notification because I met the criteria to do so. My husband is a 100% disabled veteran and I needed to make arrangements for his medical care while I am at summer institute. I apologize to everyone if my post was upsetting to anyone. This forum has been incredibly supportive and I chose to share the good news with colleagues that are just as invested in the program as I am.

I am sure you will all be receiving great news tomorrow.

YAY congrats plb675! I’m so happy for you. You totally deserve it :)

Thanks Cali!

Also, since tomorrow is the big day and people who are already accepted will find out their placements, I’m going to post this format again! I’m so excited for everyone :)

Accepted/Rejected
Final Interview date
Applied for transitional funding? (Yes/No)
If yes, was there a change to Complete (if there was, list the date when the changes occurred)
If accepted, also post the region you were assigned to and grade level/subject you’ll be teaching

Congrats PLB, I knew you’d get it! Wooohooo 1 down and a ton to go!!!

I just wanted to wish all of you good luck and calm nerves until tomorrow! I hope you all get good news!

Thanks chikvicious8! Great to see you here again. I wish we had our own 4DL thread so we can all keep in touch

plb you sound like you really deserve tfa! many congrats to you and i wish you all the best!

i’m dreading tomorrow… i think i’m going to go do a couple job apps this evening. if i get rejected, at least i’ll be waiting on some more stuff. but it’s been a long 6 months of apps and rejections and i would love for it to end.
