He claimed it for the team in writing in November, even when polls counted them out. As a captain, he’s helped change team culture for the better. It all came to fruition yesterday, winning a league championship the program hasn’t seen in 14 years. He is not the star by any means but he has certainly done his part. So proud of this kid and this team!!
College sophomore D had a great semester! She has received small merit scholarships from all three of her major depts., in addition to her full-tuition university scholarship.
On a whim she entered a design for a product–she just found out that it is going to be produced/she’ll get paid for it. She also won prizes in two other contests she entered this semester. D has had some challenges the last few years, which makes this “winning streak” even sweeter. Gratifying to finally see her hard work pay off.
I quit my job!!! (Really, this time - I did it twice in October but got talked into staying both times.) I am not ready to retire, but I am so very done with this all-consuming job of mine. I like it in so many ways, but it’s way too much for one person. After almost 7 years, I am just burned out. I will stay on through the end of June, then take my vacation pay-out & be on my merry way. Excited to find out what’s next for me!
A hummingbird built a nest on the edge of a hanging light fixture just outside one of the doors, hatched 2 babies and dutifully took care of them until they flew the next a couple of months ago. They made a complete mess of the fixture and the brick below, but I didn’t mind.
Mom seemed completely unafraid of humans. Opening the door, people walking in and out, or just standing 2 feet away and staring didn’t bother her. It was fun to watch the process from where you could first see their beaks sticking out to when they’d gotten so big they could barely both fit in the tiny nest, and I was sad to see the second one go a full 2 days after the first.
I cleaned the fixture right away, but was careful to leave the nest intact and not get any cleaner on it. I’d read they rarely come back and use the same nest, but it was the most perfectly cylindrical nest I’d ever seen and looked as if it has been made from a mold. I liked seeing this marvel of nature, so I left it.
Late Saturday afternoon, I saw a hummingbird buzzing around, opened the door, and there it was sitting on the nest. No way of knowing if it’s the same mom, but I’m guessing it is, and just in time for Mother’s Day. Again, coming in and out or just standing there doesn’t seem to bother it, so we’ve had a few conversations already. With any luck, I’ll be seeing a couple of babies in a few weeks and the fixture will be covered with yuck again.
I am so glad we have a spare bedroom down the hall, you were snoring so loudly last night that even your dog joined me there
I have a job interview today!
I don’t know how this happened but my school’s out a week earlier than I thought! But now I’m stressing about all of the test I have to grade and work I have to wrap up before then.
Moving to this climate has allowed DW to finally pursue gardening, which has been good on so many levels. Tasty food that’s basically free, beautiful grounds, healthy activity, a sense of accomplishment. I had no idea there was so much to learn about gardening, and I’m very happy she’s found this passion.
After an arduous journey, we finally closed on selling our house this morning. What a relief!
My sister graduated with her master’s in education, got a wonderful job at the college she just graduated from, and got engaged to one of the most wonderful people I have met.
I no longer have a place here. My third son graduated from Georgetown U. today with an MBA. Three sons. Three Masters degrees. No one left in college.
My kids finished college in 2010 & 2013. I still love the folks posting here and love that many others continue long after their kids have graduated as well.
I have a new phone. And it was half of what I thought it would be. Need to get a new computer next week.
Zooming right into the 21st century.
@VaBluebird - congrats to your son. Just hang around, in no time your grandkids will start their college search!
I just saw an ad for 99 cent pancakes at IHOP!!! Life is good
@VaBluebird, the Cafe has no familial college attendance requirements. Stick around for the company.
Was just asked and agreed to be a keynote speaker for an event in November at a national conference. It is an honor and privilege to support this excellent group.
I’ve been visiting S2 and DIL since Thursday. DIL has made me feel wonderfully useful: She just bought herself a sweing machine and wanted to learn how to sew, so she asked me to show her. I have done a lot of sewing in my life. We went to Jo Ann’s Fabric Shop, picked out the pattern, the fabric, zipper, thread, etc., and I’ve been taking her through the nuts and bolts of it all. She now knows how to select a pattern, read the pattern, follow the instructions, sew seams, and so forth. She’s not too happy with her skill so far but I keep reminding her that you don’t get good at something right away. It’s been wonderful bonding with her over this project, and it’s made me feel wonderfully useful!!
I always wanted to be able to teach a daughter to sew, but a DIL is just as good.
I had a lovely mini vacation with my boyfriend this past weekend.
something i liked tonight at kid’s HS soccer banquet.
the Coaches’ choice MVP award (well deserved) went to a kid who works 20+ hrs a week; is from another country and has been in the US 2 years; and has only played organized soccer 2 yrs. His parents never came to any games; he didn’t grow up playing club with pizza parties and out of town tournaments; but just played his heart out and was top scorer.
I liked how he sheepishly smiled when his name was announced. The other boys were very genuinely happy for him. I don’t think he’s had many “warm fuzzies” over the years, but this was a big one, in front of peers and their parents.
