<p>I’m a science/math/engineering grind, and I was hoping to do research at FSU or the University of Florida this summer (they each have a program), but does TASP trump these opportunities by far?</p>

<p>Practice interviews are not necessary for acceptance. Preparation is fine, and if you feel the need to run through your ideas with another before your interview that’s fine, but very few TASPers went through the rigorous practice interview process you’re suggesting, UT. Please don’t give applicants the wrong idea about what preparation is necessary to have a good interview.</p>

<p>Almost every college and university assists their major scholarship candidates (for Rhodes, Goldwater, Truman, etc.) with rigorous practice interviews. Why?–because no matter how competitive you are, it is hard to imagine how the practice could hurt. It is not much of a stretch to extend the same techniques/logic to an opportunity like TASP. Some people no doubt do fine with minimal preparation for the interviews, just as some people get in with last minute essay drafts. Arguing that practice lacks benefit is tough, if even for no other reason that it helps keep one’s nerves in check.</p>

<p>I’ll second this. I made it to the first cut last year, had a fairly horrendous interview, and was ultimately rejected. </p>

<p>Forget how awesome your essays were. Forget how brilliantly you get your ideas down on paper. The interview is a different ball game.</p>

<p>(On the other hand, the interview isn’t scary, and the interviewers aren’t mean. But you should be prepared to extend and defend your arguments, and I definitely was not. Spend some time really working through the arguments in your essays, and do some light research on current events.)</p>

<p>And even if you have a very good interview, you may still be rejected. So,never assume admission is a sure thing and I know you think this would never happen to you (rejection)–always apply to a safety summer program- ergo one you know you’ll get into. Also, don’t build your life around admissions. If you get it, nice. If you don’t – too bad-their loss. Anyone who is afraid of rejection or dealing with it-- I encourage you to check out my thread. Some people said some very kind things on it last year and it really helped me through.</p>

<p>Before I ask, I just want to let my intentions of applying to TASP was merely for the experience and that intention largely outweighs the tiny part that was for college apps. But in the case that we interviewees get rejected, does the TASP Finalist status hold any significance?</p>

<p>I got an interview date. Someone from a Harvard graduate school will fly from Boston to my city. Gosh, I’m really nervous!</p>

<p>^ Does this mean you will not be available for an interview? Your interviewer should be notifying you soon. I would let them know ASAP. It’s Saturday, so contacting Telluride now wouldn’t accomplish anything.</p>

<p>I remember my interview. I did not prepare. I basically expressed my views on things (like i usually do), asked questions to clarify the interviewer’s questions, and was honest. In fact my interviewer asked me a question and i said that i didnt know the answer. I stumbled on the different scenarios, talked the interviewer through my thoughts, asked questions to get more info about the topic, and arrived at no clear answer. Mind you, this was only one question out of many but I felt it would be the thing that would keep me from acceptance.</p>

<p>For future applicants who have happened on this page of the thread, TASP does offer to reimburse travel costs, and does provide a stipend to replace part of potential summer work earnings, particularly for low-income applicants. So, don’t let financial reasons be part of your decision not to apply.</p>
