Today my husband and I were the recipient of a random act of kindness. We were waiting on line in Walmart with one single item - a $4 jar of jelly. The woman in front of us had a pretty fill cart. After the cashier started ringing her up, she turned and saw us and apologized for not letting us go ahead of her saying she had not noticed we had only one item. She then proceeded to pay for our one jar of jelly, along with her groceries (we asked her not to but she insisted.)
His case was clear. Less than two years since wife passed, less than $500k gain.
So glad you were able to help.
I’m so pleased with how much knowledge I learn on this site about just almost anything and everything. Not sure if that was the case here. But this forum is definitely a treasure chest of information.
We went to brunch today and they had a special, 10 ounce prime rib and eggs with toast and hash browns for $23. Pretty good deal.
Then, when the waitress asked how I’d like my eggs, I joked Benedict.
She replied “I can almost do that. I’ll have them poach your eggs.”
But that wasn’t all. She substituted English muffins for toast, put thin slices of prime rib on it, then the poached eggs, and served it with a complimentary side of hollandaise sauce.
So for $23 I got prime rib eggs Benedict and an 8 ounce slice of prime rib to take home.
It’s like the old credit card commercial.
Breakfast - $23
Tip - 30%
Waitress’ attitude - Priceless
I just watched the video of Brandi Carlile and Sista Strings performing America the Beautiful for the Disney 250th special. It is incredibly moving.
Minor things, but made me smile…
Older S/DIL1 had their wedding featured in an online wedding publication. I love looking at their pictures again and again. They were so happy and joyful, and everything was picture perfect.
FDIL2 works in cancer research at a University Hospital system. She was the only one in her group to receive an “exceeds expectations” on her annual review. She is such a sweet and kind person and always wants to do the right thing. If you have to go through cancer treatments, she is a person you would want to interact with. I am so very proud of her and happy that her managers appreciate her.
The other day, I noticed some rubber hanging down from the dishwasher. Not sure why I didn’t notice it earlier but I looked closer and realized that a piece under the dishwasher had broken. I searched the web and found out it’s a common issue and can easily be remedied. I ordered the correct replacement part locally and they had the part come in from WA and then I had to pick it up. I saw several videos about how to remove old part and install the new one. Several had people REMOVING the door while others said all you had to do was remove two screws and the kickplate and peel off the broken rubber sound insulator and peel the backing off the new piece and stick it firmly in place, replace the screws & put kickplate back where it belonged. Voila, saved $$$ from appliance repair person! Seems to work just right!
DIY appliance repairs is the best part of the internet - easy to see what parts you need, easy to find and order the parts, and easy to find a video showing you how to do the repair.
We have DIY fixed - an electric oven (coil), a refrigerator ice maker (this one was hard - some crazy screws were involved), a Webber gas BBQ starter, and a dishwasher (I think it was the soap dispenser). Each time my husband did one of these, he felt like a hero!
Same here … switch in microwave door, gas stove igniter, malfunctioning in-door refrigerator ice maker among other things … all easily and inexpensively fixed thanks to the internet.
Today, I got a phone call from a radio station about our 20th anniversary event, which is free & open to the public. They’ll add it to the PSA lineup and maybe add us to a morning show closer to the event so folks will register & attend. Best of all, you didn’t ask for $$$ for advertising.
Also got an email from a student group who wants to have a lung cancer screening table and I sent them more info.
I’ve been inspired by these brief successes to update all my ancient news listings (sadly some are from 2014 and places have gone out of business & reporters have moved). Now I’m going to send these press releases out and follow up with phone calls. I’m excited people are interested in our free event!
I was dreading having to go to the DMV today because although one can renew a registration online, I moved (just a few miles) and now live in a different county. I decided to check to see if I could renew online anyway and found out I could. I had to credit an account (of course) with the DMV, with a 14 character password (really? who wants to log into the DMV as me?) and then change my address on my license (that’s a state function) and then my registration (that’s a county function). Now I have to wait 1 business day for the change to process and the new amount (every county charges a different amount) to post and I can pay online.
Still took me more than an hour to do all that but at least I didn’t have to go to the DMV in the 95+ heat.
Just discovered this clip, brother sharing baseball.
After 4 months of searching, applying, interviewing, being ghosted…my D20 has landed her first official lsw/msw job!
D’s good friend rang the bell today … cancer-free after battling a rare, aggressive cancer for the past nine months! ![]()
YES - I got the kids tickets to be able to hike in Oregon! Had to be ready at exactly 7 AM Pacific time. The first day son didn’t tell me WHICH hike he wanted to do, so I didn’t get them in time. But I was ready today!
The “kids” made their (very tight) connection and they will arrive home tonight! That means we will be “down” 2 cats and a dog by the end of the night. (It also means we need to drive them home an hour plus each way, but it will be nice to just have our own 2 cats after 11 days of 5 pets in the house, that can’t all be out together).
I’ve previously mentioned that I drive people to medical appointments. Yesterday I drove a man with atrial fibrillation to a cardioversion appointment.
They also want to do a cardiac ablation procedure on him to cure his afib, which is safe, effective, and scary sounding.
I’ve had the procedure myself, and it worked! No more afib.
On the way to the appointment I explained my history to him and he feels much better about it, and went ahead and scheduled the procedure for October. I will definitely volunteer to drive him to and from the operation.
I’m so glad he listened to you and took your advice!
During the pandemic one of my daughter’s good friends since childhood got engaged. As a wedding present my daughter got him a kitchen aid mixer (she got a great deal on it as she was working for an ecommerce company at the time). It has turned out to be the best gift she ever gave. The recipient is moving to London and just sent her a picture of the box with the mixer that he is having shipped. She told him, if it was too expensive to ship and adjust for the UK, that she would not feel bad if he sold it. He loves the mixer so much and told her he uses it almost daily.
For me, giving somebody something they love that much is such a good thing for both giver and recipient!
