I’m sort of surprised how many of you have long hair - shoulder or longer. Nothing wrong with it, just when I think of people I know in our age group, most have short!
I’ll also admit that my thick and curly hair spends A LOT of time in a stretchy wide headband. A headband is like a comfort object to me!
Oh I don’t think it’s an age thing or should be. No one is telling me what I should wear or how I “should” look. I’m just surprised how many have chosen long. Both short and long can be stylish, modern, desired!
Bob with bangs. Starts shorter (chin length) and sometimes grows past my shoulder, at which point I usually get it cut.
Do you wear it the same way everyday or mix it up?
Mainly the same way. My hair has some wave to it, but I blow it dry and straight with a dryer/volumizer and touch up with a flat iron if needed. I have some barrettes but I never remember to use them.
Do you color it?
Yes - started in my mid-50s, coloring it my [previous] natural color. It has more and more white but I’m not ready to go there.
How long have/do you wear it in a particular length or style?
First started wearing it this way in 1982 (I was in college). Cut it VERY short when I was a new mom because my daughter pulled on it. Grew it out when the kids were a bit older. About a decade ago spent a year growing out my bangs; wore it that way for a year, then decided I prefer bangs.
Do you follow trends or stick to what works for you?
Do NOT follow trends - a few times I’ve tried to make it more modern by bringing in photos of age-appropriate celebrities to copy, and I’m usually not thrilled by the results. I get a lot of compliments on my hair.
This is me. My hair is thick, and it’s wavy, straight, and curly with a number of cowlicks. It requires serious blow drying and straightening after washing. I usually wear it like this or pulled back in a pony.
I have had my hair colored for years. I would love to go natural but with a fair complexion and yellow undertones, it would wash me out.
Wore my hair short for a few years in college and it looked good, but I got tired of it. Several years ago I had it cut short and the multiple textures were too difficult to deal with. So it’s not getting any shorter.
I’m thankful my hair is thick, but it’s a lot of maintenance.
Reading people’s posts reminds me…
I was playing indoor pickleball today, and there was a woman who clearly worked hard to get her “bouffant” hairdo. You know, like in the 70s, maybe 60s?
I definitely think it used to be an age thing. When my mom was 50+, all the women I knew her age had that short permed style. It seems so many the same exact look.
Now, everyone wears what suits their personality, height, face shape, etc. I think it’s great!
A woman I know as a nodding acquaintance, who is probably in her mid-70’s, actually stopped me when I was taking a walk & told me that I should be wearing my hair in a bob. I was pretty taken aback, but I managed to say “thank you, but I like my hair the way it is.” It was so weird! Why on earth would any woman think another woman - who isn’t even a friend - wants her unsolicited opinion about something as personal as her hair?
When I was growing up my mom used to comment on older women who still had long hair. Things have changed and many of my friends still wear their hair long.
My hair was stick straight and thin till I had kids. It stayed stick straight but was thick. With menopause it became more puffy. I now get it textured to thin it out. I’ve worn it long since junior high. Bangs off and on but no bangs in the last 20 years. I get it colored every four weeks and cut a few times a year. When I cut I usually go 3 or 4 inches past my shoulders. I let it grow till it begins to drive me crazy. I’m guilty of most of the time it’s in a ponytail or a messy bun. I love the five days after I get it colored as my stylist does a great blow dry and I wear it down.
Almost all of my mid-50’s friends have shoulder-length hair or longer. Mine is slightly below my shoulders. It grows very slowly so I’m reluctant to do more than a very slight trim, once a year. I look terrible with short hair, and I also don’t like my hair all the way up because I feel bald I do like a half-up/half-down style on me.
I have a very weird texture to my hair - the underneath part in the back has an aggressive wave to it but the rest of my hair is straight. I end up curling it most days instead of trying to battle the waves in the back. I have it highlighted. I envy those who have gone totally gray. I don’t know what my gray looks like - whether its salt & pepper, silver, white, etc. I have a friend who has the silver-y white hair, and it looks beautiful on her.
So glad to hear about other ladies keeping their hair long! Mine requires a fair bit of $ and time - color every 8 weeks, highlights/lowlights a few times a year. Fortunately I go to my stylists’ houses for color and cut so not as pricey as a salon.
I now use expensive shampoo/conditioner (Olaplex) to try and maintain health/limit frizz. More $$!
My hair was super thick my whole life but has thinned about 1/3 in recent years. It’s still dry so only wash once a week (bonus).
I have a hair appointment this afternoon, thank goodness. I have a LOT of hair, and it grows very quickly for some reason. I need about 3 inches cut off to get to my chin length bob haircut. I’ll get pictures once it’s done.
I have a blunt bob hair style with bangs. The length is just right below my chin. I’ve had this cut since my 20s. I have very straight shinning hair (one of my nicest features). It doesn’t take much care, just wash and blow dry for 5 min. The down side with my hair is that it requires precision cut because it is so straight. I have been going to the same hairdresser for 30+ years. She used to spend 30 min just to trim my hair to make no strand was sticking out (that was after she had finished cutting my hair). She can do it in 5 min now. I color my hair every 4-6 weeks to keep it shining. I color my hair in between my cuts.
