Frequently asked questions:

~WHAT IS TASP?~

WARNING Some plagiarism from Wikipedia, but is it really plagiarism if it’s taken from Wikipedia?

TASP stands for Telluride Association Summer Programs. TASP are six-week educational experiences for rising high school seniors offering intellectual challenges rarely found in secondary school or even in college. They are designed to bring together young people from around the world who share a passion for learning. The participants, or TASPers, attend an intensive seminar led by college and university faculty members and participate in many educational and social activities outside the classroom. Like the Telluride houses, each TASP receives a discretionary budget, whose use is democratically distributed via weekly house meetings

Admission to TASP is based on an application that includes six essay prompts and for some, an interview. Out of approximately 950 applicants, about 180 are given an interview with members or associates of the Telluride Association as well as TASP alumni. Admission is very competitive: in recent years, fewer than 10 percent of TASP applicants have been admitted. This year, a total of 68 students will be admitted to the four TASPs. Many students are invited to apply based on strong standardized test scores or the nomination of educators who are familiar with TASP. However, any high school junior may request an application, and acceptance largely ignores standardized test scores and graded academic performance. Like other Telluride programs, TASPs are free.

TASPS also advocate a self-contained community of learning among the TASPers at any one of the four TASP seminars. TASPers are encouraged to engage in activities together outside of seminars. Often, TASPers form intense bonds over six weeks as a result of the self-contained community that forms.

~WHEN ARE NOTIFICATIONS RELEASED?~

In an email from Ellen Baer herself, we we’re informed that we would be notified of our progression to the second stage interviews by March seventh. There are exceptions however: some applicants have already been informed before the formal release date. Generally, these exceptions have been located in the PNW region.

~WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE THAT FREQUENT THIS THREAD?~

WARNING By no means do those listed here run an oligopoly on this thread. It is open to any and all, as intended by collegeconfidential. However, these people post on an almost daily basis and have developed a small community that has many idiosyncrasies that are practically inescapable on this thread.

*D-Yu- Elmo (LMOE- Last Man on Earth- Donny has no manliness points and ergo doesn’t count) Loves guns and explosions! A very descriptive member of the forum.

*Earilmadith- Also known as Cira. Cute elfish girl that dreams muchly of the kingdoms of Princeton and Cornell, possesses gourmet cooking skills, loves web comics (she’s velociraptor in disguise), exasperated with boys (especially 8th grade ones), always has wise things to say (the sage amongst the group), classical economist, I believe…

*PanicPower- MLS (My Little Socialist- Guess her political beliefs, anyone?) Loves her mama’s cooking, singers (But not bands!) and went to TASS last year, and thus is a god among us mortals.

*St. Hudson- Donny, Don Juan (As he’s a terribly cute ladies’ man who isn’t that terribly manly at all.) Has an unnatural fondness for PB&J, loves Walden, is a romantic idealist and supreme individualist. Good taste in music.

*Wink- Fridge (Frigid, as her skin only barely covers her cold, robot interior) She’s a critical thinker, everyone! She’s a Jain (Google it, people), lives in the frigid North (affected her development?) and never appears to be around when we have our music discussions because no one can never remember what she likes.

*WolfTheFierce- Porna (Loves sexual innuendo. You’ll see, Just spend a little time with her… If you dare) Loves Jewish boys, fierceness, butch girls and actually tearing people to shreds with her four-inch claws. Also sexual innuendo and outuendo.

~RECURRING CONCEPTS~

*Winkism- Ideology pioneered by Wink. It states that there is no god but Wink and that one day, the world will become united under the benevolent rule of Dictator Wink. Once this day arrives, there will be peace on Earth and the Universe will have reached moral equilibrium.

*Webcomics- Many of the frequenters of this thread read webcomics. The favored choices are Questionable Content, XKCD, and A Softer World.

~CURRENT STATUS OF ALL APPLICANTS’ MINDS~

*This is the general feeling of the applicants about TASP: “Oh my God/Wink/I don’t have a supreme being to exclaim to/ FSM with his noodly appendages! I want to get in super, ridiculously, like really seriously badly! I want TASP madly, truly and deeply and I would probably shoot a man in Reno to get in. Seriously, TASP is the best thing that ever happens to the people who get in and then they meet unicorns and solve world hunger and colonize Mars and live happily ever after in awesome space-y jumpsuits in bright retro colors. They always know whether a cheese is edible and just aged, or if it’s actually spoiled to an inedible state. They are like meta-gods amongst us mere mortals and Panic, who is a regular god amongst us mere mortals. Their lives are filled with bliss and they are also impervious to water, cooking oil and most acrylic paints. They live charmed, interesting lives and we want to be them so tragically, scarily badly that we know in the depths of our hearts just what despicable acts we would commit to get into this summer program.”

I’ve been toying with going vegan for several months now. I really don’t consume milk except occassionally with cereal and in cheese, chocolate, etc.

Has anyone tried buffalo milk? It’s…interesting. I really can’t stand homo milk though. Milk’s unlisted ingredients include blood and pus, gotta love that too.

I don’t mind milk so much in India, because at least I can see that the cows are being treated humanely…and be certain no blood or pus enters my milk…

I had the opportunity to milk a goat on a class field trip in like first grade, and I was way too grossed out to oblige. I’ve regretted that ever since.

I’m sorry, but I’m damn proud of the work I did for this. I can’t help but show off.

Okay, so, for future reference, any and all newcomers should probably read post #6121 on page 408.

I think I might have had buffalo’s milk mozzarella…It’s good.

And what a beauteous thing we have created! I laud you, Donny.

black market = the amish
and what trip let you milk goats…

Buffalo milk is really thick and heavy, and it settles in your stomach well. I remember feeling really mellow after drinking it…(not the on-hard-drugs kind of mellow).

i think i could like buffalo milk mellow. imagine it now people, we pass around the milk then watch the clouds pass by.

Funny story about the Amish -
I saw a few Amish people in my local public library the other day. They all arrived in gray cars and were dressed conservatively and such. The only thing out of place is that half of them walked in talking on their blackberries or listening to their iPods…(they were a big youth group or something)

Panic, in retrospect, I really have no clue.

^^… and I might be rooming with you guys? wink

does anyone know when interview notices are sent out??

it happened to the puritans, except it was not with such fabulous technology
