Our first adjustable bed doesn’t have the “wall hugger” design. You can’t use it with a bed frame, or even attach a headboard. The ergo one that came with the temperpedic is much better in that regard. I believe we can use a wooden bed frame with the bed if we’d like.

We have had the temperpedic for a couple of years. It is very comfortable and I can’t feel my husband move at all. I weight about 120 lbs and I was not aware that that was an issue. I can no longer watch TV in bed because it is so comfortable I fall asleep. Also, sometimes I am in such a deep sleep I forget that my high school-er has not come home yet. Things that never happened with my previous bed. It might be a little hotter than our previous bed, but it isn’t significant. My husband previously had a lot of back issues, which are nonexistent with this bed. There was a smell the first week. I am glad it went away.

I went mattress browsing today and was told that temperpedic is coming out with a new model that sleeps cooler called the Breeze. Idk what to buy for us. I loved my old Kingsdown but the new ones are not the same and we need a new mattress. What model temperpedic are you guys happy with? Anyone know anything about the new Simmons NXG mattresses? We are both small people with back issues.

We are looking at the Serta I-Comfort. Perhaps since it has not been around as long as the Temperpedic there have not been as many comments on the I-Comfort in this discussion. Does anyone have experience with the I-Comfort? Thanks in advance for any evaluation that you can provide.

To the Tempur-pedic lovers, I purchased the topper (that comes in a duffle) a couple of years ago. I do not take it when I fly but I do take it to our summer rental and whenever we are on the road. It is not inexpensive but imho it was money well spent.

Just to throw another one into the mix, we recently got the “sleep number” bed with adjustable base and the memory foam topper. It’s miles ahead of our old mattress but not perfect.
The “number” part is just an inflatable insert under the padding. Remote control adds or removes air. Unlike a too soft spring mattress, even the softest settings distribute weight evenly. I keep thinking that this is the best version of those waterbeds everyone tried in the 70s.
The adjustable base works with our headboard. I love having my head slightly elevated when I have sinus stuff, and the slight foot elevation is great for your back…until one of you wants to roll over. The king can be ordered with a split base where you use two xlong twin bottom sheets, but then you have that gap to deal with when you want to get together. The adjustable base also includes a “massage” feature. It’s nice if you are young enough or rich enough that your earliest “sneak off to a motel” memories don’t include beds where you could drop a quarter into a box and the “magic fingers” would shake the bed for 15 minutes. But I digress…
The real problem with the massage feature is the noise. We have a hardwood floor, and the bedframe is attached to a wooden headboard. It’s really loud.

An update for all who were so helpful on this thread–just had the Tempurpedic bed delivered! Had fun playing around with the adjustable base and massage options. It feels very comfortable already but will be more so when it softens up a bit more. It is however stinking up the room, so we have the windows open upstairs although it is 45 degrees outside today. Hope the smell is gone by nightfall! otherwise, I think we will be happy with this purchase.

I hope you enjoy it. You need to report back after you’ve slept in it. Note that they tend to feel firm when you first get on it but it softens quickly (within seconds) as you lay on it. It’ll also feel somewhat firmer if the room temp is real cold but again, it’ll soften up quickly with your body heat.

I think I remember that the smell goes away fairly quickly but it’s not all at once. It s/b reduced quite a bit tonight, more tomorrow, and maybe a bit of lingering smell for a day or two after that but not much. Make sure you remove any of the plastic wrapping from the room/house as well since it might have some smell.

Regarding the smell, H never seemed to notice it much, but me with my sensitive nose noticed it for quite sometime. I’ve had the bed for a couple of months and just this past week noticed that I didn’t smell it anymore. The good news is, the smell did go away eventually.

Bumping up this thread because we are going to purchase a new mattress soon and are still stumped as to what to buy. Any new thoughts?

Glad you bumped up the thread. We have a serta pillow top mattress that I find very hot. Does anyone know about any “chiller” type toppers? I would like a new mattress but this one is only 2 yrs. old. When we bought it, I was assured that it was made of the type of foam that was not “hot”.

