Terrible times continue: attack at synagogue in Pittsburgh

As of 10:25 a.m. Central time, police say the shooter is in custody and three police officers were among those shot.

Another sad day in America. I fear the culture of hate and intolerance that appears to be ever growing. We now live in a world where anything goes…Two weeks ago, I was accosted on the street, and verbally assaulted for standing aside to allow somebody to pass me by. I was so shaken by that attack, which I am certain had some racial undertones, that it took me days to recover and I now live in fear of passing those people on my route, ever again.
I recently read that 25% of Millenialls polled, expressed experiencing bouts of PTSD relating to the 2016 elections.

Somehow, that doesn’t surprise me.

This also happened recently. Two Black customers were shot in Kroger. A customer had a gun In the lot and the shooter said don’t worry I don’t shoot Whites , or something to that effect.

I don’t even know how to say this.

My D very good friend from high school, her family relocated to Pittsburgh. I think she is still in rabbinical school but this has to be her home synagogue.

Prayers for everyone. I hope her family wasn’t in services today.

We are doomed as a nation.

@deb922 Squirrel Hill has many Jewish residents and synagogues, so this may or may not be her home synagogue. This is terrible, very sad. I grew up in Pittsburgh, very near Squirrel Hill, and still return a couple of times a year. Have been to Squirrel Hill many, many times and just had dinner there and then went to a brewpub there earlier this month. Very disturbing.

Oh boy.

I live within blocks of this synagogue. As sevmom wrote, there are at least 8 synagogues that I can think of within a mile of this corner. Three separate congregations use this building.

As a Pittsburgher, my heart is broken for this synagogue, our city and for our very, very fallen world.

Thanks for that info @sevmom. They do live in squirrel hill. I did not know that there were many temples there. They are reform and I tried to google it but didn’t see what the affected synagogue was.

I texted my D and asked her to check her friends Facebook but I haven’t heard anything yet.

Still prayers for all.

@partyof5 - and that man who shot the 2 AA people outside of Kroger, but didn’t shoot the white security guard, had just tried to get into a black church!

When is enough enough?

@greenwitch Yep, and it’s so sad that we have so many terrorist activities happening that it really didn’t receive any coverage. I’m very saddened by all of this.

** The rhetoric has to be toned down, and everyone needs to call out the folks/family who spew this crap**

Our in-laws of Jewish faith, congregants of Tree of Life Synagogue, are okay. Carnegie Mellon, Chatham Universities are on alert too.

@partyof5 “The rhetoric has to be toned down, and everyone needs to call out the folks/family who spew this crap”
I am convinced I have anxiety directly caused by the growing culture of hate and ‘nationalism’ There are days I cannot even open a newspaper or turn on the TV. Leadership starts at the top…

My sister lives just a few blocks away and was driving past just as it was happening. Feeling so sad and worried. They are not jewish, but her kids go to many jewish programs and events in the community.

I read a report that per capita there are more hate crimes against Jews than any other minority

@momo2x2018 I have anxiety too.

I’m saddened that the POTUS just basically blamed the synagogue for not having armed guards.

There is a discussion to be had about having guards, but we also need to talk about gun control, racist rhetoric, and mental health.

@fritobandito “I read a report that per capita there are more hate crimes against Jews than any other minority”

My S is presently overseas in a country with growing anti-Semitism; before he left, I told him to be very careful about admitting his Jewish heritage; how sad is that? I know I am not alone in thi advice, I have several friends who admit to telling their kids the same thing

@partyof5 - shortly after the 2016 election, I clearly recall jokingly telling several friends that soon our water supply would have to be ‘doctored’ with Prozac; now I’m not so sure I was joking! I might not be so far fetched of an idea!
Here’s a (((hug))) for you, and everybody else ‘suffering’

@momo2x2018 – I’ve posted this before, but sometimes my only sanity are the words from Mr. Rogers (a true Pittsburgher), “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

I know that sounds somewhat naive and child-like, but at times when I am so utterly bereft with the ways of this world (and I mean ALL hate-crimes), I literally mind-speak over and over “look for the kindnesses.”

@pilot2012

Thanks for posting that Mr. Rogers quote. That was helpful for me this morning.
