Dear CC Friends,
We are in the market for new mattress. Life got busy and suddenly our mattress is now over 20+ years old! Since H and I are at “that” age, the minor aches and pains have started and we definitely need to get something better.

I have read the mattress related threads here and it looks like a foam mattress is the way to go. The main concern about these for me is how hot it gets. I am at the age where excess heat when I go to sleep is definitely going to be a problem! We did test some out, and for the short time I lay on the bed at the store, it did not feel too hot. On the other hand it was a cool fall day and we did not test it long enough to know if it will be an issue.

Any feedback on the heat issue is much appreciated! We are looking at the Contour Select model.

I also read somewhere that you need to be at least 140 lbs for these mattresses to be comfortable. Any truth to this rather bizarre statement? I am a rather petite person.

Second question: Are Tempur-pedics worth the price? We also liked a Serta iComfort (which has a cool gel layer on top) but these are rather new to the market so there is not much history on longevity. If anyone owns one of these, we would love to get feedback. There is a clear $1000 difference in price with the Tempur-pedic model we tried.

Both H and I loved the adjustable bases, so I think we are going to go for one of these no matter which bed we get.

Ihave no experience with the serta, but I have a temperpedic. I love it, and it did not take the two weeks toget used to it. When I started the middle aged thing, I was really hot, and thought would have to replace it, but we changed the comforter we used and I have not had the problem.

We love our Tempurpedic, too. I haven’t had any problem with it being too hot, and we don’t even have air conditioning.

The one thing to keep in mind is that it has a strong smell at first. I seem to be over-sensitive to smells, so I couldn’t sleep on it for a week or so. After that, it was fine.

I have a Tempurpedic and really like it. I’m the type who can feel every little imperfection in a mattress - i.e springs, ridges, peas. With the memory foam there are no bumps to feel and it definitely conforms better.

My mattress is a basic model - I’ve actually owned it since before some of the fancier mattresses they have nowadays.

I’m also the type who likes it to be cold when sleeping and certainly don’t want extra warmth. I haven’t noticed that the mattress is any hotter than the regular mattress I had before. Note though that I do have a/c in the room and keep the room pretty cold at night but no colder than when I had a regular mattress. I know that Tempurpedic (and others) have models that attempt to reduce the heat factor even further.

A friend purchased a Costco memory foam mattress of some type that while less expensive, just wasn’t as good. They’re not all the same just because they say they’re memory foam. This one was somewhat wimpier, wouldn’t rebound back in shape as nicely, etc. My Tempurpedic is pretty much the same as when it was new many years ago - no dents or compressions.

I can’t compare to the Serta or some of the others. One way to look at it though is this - the Tempurpedic memory foam mattress has been wildly successful - to the point where it’s being copied to some extent by virtually all other mattress companies including the mainstream ones that starts with an ‘S’ (what’s up with that anyway?). Whether their copies are as good as or better than the one they’re all trying to copy is hard to say but it does speak to the Tempurpedic being the benchmark.

Whatever you buy, assume you’ll be keeping it for 20 years or so, so if something costs a bit more, consider that it may be worth it.

We bought a new mattress a year ago and looked at both the Tempurpedic and the Serta iComfort. We ended up buying a Simmons ComforPedic which cost somewhere between the two and felt the best to my husband and me. I’m also petite and don’t weigh 140 lbs. but find the mattress to be very comfortable. I was having a lot of hip and back aches when we had our nearly 20-year-old mattress that have virtually disappeared since we got the ComforPedic. I also haven’t experienced that the mattress is any hotter than our old mattress. The nice thing about the ComforPedic is that it really didn’t have a strong smell when we got it, unlike what I’ve heard about other memory foam mattresses.

I’ve had a Tempurpedic for 8 years now and love it. Now that I’m getting to “that age,” I turn on the ceiling fan/kick off blankets when I need to. H insisted on this mattress and I didn’t want to spend the $. I’ve loved it since day 2 (day one felt a little weird). I’ve always had joint/back pains. This mattress is so comfortable, I hate to leave it-- and love to come home to it whenever I travel.