I heard that temperpedic came out with a new “cool” line. I think it’s called the rhapsody. We went shopping today and I so far like the most expensive ones out there (no surprise). I liked the temperpedic cloud lux, Aireloom Ingrid and the beautyrest black beyond line. Now have to research reviews.

OP here…we ended up buying the Tempurpedic Contour Signature with an adjustable base. This bed is working well for us, no aches and pains in the morning and love the foot massage feature of the motorized base! For us, this unit was a worthwhile investment!

We have had select comfort air beds for over 12 years. My husband and I have a king size one and each of our 3 sons have the twin size. The best thing I can say about them is that each side of the King size is adjustable which is great. My husband like a hard bed and I like a soft one. I don’t think the kids adjust theirs , but there are times I do adjust mine.

We still love our Select Comfort. I find it much cooler than the memory-foam style mattress I had prior.

I’ve also found the types of mattress toppers sold as “convoluted foam” to be way cooler than memory foam. They’re usually shaped like an egg-box instead of flat like most memory foam toppers. The extra space at the bottom helps with air circulation. Also, a cheaper on Amazon than in stores.

After a long time of both DH and I waking up achy, we bit the bullet a couple of months ago and bought the Tempur-pedic Rhapsody (with adjustable base.) We also “test drove” the Sleep Number, but decided against it because a) I was a little worried about the mechanics of it and b) when we tested it in the store, DH and I both ended up with the same sleep number. I think we might have been more interested if we were different.
We LOVE the Tempur-pedic. I was very concerned about it feeling too hot, but that has not been a problem. There was an odor that lasted for several days, but we opened the windows and slept in the guest room for the first two nights and then it was fine (and not as bad as I thought it would be.)
We really love the adjustable base too. It also has a massage feature, which DH loves, but I’m not crazy about (I also don’t like the massage feature in the chairs at the nail salon, so that’s just me I guess).
They are definitely pricey - it cost more than my first car. But really worth it not to wake up and feel like a 90 year old.

Bumping this up.
Our bed is 18 yrs old. A few years ago we added a memory foam topper. I have been having a lot of hip pain that went away when I slept in a hotel bed. I am also menopausal and get hot at night.
Shopping for a mattress seems overwhelming.
Dreading the process.
Anyone bought a bed recently?

How to Find the Best Mattress in the Maze of Choices
<a href=“How to Find the Best Mattress in the Maze of Choices - The New York Times”>http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/09/garden/how-to-find-the-best-mattress-in-the-maze-of-choices.html

YES! I have osteoarthritis in my back and had been going to an acupuncturist. DH and I felt like old people getting out of our bed that was 15 years old. We decided last November to try one of the Memory Foams. After a lot of research we ended up with the Serta Icomfort Cool-gel memory foam. There were 3 kinds: one was the most popular medium give, the other was a little firmer and one was a hybrid coals in the middle and memory foan at the top. We couldn’t decide between the medium and more firm and decided to go with the medium. We are both 5’8"…I weigh 140 lbs and he weighs 160. If we had weighed more I’d gone with the firmer.

We purchased ours at Kittle’s and we had a 120 day return policy. Of course, you have to buy another bed if you return it but we would have done so anyway. What do we have to lose? OMG…it has been absolutely wonderful. I don’t even have to go to the acupunturist for my back anymore and DH couldn’t believe how his aches and pains diminished. We turn it 90 degrees every 3 months (small impressions do form after about that time). They say to rotate 180, but I rotate 90. the mattress is a little “off” inches when you do that, but it makes more sense for impressions I think.

They say beds last 7 years now…I honestly don’t know if this will last 7 years or not. We’ve had it for almost 1 year and it’s still in great condition. I told DH that even if it really lasts 3 - 4 years, that will be the best $2500 we’ve ever spent…that would be $600 - $800 a year for magnificent sleep! I’ll pay that.

Ours is a king size mattress and it does not get hot. That was one of the things I was concerned about with memory foam. The older kind gets hot, but the new cool gel doesn’t.

Thanks con mamma-every morning I wake up and tell myself I need a new bed!
I’m glad to hear that you don’t get overheated. I have some time today and I need to brave the mattress stores.
