How competitive is the teaching field in your area? I live in a rural area where the schools are all rather small (ie avg of 150ish students per graduating class). The teaching field is one of the most competitive in the area. All the prospective teachers with whom I’ve spoken have said that there are usually 100+ applicants per one opening. My high school also sends about 25% of its graduates to college to become teachers.

Is it like this everywhere? I’ve heard some things about a shortage of teachers, but it’s obviously not happening where I live.

i live in a small town and the teaching area is not very competetive because we can’t keep a sophomore english teacher or an eigth grade science teacher, there always sees to be jobs

wow, my school would accept ANYONE as a teacher. major shortage of teachers.

My district, as far as I know, doesn’t have competition for teachers. My school, which is not in my district, is laying off teachers and most likely not accepting new ones, so there couldn’t be competition even if people wanted to teach there.

It’s the complete opposite around here. It seems like they’re talking about a shortage of teachers every other day on the news. There are even special programs in effect at most state universities for students to become teachers with minimal requirements, and I think there is a magnet high school or two with a teaching academy.

One news story that I heard a while back was that they were building a housing complex just for teachers and their families.