To be the contrarian, we have a Sleepy’s memory foam at our beach house & I hate it. It makes me hot (hotter than typical!) and I wake up achy. Because it’s a small house, we pushed 2 XL twins together and I’m seriously considering getting a new mattress for my side next year.

At home we have a Stearns & Foster, which I love and would buy again in a heartbeat.

We have a Tempurpedic and I would say yes, it gets very hot, which I do not like at all.

The other thing I noticed is that while it is comfortable, what ends up happening is that you sink into it and do not move during the night, so you might wake up with an achey arm or shoulder that you slept on all night.

I also agree that it has a funky smell; I do have a sensitive nose.

Having said all this, I’m not sure there are better alternatives. All of the highly-touted mattresses I have slept on at hotels were much less comfortable overall; leaving me with backaches and hip aches and neck aches, which I don’t get from the Tempurpedic. I am probably about your size, too, <140 lbs.

Son has a sleepy’s memory foam and he loves it. My wife and daughter like it too (at least when they tried it for five minutes). Son is very sensitive to heat.

Another tempurpedic fan here…and I’m a lot less than 140 pounds. My husband also weighs less than 140 pounds. We both find this mattress very comfortable. Ours is almost 10 years old and feels as good today as the day we bought it.

Thanks for all the responses…we are leaning towards the Tempurpedic after seeing all the positive experiences.

By the way, what’s up with cc today? The responses are jumping around out of order. Thumper1’s response says she posted at 10:35 pm yesterday although I only posted the original thread at 7:47 pm today!

We have a Tempurpedic and love it. D2 had scapular thoracic bursitis and the doc recommended this mattress for her. We bought one for ourselves some years later and have enjoyed it. You can get rid of the smell by getting a cover for the mattress made by Tempurpedic that encases the entire mattress. One really great thing about the mattress is that it doesn’t move when one person gets in or out of bed. I am not sure, but I think you can get a 30 day trial with this type of mattress and return it if it doesn’t work out for you. Good luck!

I had a memory foam mattress for a while and absolutely hated it. I’d wake up with my back covered in sweat every night and generally had to make a trip to the freezer to grab a cold pack to cool me off.

I switched to a Select Comfort and am pretty happy with it. Feels much cooler, and I like the fact that all I have to do to make it feel like a brand new is inflate it back to 100 then reset it while lying in bed. My only real complaint is that the air bladders for the two sides aren’t seamless and you put a piece of traditional firm foam to prevent there from being too much of a gap. I’ve had to do a bit of MacGuyvering to make it comfortable, but I no longer feel like I’m being forced to roll to one side or the other. They’re pricy, but three years in to owning this bed I still love it.

I had trouble posting yesterday because of the 60 second timer going off every time. Apparently there was a software bug. It cleared up last night.

I like the coil type mattresses too but I would guess that they don’t last as long as the foam type.

Our son’s foams trees had the smell for.a few hours. The salesman said to expect it for a day.

I sometimes think reactions are skewed by prior experience. If you come from a traditional mattress, you can easily fall in love with the motion isolation a foam mattress provides. But if you come from an individual coil mattress - think Simmons versus Serta - then you wonder what the big deal is because your existing mattress isolates motion.

One other thing to know about the Tempurpedic is that it has a different shape than other mattresses, even when covered with sheets and a comforter. This may not matter to most people, but it did to me. It has a very squared-off appearance; it almost looks like your mattress must be a big wood block, or something like that. It does not have the rounded edges that most beds do.

I have one of the denser temperpedics, and it doesn’t sleep hot. I’m still cold in bed. It does do well with the adjustable base. We also have another adjustable base bed with a Vera Wang mattress, and due to the bending, it just didn’t hold up well.
