Texas A&M Class of 2028 Official Thread

Speaking up for Galveston a bit here. After doing research on this thread, and our son not being in the wave of acceptances in mid-January, we had the tough talk with him (he’s all in on A&M) that he needs an appropriate back-up plan to match the dream.

We did research and he applied to Galveston late last week…just before we got the options. Feeling okay about TEAM since we got the options, but glad we applied to Galveston and did so for all the reasons listed in this reply…change of major transfer, still an Aggie Ring / Diploma if he fell/falls in love with it, etc.

This has now been answered by others and I concur. Way easier to change major… No application fee, no waiting, no competing (depending on desired major)… easy peasy.

Did you receive an acceptance from Galveston? Just wondering the time line for application to admission.

Haven’t yet. They also use Howdy/AIS and we’re “In Review.” I think his HS finally got the transcript over last Tuesday, so we’re about 1 week in that status.

I wasn’t clear in previous post - we applied 1 week before the options, so 2 Fridays ago. Then a few days for the HS to do their thing. Sorry for any confusion.

I’ve shared this before, but I’ll add it again during the discussion about Galveston. I have a family member who was a marine bio major at TAMUG and then decided to get a 2nd major in Bio Med and was able to go spend a semester (or 2, can’t remember. I know they had an apartment) in CStat and get those classes. It was very easy, as long as you have the internal pre-reqs.

I agree with others about the differences in offer.

But,if you are not offered TEAB offered by TAMU-you don’t apply and are interested in BLINN-Brenham Engineering Academy(you have to apply ), we toured it and really liked it. They have an open house (in March I think )and zoom meetings year round . The apartment/dorms that the students live in are wonderful most have their own bedroom/common living area. There are about 150 students are placed in classes together as a cohort . They have lots of study groups as you would imagine, but when we toured their lab room, the big screen was down because they had all watched a movie together the night before we visited. So it’s not all studying. Beautiful campus and 1 hour from College Station. My son liked it better than Galveston(which was also nice) which surprised us. Seemed like a really nice option.

I highly recommend your daughter look into the Oceans and One Health program at Galveston. My daughter applied to BIMS in August and OOH at Galveston on January 10. She was full admitted to Galveston last week for OOH and given Blinn Team options this Saturday for BIMS. First year BIMS and OOH are VERY similar. She could pretty much do the first year in Galveston (with a better acceptance rate) then change major to BIMS sophomore year and not be behind. We’re mulling over our options, ourselves.

Where can I find this info on Gateway after admission 3.75?
That’s an issue.

@Famfam123 what is the students desired major? I think that is most likely what the 3.75 refers to; every major requires different pre-recs and gpa.

what is student life like on Galveston?

Congratulations! I guess I’m wondering if a major can get too full to accept transfers. Which one would get preference for a slot — TEAM or Galveston?

Ok, this is definitely a new development about the 4 additional classes and 3.75. That gives me pause. Thanks for sharing! I hope more information is put into their portal soon, it seems like alot to ask to accept the NSC out of state, travel, and not be given all the information initially on the Gateway program with their initial offer.

Gateway ASCC 289 and UGST 001 are 0 credit hour classes, those basically are teaching your students how to manage time, use free university study resources, and get free tutoring help.

Only two core curriculum classes are counted towards GPA. Core curriculum classes in TAMU are mostly electives (those are easy classes regular students use to prop up GPA). Check any TAMU degree plan and you should find about 18-24 hours of electives (core curriculum).

After the summer, students follow the same change of major process through TAP.
https://tap.tamu.edu/change-of-major/index.html

So in short, gateway is a 4-class second summer session, after that, students start first year following change of major process (which can be more than 4 classes). Students should always aim for 4.0 to succeed in college.

@Dexter74 you can always contact the Gateway program directly and ask them-

Don’t beat yourself up about covid - it was hard on a lot of people - intentionally. There are SO MANY paths to success. In fact the only thing that will really mess you up is how you think about yourself. There is no bigger detriment to success than lack of faith in your own abilities.

As for colleges, there’s almost always a better chance of acceptance when you transfer in because you are competing against a smaller pool. If you go to a school that is an easier fit for you now and get strong grades you will both be a better candidate as a transfer and you’ll be an educated consumer. I transferred in college – and what I wanted sophomore year was radically different from what I thought I wanted when I was in high school. HTHs and Good Luck!

The 3.75 must be major specific, you only have to have a 2.0 to get out of the summer, why would it be 3.75 all of the sudden.
I say this cause I looked at the this link.
The do a major change from General studies once they meet major requirements.
I think……

A major can get too full to accept transfers, but if you are at Galveston you are not dealing with any kind of transfer. It is just a change of major, which is much easier than transferring in from an outside school. I’m not sure how TEAM works, but I think there are requirements you have to meet in order to change your major or to complete the program and be full time at CSTAT. Still it would seem that either of these have priority over someone transferring in from another school.

I’m not sure where you are getting the 3.75…

It’s way up in the thread. An OOS person was talking about spending that much money and having a 3.75 requirement hanging over their head to change major into business
