@Dexter74 congrats! That is indeed Gateway!
We have a friend who was successful in going from Gateway General Studies to Mays, so it can be done. Student will enter in the fall as General Studies major, then take the appropriate classes to apply for change of major to their desired major choice. A 3.9-4.0 will be needed, and A’s in the Mays pre-reqs, but it can be done. A TAP advisor is who they’ll be working with, during Gateway & General Studies.
Thank you @52AG82. Looking up May’s pre-requisites now…
FWIW, both of my students applied TO.
I’d like to know more about the “remediation” part. My son has high scores so he’s not remedial. He applied just before the deadline which according to CC was months after the business school was filled. I wonder if that’s correlated?
I see the advantage to coming in the summer for a few credits and easing into college life. The extra cost is unfortunate.
I am so confused with this Gateway vs. Teams. Gateway seems to be for very high achieving students that just missed auto-admit. And according to your post a student needs 3.9-4.0 to be admitted to their major?? It does not seem like it is for kids who need extra support.
BLINN is a community college, I realize it is a pathway to admission to A&M but it is still a community college. This program must be for the true student that needs extra help and/or time. What are the stats of the kids that go the TEAMS way??
I received the TEAM offer yesterday and I have a 4.6, 12 APs(all 3s or above), 11.5% of my class and a 3.95 UW gpa. I know many high achieving students who received the TEAM offer yesterday and i’m not sure it means that they need “extra help” necessarily.
Hi! congratulations! The remediation was just extrapolated on my part - from the verbiage on the website "Gateway students are given a unique chance to gain full admission by taking summer courses and proving how well they can do academically.
My son is in 4 IB classes and has a 4.2, so I’m think he’s prepared for college, but I understand the holistic nature of the review. Perhaps it’s because he was May’s as well, and submitted on Dec. 15? Either way we still considered A&M a reach at this point so this is a fantastic option.
When do you have to accept the offer? He’s been deferred at a few and we are on the hook until Mid-March potentially.
Congratulations!!!
Did you receive an email with the offer, or just an email stating to set up your net id, then noticed the portal change? TIA!
I just checked my portal and it was there! No email
TYSM. Same here.
I read that portion of Gateway the same as you did. And I need to do more research on how it impacts becoming part of the Business School. Also, I don’t think we have an “offer” yet to accept? Just the portal change. I am expecting an email with explanations of an offer like we’ve received from other schools. Elsewhere on this thread they’ve said that offers should come a few days after the portal change -?
I believe he means such a high GPA to get into Mays Business School, which is insanely difficult. Other majors require a lower GPA (Bio for example is a 2.5 with at least a B in certain core courses.
IMO there’s NOT ANY remedial at A&M. Getting into anything if you’re not in-state Top 10% is difficult. Look at the stats of people who didn’t even get the “3 options” message yesterday.
I occasionally see posts on other Aggie Boards (like TexAgs) complaining that with 70K kids that A&M has become a diploma mill. After watching my very highly qualified (but not Top 10%) kid go through this process…I’d say it’s much harder than when I attended a generation ago.
Can you explain more about how a student gets into Mays via Gateway? Assuming student comes out of Gateway with As, then starts Freshman year as -? general studies? Is that like Undecided in the Business School, or just Undecided in the entire school? If the latter, is there a minimum GPA that has to be maintained for a semester, year etc to then be in Mays? (like for Penn State - 2 years of a 3.5)
@PepperMilo @Dexter74 Gateway students all enter as General Studies. In order to apply to change majors-to their chosen/desired major-all current students at A&M must spend at least a semester in Gen Studies, before trying to change majors (A&M doesn’t call it ‘transfer’, it is ‘change of major’).
I know, it sounds confusing. Gateway students are a step ahead, because they enter as Gen Studies.
For example- a student who starts out Engineering (or any major) who wants to apply to Mays (or any major)- must switch to General Studies, then take pre-reqs and apply for change of major.
Gateway students start out a semester ahead.
Every major requires different pre-req classes, hours and gpa. A quick google search will show the requirements for all majors.
Those wanting to change majors to Mays require 3.9-4.0, all A’s in Mays pre-req classes. Mays is small, only accepts 100 change of major a year. Other majors have their own requirements.
The TAP advisor helps Gateway and General Studies majors. Blinn TEAM has their own NSC and asvisors.
It can be confusing!
Oh my, a 3.9 to get into Mays? Wow. Kinda a Dealbreaker.
Perfect explanation. TY! You can see pre-reqs on this link @PepperMilo
Yes, it says a 3.5, but tbh, needs to shoot for 3.9-4.0. They can do it!! They need to work closely with TAP asvisor.
We have 2 friends who changed majors successfully this past year into Mays, both started out General Studies.
My son didn’t set the 3 options in AIS yesterday. At this point does that mean he will most likely get PSA? Is full admit, team or gateway still possible? I read through last year’s messages and it seemed like the 3 options came out at the same time for everyone and not in waves. There also wasn’t much movement in Feb except for the student that got the options or got PSA. Here are his stats.
In state
Applied 8/3
In a tiny private HS with no rank
3.9 UW GPA.
18 hours DC
Works a part time job all year
Good EC and volunteer hours
President of NHS
Great essay about dyslexia difficulties and how he has learned to work hard and use coping skills to advance and is now going to be the valedictorian in his class
LOR from 2 A&M professors that know him from a summer camp he attends at A&M
1200 SAT
He submitted the SAT score but wrote about his difficulties with standardized tests in his essay
1st choice major is Mays (we know it’s full) AgBus is second choice
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. He is a super sweet kid and has always wanted to go to A&M. He will be thankful for any pathway that he gets including PSA. His older brother is in Aggieland now (sophomore) so he would much prefer a pathway that is in CS.
He is 1st quarter in AIS
Risk analysis of OOS student, with an addition $15k req’d for summer program, for a chance of getting into the business school after a year = $65k risk with no assurances; versus direct admit to other schools. Sigh.
Thank you all for the insight!!!
Is gateway a lower path?
I ask because it seems it is to “prove one’s self” but then you are full admit in big freshman classes if you make it. Plus everyone knows Summer cores are tough, and FAST! The Blinn team path is half smaller cc classes and based on lots of past students comments, it’s great. But you have to jump through the hoops 2 semesters. So both have “requirements”.
I am wondering if DC #s has some weight on the offers.
What classes will they have to take in the summer? Heard some are math. Does it depend on goal major/department?
Worried that Blinn team would be better for me since I’m not a genius, and full admit might be harder.
Did hear Blinn team will have lots of 8 week courses so is that a draw back and the managing both campuses and such too?
I am grateful… just worried, really thought team was a good fit for me and got Gateway.
Just heard several 1st Q kids I know got Team, and they have similar stats to me???
All Ag majors
