Teach For America 2013 Corps

@TFAPHILLY Yeah, the exam was really weird. I was surprised to get the email today!

@taffiedog10 Haha, it’s probably a good thing because then you won’t be making yourself crazy like the rest of us!!

this deadline just sucks…what were we thinking?

Hey guys! I’ve been lurking but have finally got some good news!

I applied for 3DL and had my final interview on the 4th. It went pretty well, I think. Our interview group was only 6 people–4 females, 2 males. My last name starts with an H.

Anyway, to add to the data pool, my TF status just changed to “Complete” today and both of my documents say “YES” under the verified column.

@Senioritis Thank you for the encouragement!!! I am just in desperate need of this job because I have wanted it so bad for a few years now, and I think I got my hopes up really high this year =) Either way it is true, whatever it meant to be will

in reference to an earlier post that mentioned that the interviewers decide that night if you are in or not, can anyone really confirm that? i didn’t know our interviewers were the ones that decided. definitely curious!

if thats true, my interviewer said in reference to one of my experiences… “yes, and that is one of the best experiences you could have, and that will show when you meet your students.” i have been overthinking this comment so much. like she could have just been saying that out of context or just to be nice. did anyone else receive subtle hints like that during their interview?

I thought I was receiving hints, but I could be reading too much into it. I got constant positive feedback from my interviewer. Nothing during it left me thinking anything but good. But, it can always go either way, it is one of those who knows things I guess. If they do have the final decision I really hoped she liked me and did not just pretend lol. My interviewer did make a comment about how they submit their recommendations. Whatever that means.

I thought they take everything into consideration, even your references. The references were not due until the 3rd at 6pm. Could they really go through all of that information so quickly?

@lea Yeah, I’m not sure it’s true that they decide that exact night. I don’t think it’s up to the interviewers to decide, and I’ve heard that they give you a number and anyone who has a number that meets their standards, or is in the top whatever percent gets in. I don’t think they could do that without interviewing everyone first.

And no problem on the encouragement! It’s good positive reinforcement for myself, too. Oh, and just so you know, I looked at this thread and last years’ and lots and lots of peoples TF didn’t change for a long time. So don’t worry about that!

I’ve heard the same thing, Senioritis–I think the reason they take such obsessive notes is that multiple other people read the transcripts and weigh in somehow as well!

I keep trying to tell myself that if I don’t get in then I can still become a teacher a traditional way to make change. But then I remember what my interviewer said and thats that TFA is not for teachers it’s for people who want to join a movement. And I want to join now!!

Notification in T minus 25 days.

@matt And boy are their notes obsessive. It’s so weird to be interviewing with someone who’s looking at a computer the whole time!! That was a new experience, someone writing down pretty much everything I say as I say it.

So I have this theory that the document reviewing has more to do with the type of documents you had to submit than anything else. I’m thinking there is just a strange correlation with people getting a status change and getting accepted here on this particular forum because most of the people this obsessed with TFA are actually really passionate and qualified for it. :P

Hmm what do you mean the type of documents you had to submit?

All I had to submit was my FAFSA SAR and a screenshot of my student loan balance. These two things are federal proof and can be verified easily. I think other documents (credit card debt, tax returns) take a little more work and lead to the TF status changing later than other documents.

Oh gotcha…I did screenshots of savings/checking accounts, stock fund, and tax return if that helps your theory haha

Gosh. At this point I guess it’s just anyone’s guess.

January 7th seems extremely far away…

As I’m sure many of you have read these, what is everyone’s opinion on articles like this one?

http://garyrubinstein.teachforus.org/2011/10/31/why-i-did-tfa-and-why-you-shouldnt/

I feel like they have some substance. Ever since I’ve started considering TFA I’ve been watching countless videos and documentaries about education and how to teach kids, and then I hear about TFA Institute and its methods.

The one article we had to read about assessing student success seems like a step in the right direction. I was a little worried that TFA might be one of those driving forces that emphasize standardized test scores and consider them the epitome of measuring student success.

I do have to say one thing: if I am admitted to TFA, I’ll drink the punch, but I’ll be damned to implement bad teaching methods at the cost of sacrificing the well-being of my students.

Do you guys think this semester’s grades will matter at all? I’m not doing so hot and I wouldn’t want to get fired before even starting…haha

Don’t think grades matter. As long as you have the required cumulative GPA at graduation you will be fine.

Ah thanks for the reassurance crazygolfer haha

I’ve had a dream for the last 3 nights that I receive an email saying that I have been accepted into the Dallas corps. I want to cry everytime I wake up.

Nooo haha do you want to cry because you don’t want Dallas? Or because you do?
