Teacher not updating grades

On powerschool, grades for my Bio class have not been updated since April. We have done several assignments since then including stuff that is weighted heavily and could make a big difference in our current grades. This in includes multiple tests, quizzes and labs. Online, the teacher mentioned that she finally graded everything and would have a progress report ready but there is no change in the grades on powerschool. When students approached her about this the general response was that she was busy, didn’t have time to answer questions, etc. Some of us didn’t even know if we have to take the final because our grades haven’t been updated for so long. This is not the first time this teacher has been behind in grading. She usually does it last minute, or even after the deadline. But now we’re grinding down to the last few days of school and some of us would really like to know where we stand in this course. We are on exam schedule meaning the schedule doesn’t result in you going to each class everyday. I have to go back to school sometime next week. How should I go about speaking to this teacher, or anyone about grades for the class?

help

Get thee to a guidance counselor in confidence. Said counselor should know a way to get some motion.

You could do as JustOneDad suggested, or you could approach the teacher (courteously!) asking for your current grade and more importantly, why you want/need to know it.

This will likely happen in college too - exams/HW are often graded by TAs or other students who did very well in the course (I was a grader last year, in fact), and many of them are busy students too. I recently took a seminar class where we had no idea what our grade was or what the grading cutoffs were - those were usually determined at the very end.

I will try to speak to her kindly about it. If I can’t contact her in person, I’ll speak to guidance. Do whatever it takes for a response. I don’t want to make a big deal out of it but teacher’s kind of lazy and it’s getting old.

Is it too much for me to be worried that my counselor might think negatively of me if I speak out on this? I’m going to be a senior next year but I feel like I need to stop being passive and stand up for the grade I put a lot of time and effort into earning.

We were supposed to have our final a week ago. But again, barely any updates

My college calc class first semester didn’t have any grades in until the final was over. Had no idea what kind of grade I was going to get until it was put on the final grade report.

Do you mean to say that you didn’t take the final? You “were supposed to have it”??

@bodangles the day we were scheduled to take the final for that class period has passed. However we didn’t receive any definite updates about what to do even after contacting the teacher.

Did you purposefully not go? Or did you show up and nothing happened?

@bodangles I stopped by that morning and she wasn’t there. No update left from a sub. Returned some books and went home

So did no one take the final?

I feel like I’m being interrogated. :expressionless:
I’ll just speak to someone when I get back to school. Thanks for the help.

LOL, okay dude.

If there was any doubt about whether I had to take a final, I would have made sure to be there an hour early, looking for every possible person of authority to ask about my problem, just in case. If nobody went to the final thanks to this grading fiasco, that’s different. But your reluctance to answer sounds like other people managed it. If your response to “Do I have to take this final?” was “I took a perfunctory look around and that’s good enough for me,” that’s kind of on you. :stuck_out_tongue:
