#TEAMUCDavis2012 Acceptance Thread

@uchappytrain

what was the problem? how did they solve it? I’m having the same problem as you.

well, no but I misunderstood it. the 3800 is self help, such as outside scholarships not out of pocket. The woman I spoke to basically said If I don’t get any outside help most of it will be waived, and I can take out a slightly larger loan to cover the rest.

@internetaffairs They labeled me as a commuter when I indicated on my FAFSA that I would be living on campus. I called them about it, they never changed it. Then last night I sent a threatening email saying I would cancel my SIR and attend another university if they didn’t fix it and this morning I woke up to a much larger financial aid package. ahhah :)

@uchappytrain
fantastic! that is so messed up how they list that. what a relief anyway.

ahh. I see. I also have that 3800 self help thing in my favorite financial aid package, but everything else is paid for.

did the lady say how the 3800 would be covered if you don’t have a scholarship? what did she mean by waived?

how will the 3800 affect housing transfer students?!?

I think she meant it would be covered by additional grants or scholarships from UCD, and we definitely do not have to pay it up front out of pocket.

@uchappytrain-how did you know that uc davis labeled you as a commuter, was it because the estimated living expense was low?

@steveolopb yes, they had my estimated living expenses at around 9,000 & now that they’ve changed it my estimated living expenses are ~14,000. And they gave me a 17k grant instead of… whatever it was before lol I don’t remember how much but it was lower.

yeah I’m kinda of confused now since I’m looking over again on my financial aid package, got the 3,800 too, wait not to be stupid or anything, is the remaining cost (0.00 for me) means that you don’t pay anything? what about tuition?

@fredfrep as long as your remaining cost is 0, you should not have to pay anything out of pocket. tuition will be covered by B&G. you don’t have to do anything

well, tuition may be covered by blue and gold. but the financial aid letter reads that we are expected to cover that 3800 for living expenses and places that sum in a spot that does not allow us to take loan money for it. so @fredfrep call the school and clear that up before you SIR. it is great that they told UCHappytrain that they would allow him to take loans for that money, but if i were you, i would call and make sure that they will do the same for you.

technically a Zero in the bottom row just means that their office is satisfied with the arrangement, but above it states that You the student will be putting in 3800. none of the other UC schools that sent me award letters did this. you just need to make sure that they will approve your loans.

Yeah, it was kind of disappointing to first be like, “Wow! 0 remaining cost! I’m going for free!” and then see that I had a ~$4500 “self help contribution” even though I have an EFC of 0. :/

@acuvue
yeah, what a killjoy. anyway, uchappytrain called and they are taking care of it for him. so there is hope. but it was quite the stresser when i saw it.

@northbeach i’m a girl! haha. Yeah when I called I asked if the 3800 was to be paid out of pocket, and they said no. It is supposed to be from outside scholarships, but if I do not receive any scholarships then some it will be waived and some covered by loans

@uchappytrain
dudette–that is great. and lame of davis (sorry) just adds anxiety for students. i mean who exactly arrives with 3800 in scholarships? not very many people and that is a strange assumption that none of the other UC’s seem to be making. oh, and acuvue is supposed to arrive with 4200? haha

and I like the UCD financial aid package. compared to UCR’s and UCSC’s its much better.
I remember they also told me (UCD) that the 3800 could also include work study, although UCD discourages work study because they want their new students to get transitioned first and focus on their studies. And they also didn’t offer me a parent loan, which to me is great. I can’t believe UCR and UCSC are expecting my parents to take out a loan to pay for my education. I had to go to court with my mom this morning because she is being sued by credit card companies! She can in no way take out a loan for me, it’s impossible. So If I went to UCR or UCSC I would have to come up with that money (the expected parent loan contribution) by myself.

But basically by going there, I’m only going to take out one loan for 5,500. If I went to UCR or UCSC they expect me to take out multiple loans for nearly 8,000.

My best advice is to try to get a summer job, which is what I am going to do. Try to save up that 3800 or more to prepare for it.

That way we get only a small loan for 5,500 and if we find a job while we are studying at UCD (not work study, a legit job outside of school) we can pay that 5,500 loan before we graduate.

EDIT* Also , my community college is offering a 500 dollar scholarship for transferring students who can prove financial need. I plan on filling out the application today :slight_smile: You just have to look around, there are always things out there that can help you.

^ there are things out there to help you if you are a californian. gawd help kids who live outside of this state, and pretty much outside of the UC system. remember it is the UC schools that offer blue and gold and that is a new program. state schools kids do not get that money. congrats on davis. a great school.

seriously. And most kids out there don’t even know what is out there to help them. I was telling my friend in my spanish class about all the UC’s I have been admitted to and all the financial aid they are offering. She only applied to one state school and was accepted. She didn’t even think she could get into the UC’s (and we have the same GPA) so that’s why she didn’t apply. Then I told her about TAG and she was like man, I wish I would have met you a year ago. I feel bad for all the student out there who aren’t taking advantage of all the great opportunities out there for us californians.

@uchappytrain Definitely agree with you! So are you set on going to davis? Will you be dorming? I will be dorming there as a transfer for fall so hopefully we will meet on the other side! haha

@purplehaze yeah i’m deff going I submitted SIR and everything & i’ll be dorming in the residency halls. I got a double room so hopefully I don’t get stuck with a bad roommate :confused: if you have facebook you should join the uc davis transfer class of 2014 group!
